16. Champagne celebrations
“Congratulations Ma’am your first deal”.
Said Mehra both with a smile and excitement.
He handed over a document which was confirmation that the old printing press that her father used to work for was now Bajaj property.
Prerna in someways couldn’t believe she’d successfully accomplished this.
When you ended up in a place like Prerna was, somewhere unfamiliar as this all she could do was feel a relief and a contentment. “Thank you Mr Mehra, I couldn’t have done it without you.”Mehra smiled again and excused himself now that there was something accomplished there was room for breathing space.
Prerna watched Mehra leave and then looked at the document.
Property deeds under the Name of Rishabh Bajaj Group of Companies and addressed to Co CEO Prerna Bajaj.
A moment or two to ponder and Prerna hears her phone ring.
Mr Bajaj she reads on the phone display. Accepting the call to her his voice.
“Congratulations Mrs Bajaj Mehra tells me you’ve acquired deal one.”
“Thank you..” she says with a smile not having expected her husband to be so informed but she should have known. Word travels at the speed of light.
Back home Rishab sits comfortably in his chair.
“Ive arranged for a dinner party tomorrow evening to celebrate, I’ll let you choose the guests and the details.”
Rishab didn’t expect her to respond straight away and was about to close the call but she had an answer and certain one at that.
“Aap, Kuki, Mr & Mrs Mehra aur Ma.” She said confidently.
“As you wish” replied Rishabh and they went on to talk about what Prerna wanted for the event.
...
Late that night in Bajaj bedroom as Rishab smoked in his chair at the window side whilst Prerna was asleep he heard her stir in bed in be. He heard her mummer look restless. When the mummer became words, restlessness he put out his cigar and left his chair to sit by her bedside. Little trinkets of sweat had appeared against her forehead.
Rishab took Prernas hand and stirred his finger tips over ..the face of her hand. Softly to comfort her. “Shush it’s okay, he whispered.” Until Prerna let out a clear and loud call for Anurag.
Once and then twice, taking it In his stride Rishab looked away for a moment but continued to keep Prernas hand in his.
Suddenly waking up in a panick.. Prerna shot up looking worried and then slowly relaxed having seen Rishab by her side.
He poured her a glass of water..and she took it from him. For some reason she was able to remember that her dream was about Anurag and it had led her to call for him.
“i’m sorry..” she said realising that she’d invaded their privacy by having bought Anurag into the room.
“Aap theekh hai?” (‘Are you okay?’), he said with concerned eyes.
Prerna nodded a yes.
Come to bed..- she asked him. Knowing she’d unintentionally hit a sore spot.
...
The dinner party Mr Bajaj had arranged was just perfect. Everybit what prerna wanted. Something small and homely.
Rishab decided to dress in Prenas favourite shade of blue with a white collar and Prerna wore a black to compliment.
Whilst Rishabh introduced Veena to Mr and Mrs Mehra Prerna made sure the table was laid out well and it was. There was only the odd thing she wanted her way.
George had used the finest cutlery. Prerna moves one or two little features around. The only thing left was to serve drinks, as George was on Kukis beck and call it meant there was no one to open up the bottle of champagne. Prerna looked towards Mr Bajaj who was stood at a distance with her mother and couldn’t help be caught in a daze. He looked incredibly handsome. The way he’d invited her mother and dealt with her in such a gentlemanly manner stole her heart. As if he’d heard her thinking he happened to glance her way. When that kind of eye lock happened it was always meaningful and a little surprising too.
After a few mins prerna approached, “ Mr Bajaj, can I have a minute” Prerna said politely. Once they’d stepped aside she asked for his help.
“Can you help me with champagne please.”
...
Whilst Rishab prepared to pop the cork on the bottle he noticed the way his wife was stealing glances at him as she added wine glasses to each place at the table. He smirked a little as he went about his way. Prerna had a way of stealing glances and when their eyes would meet she’d shy away uncomfortably.
“You can look me in the eyes Prerna, I wouldn’t mind.” He opened the bottle and began to pour into a glass one for each guest.
“I think you want to compliment me but you’re having trouble…” Prerna smiled ignoring him a little and getting back to her table layout.
Mr Bajaj took his eyes off his task for a second to look upon his beautiful wife.
“Call me Rishabh” he asked casually.
“Ji?” But Prerna looked up with suprise.
“Call me Rishabh that is my name if you hadn’t noticed. Rishabh Bajaj” He was teasing her towards the end it seemed.
“janti hoon magar Nahin keh sakti” (I know but I can’t call you that) she felt uncomfortable and it showed in her sheer awkwardness.
“And I thought I was the old fashioned one..” said Rishab now looking right at her from the other side of the table.” He remarked playing a game of words.
“Older, You’re a lot older ..people would think I have no manners.” She reasoned with him on age and relationship, tradition and respect. His eyes however remained adamant and playful, loving and unceremonious.
“i’ll give you until the end of the evening to oblige ..do it your way or we can do it mine.” He said walking away with his glass leaving Prerna in a predicament and teenage sort of blush.
