It has been a quite a number of years since the dreaded "C" word began inflicting terror in our minds. Cancer, which has over 120 variants, still means death to most of us, as it has already claimed the lives of many. One moment you're the happiest person in the world; and the next moment you or a loved one is diagnosed with this life changing disease. Many crumble in front of the disease, but some grab it by the horns and battle it forcefully. Surviving cancer is no easy task; it requires a great deal of persistence and dedication. One has to ignore the darkness that binds him/her and have unconditional faith. Today, BollyCurry has decided to take a look at a few Bollywood celebrities who have won against the mean battle called cancer.

Anurag Basu, the critically acclaimed writer of Barfi! (2012), was diagnosed with acute promyelocytic leukemia, a variant of blood cancer back in 2004, during the filming of Tumsa Nahin Dekha (2004). Though he was traumatized when he first came to know about his malady, he donned a brave facade and crusaded his way through the disease. The doctors estimated his life to last a couple of months; the fact that his survival chances are rare didn't deter him from his passion for movies. He wrote scripts for movies like Gangster (2006) and Life In A Metro (2007) while in his hospital bed. His story teaches us to never underestimate the power of a human being and inspires us to fight on.

The gorgeous Manisha Koirala was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2012. The Dil Se (1998) actress, who calls herself a cancer crusader, dissented to succumb to the disease and flew to New York to undergo treatment. She kicked the disease in its head and came back healthy after a couple of months. She even posted pictures of herself after her chemotherapy session online to prove that cancer is nothing to be scared of. Cancer happened and she dealt with it. She holds no bitterness about her cancer experience and feels happier and content.

The legendary yesteryear actress Mumtaz, who appeared in movies like Loafer (1973) and Prem Kahani (1975) to mention a few, suffered from breast cancer in 2002. She went through chemotherapy for a year, however, it made her continually sick. She lost her hair and eyelashes and used to wear scarves. All thanks to her determination, she defeated the disease at an age of 54. She believes that cancer originates from emotional turmoil and has vowed to stay away from anything that hurts her post her stint with cancer.

Emraan Hashmi and his son, Ayaan's battle with cancer

Earlier this year, Emraan Hashmi published "The Kiss of Life: How A Superhero and My Son Defeated Cancer", a book that talks about his family's struggle with his son Ayaan's cancer treatment. His son Ayaan was diagnosed with second-stage Wilms' tumor, a type of cancer which affects the kidneys. The book throws light on his experiences as a father dealing with a child's diagnosis of cancer, and how his little boy drew inspiration from superheroes and fought against all odds. Hashmi played the best role of his life when he pretended to be batman for his son and helped him defeat cancer.
