watched Bajirao Mastani

A very well made effort by Bhansali , will go down as one of the best period movies of Indian Cinema. Script & Screenplay are just about okay but it'll be made up by a very good direction , amazing visuals , good music & brilliant performances from the majority of cast.

The first thirty minutes of Bajirao becoming the new Peshwa , Deepika's entry , the battle of Bundelkhand were EPIC. It goes a little downhill after that till the intermission point ( which was fab ) where it regains momentum which goes through the entire second half barring the climax.

coming to the cast , This film was all about Ranveer Singh . One can see his hardwork in the Role of Bajirao Bhallad , he aced the Peshwa warrior look , marathi accent , dialouge delivery ( which was used to be OTT in his prev. films ) and expressions. He outdid his previous personal best Lootera by a long margin.
Deepika looked beautiful & acted okayish but her character was half baked , didnt really felt bad for her when she was treated as an outcast by the Baji's family and her chemistry with Veer was weak here in comparison to Ram Leela.
Priyanka was brilliant as a bubbly wife of Bajirao in the start to interval then a betrayed & heartbroken woman after that , even better than her for me was Tanvi Azmi in a grey shade role of Baji's mother . Milind Soman & the guy who played Bajirao's brother were good.
Things that i didnt liked were
The last 10 mins , although Ranveer acted well but the scene was too melodromatic for my liking.
Few scenes which did nothing to prolong the plot could've been edited out to show more of Baji-Kashi story. Also Malhari wasnt needed in the film & it would've been better if they had put full version of Aayat in its place.

Overall i'll give a 4/5 rating ( .5 extra for Ranveer )

My review - Dilwale
The film comes in a package, lots of good and believable action sequences, romance, comedy, separation, betrayal and drama. It would not be wrong to say that the film is breezy, and its so easy to connect with the characters and move with the flow of the film, unless you expect a master piece and some artistic cinema, it sells your boat.

The story is nothing extraordinary and even somewhat stupid, people are falling in love, betraying each other, crying and hugging without any solid reason, moreover for most part of the story, everything is so rushed, every character except Veer's ( Varun ) remain underdeveloped, one and to scenes here and there and we are expected to know about their entire life .

But even this stupid story has some very sweet and crispy sequences, that leads to the liking for the characters, be it Raj/Kaali , Meera or even Veer, at a point you do understand that these people are very good at heart and deserve their happy ending.

Pluses-

Kajol- she looks younger than me even though i am 19 years younger than her , he elegance took newer heights . She had so many shades and best was the sassy and grey shades in her nature. Loved how her character edges over being unapologetic to melodramatic and then again slides back to that ingrained bad ass nature .
She owned the frame , whichever moments she was given, she kept them so subtle and powerful. she is not like DDLJ' simran, not even KKHH Anjali, and thanks to Rohit that she is a different character and not a mashup of old SRK-Kajol characters.

The best scene from kajol was Meera's character revelation, her leading 12 men in black with that gun in her hand and aviators on her eyes, those glossy red lips and that walk, everything was so perfect. My heart screamed, screamed louder that yes Kajol is doing this to SRK and yes she can do this to him so that i can see her yearning for him in future .

SRK- BEARD BEARD BEARD .. SRK KEEP THAT BEARD ..
To be honest the more annoying, fake and cringe worthy SRK's body and fighting sequences looked in HNY, the degree of his swagger , his attitude, his charm and effortless action timing in this film was the same. It was more like SRK redeeming his HNY embarrassing acts in Dilwale .

Acting fro his part was brilliant, there is a reason why SRK is still considered king of romance, and his eyes do the entire job, and mostly his intensity in some scenes were frigging good . He rocked each and every scene with the beard.

i watched it with very low expectations, i expected another ham fest from SRK, but he surprises, and he does melt the heart in some emotional scenes. His best scene was when he pins Kajol down the wall, and asks her to shoot him right at his heart.

Ramlal-Pogo sequence. Varun and Vasooli bhai were so cute, it was hilarious that kajol was named pogo , and knowing how sassy meeraa is in the film, her being pogo and kaali being Ramlal made me 🤣

Varun- This boy is cute, and Veer indeed is the most dumb but yet sweetest character in the film. But at a point he becomes annoying, may be because he was in every frame, yes Varun actually has the most screen time, and has scenes with every character i guess. a lil bit of less varun would keep up the cuteness intact .

