Rajkummar Rao recalls dealing through mother’s demise

Bollywood actor Rajkummar Rao is currently basking in the glory of his back-to-back successful films. However, he recently opened up about a deeply personal experience, sharing the heartbreaking news of his mother’s passing, which he learned from Patralekhaa. He admitted that he struggled to cope after her death and revealed that he went back to the sets of his 2017 film Newton right after performing his mother’s last rites. He recalled feeling overwhelmed with emotion, constantly crying while working on set.

In a heartfelt conversation with Samdish Bhatia on the podcast Mauj Masti, Rajkummar Rao reminisced about a significant moment on set. He was filming a scene where he had to sit in a booth before stepping outside. After finishing the shot, as he walked toward the gate, he saw someone running toward him. Although his mother had been ill, she was only 54, and he never imagined anything serious could happen.

Rajkummar described how he was confused by the urgency of the person racing through the jungle. When the individual reached him, he conveyed that Patralekhaa wanted to talk to him. In that moment, a chilling thought struck him—that his father might have passed away, as he could see the distress on the man's face, indicating something was terribly wrong.

The Stree 2 actor went on to explain that it was Patralekhaa who called to share the devastating news, and in that instant, it felt like his world was crumbling. Given that Newton was a low-budget film, he was concerned that his absence could disrupt the production. He quickly informed the production team, promising he would return within a day. Although the filmmakers encouraged him to take more time to grieve, he decided to perform his mother’s last rites and then returned to the set to continue filming.

He mentioned, “I went back to the set and I thought that I would manage; I am strong, but I could not. Phatt jati hai yaar. Mein ro raha hota tha continuous, fir mera jo ek best friend hai, Anish, the sound designer, he was also on the set luckily, usne mujhe bohot sambal liya.”

Rajkummar Rao also shared his one regret—his inability to spend more time with his parents. He reflected on how different and better life might have been if his mother were still around. He expressed sorrow for not being able to bring her to Mumbai, as she had always dreamed of meeting Amitabh Bachchan, whom she admired deeply. Nevertheless, he feels her presence with him, which provides some solace amid his memories.

On the work front, Rajkummar Rao is enjoying the success of his latest family-comedy film, Vicky Vidya Ka Woh Wala Video, where he stars alongside Triptii Dimri.
