Amole Gupte's Next "India Item"
By Webmaster, 18 January, 2008

Amole Guptes NextCreative director-writer of Taare Zameen Par, Amole Gupte is finalising his next script. Discloses Gupte, "My next movie is called 'India Item'. But it has nothing to do with any item-song or item-girls in today's common filmy parlance."

But it is yet another foray into the kids' zone, "Yes, it's again a film seen through the vision of children. Over the past two decades, I have maintained this big thick scrap-book where I have been religiously sketching caricatures, pictures, etc. The film will focus on the unfair discrimination between the rich and poor but will also have its entertaining and fun moments," discloses the unassuming Gupte

Amole modestly shrugs off accolades and critical acclaim for TZP, "It is very heartwarming to know that the film's script has worked.

But honestly, there is nothing new that I have done. Its basically the same old emotions and problems faced by parents and teachers in handling a special child."

"Taare is essentially a slice of life, based on my personal observations, childhood flashbacks, and my intensive interactions with hundreds of kids. Even during the auditions I never made the kids aware that they were being tested. This was because I feel its wrong for children to get the feeling of rejection, especially when one amongst them becomes the star-kid," says the director.

Interestingly he was the one who spotted Darsheel Safary the progidy who eventually played Ishaan in Taare...

"As we were finishing the auditions of some 6,000 kids at the Shiamak Davar Summer Funk group, I noticed this boy (Darsheel) sitting alone and aloof in a corner drumming away on a table, lost in his own world. The moment I saw him, I called out to him as Chhote Ustaad. And I knew I had found my Ishaan," recalls Gupte.

Ironically, Gupte's next film will not repeat Aamir Khan in the cast. "Its not that I don't wish to work with Aamir. We still share a cordial rapport. But I will approach stars based on the suitability of the character. I do not suffer from any guilt-pangs if I have a star name in my cast. It will only help the film to reach out to the masses."

"My subjects always support an underlying social cause and convey a soul-stirring message," justifies the bearded long-haired artist turned writer-filmmaker.