Varun and SRK had a good chemistry , and they were believable as brothers .

songs were good , most of them had good locations too. Janam Janam is the best song.

Minuses -

Dialogues- LAME.. I do not mind buying cheesy lines, infact i even liked Hamari adhuri kahani which also was a cheesefest but still, its embarrassing to see the actors mouthing some stupid, extremely stupid lines.

Veer- Ishu , ye toh bara issue bangaya .. W*F ?🤢

Kaali- daddy apne mujhe sadak se uthaya tha, main nahi bhul sakta. again W*F ? make it more effortless ..ufff

Meera- kaisi lagi meri acting ?😵

there are many more, but i cannot pen down all of them.

million characters -

From dhobi to chef to drivers and hotel waiters, everybody is there randomly joking and having a character and eating up screen time. Why ? Firstly why the character of king was needed at all ? just t show that Raj can take Kaali roop and beat boys ? there were many other ways to show this but this one was just so annoying, especially King having so many scenes.

Rushed scenes and under development of characters-

Rohit had an actress like kajol, and she has such few scenes and her character has no depth, no development. Infact she appears onscreen only when it is needed to show Veer or Kaali. Why rRohit ? some 10 dd minutes to Meera and her life would only make audience happy and not pissed off.

Copy pasting from Mission Impossibe 2 -

I would not mention this as most bollywood films do copy scenes from hollywood films. But because i am a huge , huge and infact a sucker of Mission impossible films, so i do know that the car chase and cliff hanger scene of meera and Kaali was not only copied , but indeed fully cut and pasted from Mission Impossible 2 where Ethan and Nyah has the same sequence . No Rohit you dont do that, especially with SRK-Kajol, they never appeared in a copied scene or film, but this film broke that mould also. 🤢

Lastly.. The film is not as bad as people here are making it out to be, indeed it is entertaining at parts, yes it does disappoint you when you think that you wanted SRK-Kajol more onscreen sequences but this film still has a heart, at the end it brings a smile on the face .

3/5 - 1 for SRK-Kajol.

NH10: In aftermath, I feel like the impact the movie leaves is almost stronger than the movie itself, which is saying something. The way you can tangibly feel Anushka carrying the film was incredible. I think Vidya in Kahaani is the only other female actress who so tangibly drove a movie in any comparable way. Anushka portrayed such control in "aggression" & frustration & fear, and to portray emotions that are so naturally "expressive" in such a subtle manner, especially for someone who gets criticized for being over-expressive, is a milestone. The script & screenplay weren't perfect, but the "moments" and approach make this movie everything it is. There is so much said through just silence in the entire thing, one such key scene being the climax...which was just sublime. No zinging one-liners needed, no wordy monologues, no over the top stunts...just real, visceral and true to the content it showed. An extremely important film for Indian cinema, IMO. More people should see it. 3.5/5.

TWMR: First Bollywood movie I thoroughly just ENJOYED all the way through, so wholesomely in a long, long time. In fact, I felt like this was the definition of what it means to be "Bollywood" and do it bang on: fantastic incorporation of music, hilarious screenplay, incredible cast & performances, and the dialogues were an absolute RIOT. This movie has so much repeat value (felt like watching it again right after it ended, how many movies make you feel like that!??!?) Pappi Ji is a hall of fame character. 4.5/5.

Carol- good performances by Blanchet and Mara but the storyline didn't fully exploit the potential. So not worth all the hype 3.5

Tomorrowland:

I thought the two young girls in the movie were superb! And I appreciated the intention of the movie re: Imagination and dreamers...credit to them for imagining a world beyond the usual sci-fi thrillers...yes the usual elements were there but I thought the overall message vis a vis having the intent to make a change for the better and not being passive as the world collapses around us was a really good one.

It's not a typical entertainer but it had heart...worth a watch.

Star wars 7 : Pretty decent movie .
Nothing great about this one , a very ordinary film which heavily depend on nostalgia.
JJ abrams did a hack job remaking "wrath of khan" ,now he remade a new hope.
Ray is lead character but hardly have anything interesting to do in this film.
It's a simple popcorn film

Bajirao Mastani review:
The film starts of well with BajiRao's coronation and then growth as a warrior. Then by the time Mastani starts dancing in her father's court it turns W*Fish. Again picks up a little post interval to go totally downhill from the Pinga song.

