7. Love bites
Prerna was washing her hands and her forearm under cold water.
Where Mr bajaj had left a mark was now causing a burning sensation. The cool water under the tap helped.
By the time Veena entered the kitchen Prerna had dried up.
“Priyu ..”
Said Veena as she walked towards her.
“Tu theek hai na beta”, khush hai ? “You’re alright aren’t you love” you’re happy?
Prerna smiled with her eyes not just her lips and Veena in response couldn’t help but do the same.
The smiles were wrapped in a hug now,
“Prerna!” Called out Rishab a few minutes in making her jump a little.
Veena smiled at how newly wed the couple seemed especially when Prerna rushed to respond like a wife would.
“Ji ayi!”(Yes, in my way)
She shouted back before rushing off to leave the kitchen.
When perna walked back into living space see saw Kuki sat eating her breakfast and Mr Bajaj stood fixing the cuffs of his sleeves
“I’ve got to get to this meeting be back in a couple of hours”, he said looking up from his sleeves now and then at her, “Eat something” in particular looking at her when asking this of her.
“She nodded a yes”. As he went about reaching for his blazer hung on the back of a dining table chair in front of him Prerna stopped him.
“Mr Bajaj...may I ”...she said, he looked up at her asking him whether she could help him into his blazer. Everytime he looked at her today he saw a different Prerna one who had stepped into the role of his wife, he didn’t mind as he saw her basking in this feeling.
She stepped closer as he handed her his blazer and then walked behind him holding out the arms of his blazer to allow him slip it on.
Kuki gave a wide smile and cheeky clap it seemed to be her way of her showing she approved.
Both looked towards kuki with surprise and later a smile.
“Shush eat your breakfast” said prerna whilst Bajaj smiled on.
“See you both later” he said wishing them goodbye.
...
How are Mrs Bajaj and Kuki asked Mehra, sat beside Rishab in the back seat of one of Mr Bajajs company cars. “They’re very well thank you” said Rishab as Mehra was about to give him a quick update as they drove to the meeting.
It was warm even in the air conditioned car at this time of the year, as soon as they they arrived he made his way to the washroom.
Walking to a sink, washing his hands with cold water and then splashing a little on his face.
The truth was he was a little uncomfortable at the collar.
Unfastening the top button of his shirt he loosens his collar and puts a finger around the fold of the collar around his neck to give himself some room.
His wife had left a little memorabilia from their night together.
Mrs Bajaj he sighed to himself as he saw the love bite on his neck line.
..
Later that afternoon as Rishab returns home he sees Kuki rested in prernas lap at the couch. He keeps quite as not to disturb.
Taking off his blazer puts it to aside
“Abhi abhi soyi hai (she’s just fallen asleep) she whispers to him.
Rishab walks around and sits beside them both. He lovingly runs his hand over Kukis cheek.
There was a comfortable silence amongst the three of them.
Rishab looked up at prerna and remembered he owed her a conversation.
She watched him sit and admire his daughter the way father’s did.
“Kukis mom Arohi lived next door” .. prerna paid more attention when she realised he was sharing something close to his heart.
“I worked at the local garage her father owned, that’s how we met. She continued her education I continued to work to support my mother.” Prerna noticed the way Mr Bajaj went from looking into oblivion to looking back at Kuki.
“When we married her father passed away and I grew the business little by little. Fixing two cars a day then fixing four.
When we were pregnant with Kuki I knew I had to do more to earn more.
The day I got my first deal was the day we had Kuki but also the day I lost her mother.” Prerna could feel the sadness in his words.
“From then on I focused on making money, making money so I could help Kuki gain her speech, making money so I’d be the most powerful person in any room I’d step foot in.”
“And ma?” She asked him.. and he looked towards her “I lost her too not long after.”
“I’m sorry” said prerna softly, her eyes concerned at how bleak Mr Bajajs past seemed.
“Love bites Mrs Bajaj”, That’s the unfortunate thing about it.
Prerna nodded but Rishabhs words also reminded her of love bites in a different sense. The sort he’d left her and her uncomfortable posture worrying if he’d noticed had been observed. It was as if she was hiding something from him.
“George take kuki up to her room and bring me some ice.” Instructed Mr Bajaj to the butler.
George did exactly as was asked of him he took kuki carefully to her room meanwhile Mr Bajaj poured himself a drink and walked over to his armchair to light his cigar.
Prerna watched him.
Soon George had returned with a bucket of ice. Instead of putting ice into his drink she watched him take a handkerchief out of his trouser pocket and place ice cubes into a wrap.
He walked over to her and asking to see her forearm. Prerna held out her arm to be nursed by him.
