Whao!! Nice film.. Ranveer was looking so good & Priyanka was stunning too
Anushka doesn't have much to do

Story wise it was cool but ending part was confusing & dull... Kabir met Farah again or not ?? It was not even shown... ๐Ÿ˜•

Songs were boring except title theme...

Music was so bad, songs weren't really needed. Cinematography was amazing. Lots of hamming in the acting department, albeit with some moments of brilliance from everyone. Absolutely loved the portion of the movie (2nd half) with Salman, Nawaz & the kiddo on the run. Speaking of whom, the lil one was uber cute...and so was Rasika's little brother! They should've edited the movie much more crisply, maybe shorter by at least 30 mins. Overall though, felt like this was sort of Salman's PK/TZP due to the similar themes. Not without faults, but feel good and worth a watch! 3/5.

WHAT?
Are you sure you wrote the right thing? Film had some fine songs like Zindagi Kuch Toh Bata and Tu Chahiye

Bajirao Mastani (minor spoilers)

To put it in one sentence, BM is a combination of mythological shows & Kekta serials. The result is majorly cringeworthy. 150cr of cringe.

In an age where people all over the world are watching The Hobbit & Game Of Thrones level quality in battle/war/fight sequences...SLB made this trash. The fight scenes were so, so, so ridiculous and just clownish that I have to crown them as the worst part of the movie...even worse than the "story" that SLB shamelessly put forth. So unrealistic and not only amateur with the sequences themselves and the CGI, but even over the top acting...signalling some serious mythological show inspiration and execution. HOW can you claim to do a historical "epic" movie which is about kingdoms & warriors and you can't get the very basic thing decent? How!

The next worst thing: the point of this entire story...SLB actually tried to make the movie about how love has no religion or barriers...and the amount of harm and destruction he showed (involving family, children, an entire community) while still proceeding to GLORIFY and poeticize the thoughtless actions of two extremely selfish and one-dimensional characters...just plain unbelievable. Of course, people are allowed their creative freedom so he can do it...but giving this kind of message that respects no morals, no principles, no rights of others to people at large, whether that's adults, the youth, or children...is not responsible. You do not tell people that it is okay to ruin everything - not only for yourself but for numerous others - in the name of love and that this is something noble or aspirational. Irfan Khan's narration at the end of the movie almost infuriated me because of the way it painted the entire situation and the "message" it was trying to send in light of all the garbage SLB showed for more than 2 hours.

Acting & Characters:

SLB should be grateful to Ranveer that he was able to hold this whole film together by acting well in a character that exponentially loses your sympathy as time goes on. Bajirao starts out as a decent, very slightly appealing guy, but suddenly turns into a massive jerk who is selfish and cowardly. His character started picking fights, being antagonistic and just plain inconsiderate about anyone other than his instant-noodle love. Ranveer played it all with a lot of life and passion. I wouldn't give him a 100%, because there were some parts that felt slightly too melodramatic (drunk scene or two) and he still needs to improve on his expression of "vulnerability" which comes across puppy-like. Other than that, he was great. Unfortunately not a "Best Actor" role even though he acted as best as possible with the material provided.

Priyanka - 100%. Her scenes are a breath of fresh air, from the way she looks to the way she acts...all on point. Hated that SLB made her character "agree" and "side" with the love story, increasingly so near the end. This and Bajiao's mom were the two reasons why the movie was KEKTA all over. Sacrificial lamb and scheming MIL. Why go watch 2+ hours of this when we've been watching it for the past 15 years on TV!

The dark horse of the movie for me was Milind Sonam. He was solid throughout of course, but ONE scene and just one scene (where he looks Bajirao in the eyes and tells him that he cannot just give up on their army and its sacrifices as and when he pleases)...and boy did he steal it. So impactful. That is probably one of the Top 3 scenes in the movie. The rest of the best scenes were the ones between Bajirao and Kashi, both in terms of writing & performance. You could actually see why they made for a good match...they laughed & joked together, shared a lot of mutual respect & concern, and were even very sexually attracted to each other.

Deepika was sorely miscast. Forget that there is nothing regal about her looks or body language...but she was speaking like she's in some contemporary and urban town, not the daughter of royalty, raised in court and taught all the arts. She should have taken a cue from Ranveer who was sublime in the way he moulded his voice and delivery to the demands of the role and "time period" they were playing, while she stood in contrast to him and everyone else, speaking in her normal voice. Why didn't anyone tell her this was not okay? There was nothehraav or strength in her delivery and she mostly used this breathy, whispery voice to go along with the ghosty/obsessed look. Apart from that, she had deer-in-the-headlights expressions in bits that required her to talk up to someone (resulting in her getting SORELY outplayed by Kashi in one scene & Bajirao's brother in another scene where they basically insult the crap out of her in the most choice words)...but the worst of Deepika's parts in the movie were two: (1) the dance sequences - especially the first one where she dances in front of Bajirao & her parents - no difference between her and a tree and (2) this random, almost out of character "smile" she'd suddenly break into, ex. when Bajirao marries her/proceeds to hug her & then during her labour scene.

