Ranbir Kapoor’s Ramayana: Grandson of Ramanand Sagar voices concerns over cultural sensitivities

The timeless epic of Ramayana holds a special place in our hearts, and one of its most iconic adaptations remains Ramanand Sagar’s television series from 1987. Featuring Arun Govil and Dipika Chikhlia in the lead roles, the show set a benchmark for future versions. Recently, Sagar’s grandson, Amrit Sagar, discussed the phenomenon of Ramayana and the highly anticipated adaptation being directed by Nitesh Tiwari, starring Ranbir Kapoor.

In an interview with the Indian Express, Amrit Sagar was asked about Nitesh Tiwari’s upcoming Ramayana project featuring Ranbir Kapoor and Sai Pallavi. Sagar expressed his belief that the Ramayana should be accessible to everyone, stating, “Nobody has a copyright on Ramayan.”

However, Amrit emphasized that his primary concern is the authenticity of the adaptation.

He criticized the practice of presenting the Ramayana from various personal perspectives, insisting, “Ramayan is not that. It is the story of Ram, that is why it is titled Ramayan.” He highlighted that for centuries, traditional Ramleelas have faithfully followed the story.

Recalling his childhood, Amrit shared that at 13 years old, he spent time on his grandfather’s set, witnessing the creation of a cultural phenomenon. Without naming any specific adaptations that fell short, he stressed that those who attempt to retell the Ramayana must "follow the story to the tee.”

Amrit views Ramayana as more than just a story; it is an integral part of many people’s lives. He pointed out that a significant portion of the Indian population reads this sacred scripture daily and knows it by heart. He compared altering the Ramayana to changing the Bible, stating, “It’s sacrilege. You don’t do that kind of stuff. Follow the text according to how it’s been written and then try and do your honest work in that given space. You can’t hurt the sentiments of so many people, that’s wrong,” Amrit concluded.
