The big South release of the week is Dhanush’s Raayan, which is also directed by the Tamil award-winning actor. Raayan is being loved by the masses for its drama, action and emotional elements. It is a story of brotherhood and vendetta with a lot of twists. On its opening day, it made Rs 25 crores at the GBOC. It is a good number given that it has an A-certificate. While masses have loved it, critics felt it could have been an even better movie. Raayan is just a little short of Indian 2, which is the biggest Tamil opener of the year with Rs 26 crores. While it tanked badly, Raayan is gaining more recognition. Dhanush’s Captain Miller got an opening of Rs 8.08 crores at the box office.
Raayan has opening way better than Vijay Sethupathi and Nithilan Swaminathan’s Maharaja that made Rs 4.45 crores on day one. Even that film had a big element of violence and gore. Raayan got the A certificate for its blood-soaked action scenes. The movie is close to two and half hours. SJ Suryah is the main antagonist of the movie. Raayan has seen a surge of 50 per cent in bookings after the first show.
Well, it is doing great for an adult-rated movie. It has fared better than Shahid Kapoor’s Kabir Singh that made Rs 21 crores on its opening day. But it is nowhere close to Animal that raked in a fantastic Rs 60 crores on day one. Both these movies were made by Sandeep Reddy Vanga. Animal went on to make close to Rs 900 crores worldwide.
Dhanush is being loved immensely for his performance in Raayan as is Selvaraghavan. SJ Suryah is terrific as usual. The year 2024 has been one for Malayalam industry with back to back hits. For Tamil films, it has been somewhat dull so far. Indian 2 failed to live upto its hype.
