Sympathy for his wife is mentioned. I don't really feel sorry for his wife. His kids, sure. But his wife, it's not as if she didn't know what he's accused of and what was looming before she married him.

I have two points on this issue.
On one hand, he committed a crime which resulted in the deaths of 100s of people. He may not have directly engaged in it, but he definitely helped by being an ally to the people who did. That is wrong and should DEFINITELY be punished.

On the flipside, the point of law and order and punishment is to reform and individual so they repent for what they have done.
Punishing someone 20 years later, after which they might have completely reformed on their own, just seems like a glaring loophole and is silly. People change so much that its almost like you're punishing a different person. The Sanjay Dutt that committed a crime might be long dead. The Sanjay Dutt you're punishing NOW, is a reformed law abiding citizen, so I dunno.

The timing of this entire thing is what I have an issue with.

Its like, if you read child psychology, the point of punishing a child is to let him/her know what act was wrong. So you punish right then and there on the spot. My aunt normally lightly smacks her daughter's hand the min she does something wrong, so the kid knows that ok, THIS is when got smacked. Its far fetched and all, but just looking through the same perspective here.
