🏏ICC Women's T20I WC 2024: Bangladesh vs South Africa: Group B - Match 16 - at Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Dubai on 12/10/2024 @ 7:30 PM IST🏏

Match 16: Bangladesh vs South Africa | Squads | Players to Watch | Fantasy Playing XI | Live Streaming | Pitch Report

Heading into their final group fixture of the Women's T20 World Cup, South Africa and Bangladesh are on different ends of the spectrum. However, both teams are aware that anything other than a win, could potentially see them tumble out of the competition.

South Africa put up a strong show against West Indies and Scotland, winning handsomely in both games to hold a very good NRR as they inch closer to a semi-final berth. Although their only blip was against England, they play their last game before the English take the field for their remaining two games. This leaves England with the knowledge of the equation at all times with the advantage heavily on their side.

The openers have been getting solid starts while Marizanne Kapp, Chloe Tryon and Sune Luus who follow are powering the runs for South Africa. With the bowlers having been on the money so far in their two victories, the pieces are aligning for South Africa. Anneke Bosch's promotion to Number 3 might be the only issue the think-tank might raise ahead of the game, having scored only 18 and 11 in two games at less than a run-a-ball.

Bangladesh on the other hand, had a brilliant victory against Scotland on the opening day. But things have only gone downhill from there with back-to-back defeats against England and West Indies. They have struggled with the bat, not having scored 120 in any of their three games so far while only two batters have scored more than 50 runs cumulatively. With their NRR heavily on the wrong side of zero, they seem to be virtually eliminated already but a performance of a lifetime could potentially give them a glimmer of hope of progressing into the last four.

What they said:

"We need to build players to take pressure off Joty. So, there are a few players coming through. I'm sure in years to come they will develop themselves and do justice to their careers. - Bangladesh head coach Hashan Tillakaratne on Nigar Sultana Joty carrying the side

Tournament form guide: Bangladesh are coming into this game on the back of two losses - against England and West Indies - and are fourth on the table with just one win. South Africa, meanwhile, bounced back with a big win against Scotland after their seven-wicket loss to England.

News brief: There are no injury concerns for South Africa. For Bangladesh though, captain Nigar Sultana seemed to be limping during West Indies' run chase in Sharjah. She seemed to have hurt her knee and received the physio's attention but continued to keep wickets. While Bangladesh are all but out of the tournament, South Africa's NRR-boosting win has kept them well in contention for the semi-final.

Bangladesh won the first-ever T20I they played against South Africa back in 2012 but went on to lose the next 10 matches against them. They broke the streak in December 2023, but the last T20I these two teams played ended with South Africa winning by eight wickets.

Player to watch: Captain Laura Wolvaardt's strong starts have been one of the biggest positives for South Africa. She is currently the top run-scorer of the tournament, with 141 runs in three matches. With South Africa searching for a big win against Scotland to improve their NRR, she scored 47 off 27 in the chase, hitting five fours and a six. She was excellent in the powerplay in the loss against England as well.
