I watched this movie online because I never grew up with it and had never even heard of it before. Didn't realize this was some cult film until I saw all the interest in its re-release plus Dia Mirza saying this is her most beloved character.

I liked the movie but I don't see why it became some cult film that's so beloved now. The Madhav character came across as very toxic and problematic, especially when he tells Dia Mirza's character that she should be grateful that he didn't take advantage of her while lying to her because she would have let him do whatever he wanted. Saif's character seemed so superior in every way that I was rooting for him to win. I thought this was a cult film because it was ahead of its time by pairing Dia with Saif instead, but that wasn't the case.

Finally ! Never fell for Maddy even when it released and I was in my fantasy teens. Never found him entertaining. I rooted for Saif’s character throughout as well starting from college rifts.

But I guess that was the point of the movie. Chemistry is beyond our control, and we love who we love. Brain and heart can sometimes be out of sync. It was toxic for me and I guess if there’s ever a sequel about their lives 25 yrs after, we’d see the couple undergoing many turmoils. In the end, it’d be JUST love that’d bind them together. Not sure if there’s any other factor in their relationship, certainly not respect or trust. smiley29

I was in college when RHTDM released. Dia Mirza became a crush of lots of guys after this movie. I was also one of those guys.

Maddy was entertaining but it was hard to root for him, especially after the opening sequence where we see how badly he treats Saif's character. Saif is innocent but gets suspended from school for two months because Maddy frames him. And Saif seems like a stand-up guy with Dia Mirza and just in general, that it's hard to imagine any girl turning him down especially when the alternative is Maddy.

The fact that Maddy basically tells her she should be thankful he didn't rape her felt so regressive like this was still 1990 when Dil came out and that infamous Aamir/Madhuri rape scene. Once I heard that line, I was convinced there's no possible way this movie can possibly end with them getting together, but clearly I was wrong.

But yes, that's true that we don't really control who we are attracted to or fall in love with so that part is realistic, for better or for worse. There's been rumors about a sequel and Dia said they will only make one if they feel it lives up to the original.

Frankly, the only thing I like about film is its music. I didn't like the story, I would run for my life if I come across Maddy's character in real life. He was too toxic for my taste. Also, the romance was cringe. Dia looked beautiful though and Maddy looked handsome.

I prefer Saathiya over RHTDM.

This movie is now being promoted as a cult movie but frankly speaking it was not. I remember when it was released only A.R.Rahman garnered praises for his music. The movie was a huge flop then and I remember Madhavan was criticized for his weight by lot of Bollywood critics then. Also, the love story and Maddy's characterization were criticized a lot.

This movie is known only for music and nothing else.
