It's Box office Math, hardly people get it no matter how many articles go around. With each film, you have the same question.
Unlike early days, Film tickets are not the only way to cover budget and make profit for films, especially for big budget films. It's a combination of sources and this is 21 st century.

Padmavati budget is 215 cr. It has Indian Distributor . rights, Overseas Distributor rights, Satellite rights and Music rights and some brand package deals behind it to cover the full budget and made profit. It's the case with all big budget movies.

Verdict depends only on Indian distributor share. They are the distributors, so that initial cost they spent on distributing is also 0. Looks like they sold the movie in India for sub distributors for around 100 cr. So if it's Indian business is NET 236 cr, that means approximately share is around 118 cr, which indicates a HIT. Because Indian distributors spent only 100 cr, buying the film though it's budget is 215 cr. It has nothing to do with the budget. The bottom chain in the business covered their price and making profits, so it's a HIT/Super HIT.

I thought a movie was declare hit only based on Indian BO collection and the amount it needed to recover was budget was Budget+ Print and Advertising

Now it's changed to recovering cost of production

Kaabil was sold for 60Cr and it made 90somethijt Crore I'm not quoting producer figures,

I fail to understand how it made 30cr and still ppl cal it flop or underperformed

I give hrithik films as example cause he's one of the very few I follow closely

And no I'm not a PV hater, I'm a huge SLB fan saw PV fdfs :D

I don't like ranveer but that doesn't stop me from saying he did justice to bajirao role in BM

Just a disclaimer :p

Forum BO expert srkat had explained this a few times on his BO prediction threads
Producer sells movie to distributors at a certain price, if distributors just recover that price, its average or semi hit, if they make a profit then its a superhit, if they make huge profits then its BB or ATBB
Thats called ROI or return of investment
Hit, superhit tags are given by Indian trade sites ONLY on basis of distribution price in INDIA, Not WORDWIDE
and AFAIK that doesnt count selling of satellite rights, music rights, etc

Now these Padmaavat producers Viacom distributed the movie themselves
so did they price it at 100 crores when cost of making the movie was 200 crores?
That is the question

According to Koimoi, Padmaavat is now in the Plus category

This is their BO categorizations:

http://www.koimoi.com/box-office/hits-flops/verdict-2018/

Here's our Box Office Parameter:

Hit: Film which doubles the investment

Super-Hit: Film which more than doubles the investment by additional 50%

Average: Film which only recovers investment

Plus: Film which recovers investment & yields some profit

Flop: Film which loses 50% or more of investment

Losing: Film which does not recover the investment but loses less than 50% of it.

If the movie is sold at lower price, that means it is a Hit just for namesake, but has actually brought loss to the industry.

So they distributed the movie at half price (of the budget) to show that its a superhit? 😆
Eros did the same with BM too, budget was 145 crores but they distributed at lower price and got a Hit tag from BOI for earning 184 crores
But Koimoi gave BM a Plus tag too, not Hit tag
