India Forums recently conducted an exclusive interview with the renowned singer and actress, Ila Arun, who shared insights into her remarkable career, the evolving landscape of cinema, and her thoughts on the OTT platform. The actor-singer was seen promoting her telefilm 'Peechha Karti Parchhaiyaan'.

Q: Ila Ji, you made your debut in 1983 with the film Mandi. How do you view the changes in the narrative of women-centric films from then to now?

Ila Arun: There has definitely been a significant change, and it’s for the better. Earlier, in our times, women were often portrayed as sacrificial and submissive, like Nutan Ji's character in Sujaata or Bandini. The love was unfulfilled, and the woman was often from an exploited class. Today, however, the stories are much more diverse, and women are portrayed in a variety of powerful roles. This evolution in storytelling is a very positive sign.

Q: What are your thoughts on the recent women-centric films? Do you have a personal favorite?

Ila Arun: Gangubai Kathiawadi stands out for me. I often think about how, if this film had been made a few years ago, I could have played a significant role. I even joke that I’m a bit upset with Sanjay Leela Bhansali for not considering me for it. But it's all in good spirits, of course!

Q: With the advent of OTT platforms, do you feel that the industry has undergone significant changes?

Ila Arun: Absolutely! I feel like I’ve been reborn because of OTT platforms. When COVID-19 hit, OTT emerged as a powerful medium, bringing forward films that were positive and meaningful. OTT provided opportunities for artists like me, who seek good content and strong scripts. The platforms have been a blessing, especially for those of us who prioritize quality over quantity.

Q: You’ve been part of many successful projects on OTT, like "Aarya." What was your experience working on these shows?

Ila Arun: Working on "Aarya" was a profound experience. The role I played in Season 3, where I portrayed a character of royalty, was challenging and exciting. Standing alongside an actress as powerful as Sushmita Sen and maintaining the weight of my character was tough, but Ram Madhvani (the director) believed in me, and I’m proud of what we accomplished.

Q: You mentioned your autobiography. Can you tell us more about it?

Ila Arun: Yes, my book is coming out in November, published by Penguin. It’s an autobiography where people will get to know about my life. Writing this book was a significant accomplishment for me, and I’m looking forward to sharing my journey with everyone.

Q: Zeenat Aman has been sharing her stories from the industry on social media. Would you ever share such stories?

Ila Arun: (Laughs)

My lips are sealed until my book is released! After that, maybe I’ll share a story or two, but for now, I’m keeping everything under wraps.

Q: Do you miss the era when theater was a significant part of entertainment?

Ila Arun: Absolutely. Theater is a living art form that I deeply cherish. The thrill of live performance, the connection with the audience, and the culture surrounding it are irreplaceable. Despite the rise of cinema and OTT, I miss the unique environment that theater provides.

Zee Theatre, India's premier archival platform, presents the compelling teleplay Peechha Karti Parchhaiyaan, featuring an ensemble cast led by the esteemed theatre, film, and music artist Ila Arun. Joining her are theatre veteran KK Raina and popular television actors Param Singh, Priyamvada Kant, and Vijay Kashyap. This intergenerational drama, originally staged in 2016, marks the pinnacle of the longstanding creative partnership between Ila Arun and KK Raina.

Catch Peechha Karti Parchhaiyaan on Tata Play Theatre on 25th August at 2 PM and 8 PM.