Coming to the character of Mastani - I would wish this on no one, not even Sonakshi, although she would have danced much better. This woman was essentially a selfish & obsessed stalker/fangirl hybrid, who was hellbent on getting accepted by the object of her affection...so much so that she ruined his life, that of those around him and even herself and her child's (and she was very proud of this!?!?!!?? " numerous hollow dialogues about ishq yeh toh isqh woh - in fact, that's all her dialogues in the movie.)

A lot of the supporting cast (special exception for the dude who played Bajirao's brother) was so bad...the visuals aren't gonna salvage robots and amateurs on screen, SLB!!!! Shoutout to the most artificial and cringeworthy actors such as Mastani's mother or Kashi's friend who appears in the beginning.

The love story is best summarized as "stalker convinces man that he is in love with her: proceeds to act like a virus and destroy everything around him." SLB wants us to believe this is very poetic.

Rating: 1.5/5 where 0.5 is for each of Ranveer, Priyanka, and Milind Sonam. Only people worth watching this messy and drag of a movie for. Unless you're a hardcore fan of anyone in the cast, might as well see it on TV because of how long it is and how much it reminds one of TV shows.

Though its your personal opinion but kinda seems as if you watched the movie with perspective of a 21st century person rather than being 17th century Maratha. Time was different, Relationships were treated differently... Polygamy was a common practice and wife of warriors were used to his man's extra martial affair or say him being married more than once. Kashibai accepting the 'lovestory' was a practical thing, infact SLB toned down the 'doormat' nature of Kashi and made her a dignified character in the end.
Nothing 'KEKTA' in nature of both Radha Bai and Kashi Bai's character considering time period they belonged to

So I finally caught Bajirao Mastani in Theater last weekend and it's every penny worth spent.

Positives:
Absolutely stunning screen play. SLB's minute details of sets and direction.. Brilliant. Really enjoyed the visual treat. Fine performances. And absolute spot on Marathi dialogues by Ranveer n PC. Especially PC. Every time she came on screen & spoke 'chala' I actually heard people cheer for her.
PC nailed Kashi bai. There can be no one who can look and act Kashi. PC = Kashi.
DP looked Gorgeous. Her fight sequences - goose bumpy. The posture, look - She nailed them.
And no more words to describe the brilliance that Ranveer was as Bajirao. Absolute perfection. PC and Ranveer - Deserves every award. Every accolades.

Negatives:
Characters - Mastani and Bajirao could not convince me or my friends about their love story. The constant 'Ishq' rant of Mastani actually had people sigh in boredom as if.. fir se shuru iska. Fault lies in SLB. He couldn't convince the angst of Bajirao-Mastani love story. Neither there was a connect.

Acting wise DP's 'ishq' dialogues fell flat. Poor dialogue delivery by her. She looked like Parrot mouthing mugged dialogues. Her dance moves was very stiff. May be its her height or what but she dances with her chest & tummy stretched out. Makes her look very weird. Watch Pinga and Mohe Rang do laal and you would know what I am talking about.

Story:
Major disappointment: A great warrior reduced to a love sick puppy.

Bajirao was attracted to Mastani. And his actions said the same when he went into her personal space. So, I don't really blame Mastani or think of her as Home-wrecker. But her obsession knew no bound. In order to make Bajirao his, she actually was acting all crazy. Specially the part where she asks Bajirao from Sahu Maharaj. (Theater reaction was like W*F.) Mastani's Ishq was very selfish.

Then starts Bajirao's obsession with her. He kept insulting his brother in front of all. He forgot his duties as Peshwa. All he thought was about Mastani.
Yes his mother and Chimaji were wrong to not give Mastani's message to Him. Yes, they were wrong to send her to live with courtesans. His Mother was extremely wrong where she was ok for Mastani to be mistress but not Rau's wife. But his mother was right where she said.. being in Mastani's love you are forgetting your duties. That's where she was not wrong. He was a warrior first. He was given post and responsibilities of Peshwa becoz of his abilities. He was ignoring them just to be with Mastani. Many places I felt he was acting so arrogant.

Kept doing injustice to Kashi too. And still was expecting that Kashi forgive him. I actually liked when he cried after Kashi banned him from entering her room.
Where Rau was right was when he asks his mother, she is ok with Mastani being the mistress but not ok for her being bahu. He was right where he wanted to give Mastani respect.

Kashi was the best character in the entire film. The most well written. And that PC's Peshwain Bai act was very convincing. Kashi was PC. PC was Kashi. Not only you feel bad for Kashi, but you feel proud of her too. Her love was not selfish. And she was much more stronger than Mastani any day.

All said and done, Mastani and her son still did not deserve the treatment they got. Attacks, captured and jailed. The scene where she talks to Shamsher Bahadur while being chained - Heart Breaking.

