Neerja- Knowing how Bollywood dishes out melodramatic and over exaggerated films based on real life personalities, I was always skeptical about the movie right from it's trailer, mainly because it was based on someone who is no more. I didn't think that the movie will do justice to such a braveheeart and rely on dramatic tactics to pull in audiences. Also the fact that Sonam stars in and as Neerja made me shudder because I don't really enjoy watching Sonam onscreen. But the film and she has completely surprised me and has proved me wrong.
This is how every biopic should be made in Bollywood.Kudos to the team for keeping the whole film real and factual and not letting their imagination run wild with random dance sequences and romantic numbers just to make the film 'entertaining'.Such a heartfelt effort by the whole team behind the film. The best part about the film was that nowhere do you see a forced effort of driving home a point or literally telling the audience 'Look this is Neerja. She is brave'. Everything happens seamlessly with natural progression. I won't say the film is perfect, it has it's flaws but inspite of that, i's pretty surprising to see such a biopic coming from Bollywood after watching glamorised ones like Bhaag Milkha Bhaag and Mary Kom.
Sonam is pretty unimpressive in the first fifteen to twenty minutes of the film. She just plays herself and not a character and by the time she was about to board the flight, I already gave up hope and then BAM! Comes the domestic abuse flashback and from there,Sonam finally starts to act! And then there's no one to stop her,she just keeps on progressing throughout the film. Such a restrained performance coming from someone who has had zero screen presence in most of her films. I loved how the character has been written and portrayed in such a way that she shows her courage and bravery through her mind and not through her actions. That's one of the biggest plus points of the film. Sonam is incredible in the flashbacks, especially the one where she reads out her husband's letter to her parents. That's some impressive voice modulation!
Shabana Azmi and Yogendra Tiku gives ample support to the main character of the film. I feel the reviews are being quite unfair to Tiku who inspite of having very few scenes, have brought out the perfect emotions that a dad would have while seeing his daughter suffer or in danger. He has this aura of such a positive and encouraging person.(Remember Jessica Lal's father in NOKJ and Rani's father in Queen?) And then there's Shabana.'Brilliance' would be an understatement while describing her performance in the film.Such a small role yet performed so honestly with so much conviction. She literally makes you choke with her monologue at the end.A few minutes of screen presence here and there but everytime brings tears in your eyes.Easily one of the BEST actresses Indian cinema has at the moment. The guys playing terrorists too did a fine job, especially Jim Sarbh as Khalil. No wonder he is such a well known theatre actor.
There are many things that I loved about the film but if I start writing in detail, it would become an essay so will list some out.
1) Those bindis stuck in the mirror when Neerja is dressing up
2)All the guys except Jaydeep having moustaches. So late 80's!
3)The cross cutting between Neerja's past and the action in the aircraft. It added a lot to Neerja's character and the film.
4)The preparation of the terrorists and Neerja shown parallely before boarding the flight.
5)Unprofessional terrorists panicking and fighting amongst themselves and opening fire thinking light has been dimmed by the military.
6) Neerja reading the letter and eating the chocolate
7)The scene where she locks herself in the bathroom
8) Neerja's last message to her mom
9)Kids telling 'mamma ke pass jaana hai' and Neerja telling 'much hi'
9)The whole idea of 'fear gave her courage' and 'performing your duty no matter what happens'
10) And my absolute favourite- The phone conversation... 'Bahadur bachcha kaun?'..'Main'. Sonam and Yogendra Tiku killed it! β€οΈ
Among the things that I did not like were definitely the songs. Why ruin such a beautiful song like Gehra Ishq by showing it in a ridiculously done slow motion inside the car? The handheld camera movements bothered me a LOT throughout the film. Also I felt the cross cutting at the end with her speech and performing last rites was unnecessary. I really wanted to have my whole attention on Neerja's mom.Flashes of Ganga and the ashes was disturbing.
Well this is all I can think at the moment.I'm sure I'm missing out on many things that I loved but overall this is one of those well made biopics which really inspires you by telling you the true story and not by being gimmicky. A beautiful and honest effort at honouring a braveheart lost in the mists of time.
4.5/5
Another thing-I remember during Bajirao Mastani and it's controversy many people were saying in the forum that biopics are not documentaries- they don't need so much factual accuracy, they need songs and dance numbers to entertain the public, etc but sorry guys. If the intention of the director behind making a biopic is honest and not earning crores, a biopic CAN be entertaining and informative at the same time without it being a documentary. If you don't believe it, go and watch Neerja!
Ignore the typos.I realised my review is too long to go back and check the spelling mistakes. :P