The good-
Ranveer: This film along with DDD really display his growth as an actor. He was pitch perfect. He manages to cover his flaws I saw in films like Lootera and Gunday ie his delivery and hamming in dramatic scenes. He doesnt strike a wrong note. Fortunately SLB doesnt depend on Ranveer's body to attract the female(or male) audiences here which is a relief to someone like me who doesnt enjoy those 6 pack display by any actor. Basically all the flaws of Ram Leela is covered in this film.

Tanvi Azmi: She was perfect as Radha Maa. Unlike Supriya Pathak who went fully OTT she is controlled. She brings out her character's intentions and concerns really well.

Priyanka: She did well as Kashi...Baji's hapless wife. Her expressions were bang on. Her huge lips were a distraction though.

Others: I liked a few more supporting actors like Mahesh Manjrekar, Milind Soman and the actor who played Cheema.

Sets and granduer: Like any SLB you can see the effort that has gone into the sets and costumes.

The bad-
Deepika: I think this film was one of her weakest characterizations since her career hit a high with Cocktail. Its not that her acted badly..her character was etched badly and she couldnt do much about it. She also looked washed out for some reason...her eyes always seem sad and tearful even when there is no reason to be sad.

The extras: Man! Every scene had like a thousand extra wearing the same clothes. Initially it was dazzling but later it got a bit too much.

The perfectness of it all: It was as if SLB was even scared to let anything mar the beauty of his frame. Like Mastani doesnt look pregnant even when in labor. Or when Mastani and Kashi but kumkum its so light you can hardly see it. As if SLB didnt want the kumkum spoiling their lovely faces.

The story and screenplay: Like I said before the film starts of well and first half hour or so impresses you. The first W*F moment happens when Mastani starts dancing in her father's court like a courtesan. Then again when her father gives her permission to go Bajirao's house as a gift. Then again when she comes to Bajirao's court to dance. How come Baji doesnt know the princess was around? And if Radha was preventing her how did Mastani still make it? I forgot to mention the scene when Baji goes to Mastani's bedroom in BundelKhand and viceversa. Everything is so khullam khulla that its not believable for those times.
The story meanders here and Baji and Mastani meet again in Pune with some unbelievable stuff for it to happen to a princess. Like Mastani living with prostitutes in the city. Where do they all disappear later? Then again Mastani being put up in some ruins in Satara. If Baji knew she was there why did he let it happen? Also Kashi not really knowing Baji is married again? Then again Mastani giving birth alone without help.
The story picks up a little after this for a while...till the Pinga song. First Kashi is upset with Mastani. In the Pinga song they are bonding and then again she is back to square one..she even banishes Baji after that. The worst bit is though yet to arrive...first the pre climax scene where Baji alone defeats an army and then the climax scene where its obvious he will die but death refuses to come onscreen. For the first time I felt like walking out of the cinema at that point. I thought the film would never end. When he dies its a relief ki picture khatam hua.

I think the biggest flaw in the film is you dont feel for Mastani at all. Its not really Bajirao and Mastani story. Its a Bajirao story only. You dont connect to their love story instead you see Mastani as an interloper. You connect more with Radha Maa or Cheema who are trying to preserve their family/culture and standing in society. You even feel for Kashi the hapless wife who gets abandoned for no fault of hers but tries to still do her duties as Mrs.Peshwa. For the protagonist Deepika has very less screentime. Maybe a little more than Priyanka and Tanvi Azmi due to her songs. You just get the feeling that a talented woman like Mastani who was a princess to boot simply wasted her talent trying to find acceptance in a orthodox setup when she could have been more useful to society elsewhere.

The film was Ranveer's through and through. Infact he owns BajiRao so much so the film should have been called Bajirao and shown his journey as a warriror which pales in the end due to Bajirao going crazy in love. Bajirao the man and the warrior intrigued me. We hardly know about him in history when compared to Shivaji and this film could have been a good way to address this lack of knowledge instead of trivializing this warrior's greatness.

I rate it a 3/5 ...2 points less for the screenplay.

Completely agree with the bold part. This is what I felt while walking out of the theater. It left me yearning for more. Wanted to see more of Bajirao and his journey. The love story didn't really click with me, especially the climax.