Movie was inspired by Book Rau and I felt book is majorly flowed. Being on IF, I know Mastani was married to Bajirao by her father. The whole dagger aspect represented Mastani as stalker. That is why some people were frowning upon historical facts being butchered for some creative liberty. Had SLB taken those points into account, Bajirao - Mastani story would have been a lot more convincing.

Brilliantly acted and most impressive scenes & dialogues of the movies:
1. Kashi sees Rau-Mastani hugging on curtain and burns it.
2. Kashi goes to Meet Mastani and her dialogue - chala bai. You can make a joke of my life and yet I can't even laugh at you. - Absolute perfection. PC nailed that one n how. ๐Ÿ‘
3. Mastani protecting her son and fighting. Brilliant. DP was so good in fight sequences.
4. Rao's entry and his exam over Shastra and Shaastra Vidya. Baba nailed it. sity wala performance.
5. When Rau resigns as Peshwa.
6. When Panth (Milind Soman) convinces him to get back in field of war.
7. When Kashi bans Rau from entering her room. The whole Radha- Krishna-Rukmani resemblance. ๐Ÿ‘

All in all a good experience with mixed feeling concerning story.

@nimbu good reviews.
The flwas is editing! Dp veer said they can make Bm part two wid the edited stuff๐Ÿ˜‰
Thanks to that many Rau Mastani scenes n two songs are gone. Had dey been der it'd be something different.

But I think he Rau was forced by his maasaheb to choose between Mastani n Peshwa title n der LOVE was such that he quit being Peshwa! Every historical source says der LOVE was extreme, maddening, passionate

But the dialogue " Bajirao ne Mastani ko Dil zaroor diya hai lekin Saasein hamesh watan ke naam Ki hai" again proved that he was a warrior first n last!

@bold - And that was not conveyed properly. Husband and other male friends felt.. He was reduced to being a love sick puppy. Major flaw in the book I would say. 3 guys were seated in front row and no one seemed to like that the great warrior was being projected as such.

And SLB shouldn't have made Rau and Mastani getting married thru the dagger symbol. Very amateurish that Mastani goes to pursue her marriage where it's a marriage only according to her & Bundelkhand's rituals.

I for one do not judge Rau - Mastani with today's goggles. Multiple wives were norm back in the day. I am just looking at it as History but history wasn't presented correctly. Political alliances were pioneer back in the time. Rau - Mastani fell for each other after they were married. They did not betray Kashi. With that story, for me, all 3 gets sympathy coz their emotions got played in hands of situations.
But with SLB's story, only Kashi walks away with sympathy and conviction. SLB's Rau becomes cheater and Mastani obsessed stalker.

You and I know this and hence regards Rau as the great warrior. None of my friends & majority audience that I came across know the facts about Rau-Mastani and so they are seeing Rau as some cheater getting crazy for another woman. Warrior is all lost. That's what my complain is.

Agree. If dey were properly married and then fell in love I'd also have been happier.

But I think slb wanted to show the struggles more than the process of falling in love .

Love happens in a heartbeat, maybe dats what dey wanted to show

Drishyam:

Well made, taut thriller. It's rare to find movies these days that engage your interest for most of the 2 and a half hours. This one really hits it's stride once Tabu enters the scene and the cat and mouse game b/w her and Vijay's family is going on. Some great acting and compelling drama there.

There wasn't really a woah or didn't see that coming moment overall but it was still a compelling watch. I personally feel they could have explored Vijay's shades as a character better cuz there was some interesting material to work with especially vis a vis his fascination with films playing into the larger set of events.

Still, a good watch.

Bombay Velvet:

Definitely not the disaster that it was touted to be. It started off well enough. Here I must pause and say that Raveena Tandon is the single most magnificent thing in the movie, along with the music (woefully underused). So I found it to be quite an engaging beginning, lots of atmosphere in the film that was intriguing to me to watch but yes, it ended up sprawling out of scope further down the line in trying to do too much in the time it had.

This was yet another film this year where the love story was not well fleshed out. And Rosie could have been made a more intriguing character...the moment she promptly falls in love with Johnny, she becomes a simpering shell of a woman in many ways. Also felt like the script couldn't make up it's mind about what they wanted to show Rosie as...the ambitious girl who fought against her circumstances to rise to fame or a fragile, needy thing.

Johnny was better fleshed out than Rosie in his street smart yet naive thug ways and Ranbir did a good job but again, overall the love story didn't have that much of a deep connect.

KJo was weak in the role of Khambaata...it became almost weirdly Pettigrew-like to watch him...lol...by the end I was left underwhelmed.

I can still admire the ambition of the script...I learned so much about the history of Bombay that I had no idea about otherwise...but somewhere the history lesson didn't fully add up to a fully compelling story and it dwindled into some predictable drag by the end.

Still, it was an intriguing watch...I wasn't exactly bored so worth the while.
