While her acting debut was through Kannada cinema in the 2006 Kannada release titled Aishwarya, Deepika took no while in gearing up to showcase herself through world's second largest cinema industry, Bollywood, only a year after that, with Farah Khan's Om Shanti Om co starring the Baadshah Khan Shahrukh himself. OSO made her an overnight debuting star, and of course won her the prestigious Best Female Debutan Filmfare trophy for 2007.
Back to her interesting, and tad lesser known childhood, Dippy has no Bollywood origins. From her birth town, the capital of Denmark, the Padukones moved to Bangalore, Karnatak when Deepika was merely an eleven month old baby. Belonging to the Chitrapur Saraswat Brahmin Hindu believers sect, Deepika's mother tongue is Konkani. On February 2nd, 1991, Deepika became the elder sister, to youngest in the Padukone family, her sister Anisha. While father Prakash Padukone has been a famous badminton player, their mother is a travel agent. Schooling, which was pursued in Bangalore, advanced from Sophia High School to Mount Carmel College; the latter being the time wherein Deepika also represented her institute in badminton at State Level. However, unlike her father, Dippy had not much inclination to pursue her career in sports, and opted for modeling instead, even before graduating. Spotted for the first time in a ramp competition in NLS Bangalore, Deepika received accolades in Kingfisher organized Fashion Awards, and also at Idea Zee Fashion Awards. Additionally, she has had to her credit modeling assignments from the likes of Liril, Dabur Lal, Close Up and Limca, while also having been brand ambassador for Jewels of India, Kingfisher Airlines, Levi Strauss, Tissor SA, and was even chosen the international spokesperson for beauty brand Maybelline.
Her Bollywood career, which was kick-started by the mega blockbuster Om Shanti Om, saw its highs and lows in the form consequent releases over the last couple years - Bachna Ae Haseeno (opposite ex-beau Ranbir Kapoor), Chandani Chowk To China (opposite Akshay Kumar), Love Aaj Kal (opposite Saif Ali Khan), the most recent 2010 releases, Karthik Calling Karthik, Housefull, Break Ke Baad and Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey.
Less known also, especially to her world over fan following, may be the fact that in 2009 onwards, Deepika has been writing weekly columns for HT City, the lifestyle supplement of national newspaper Hindustan Times. These columns appear online on social network ,Desimartini.
Having
previously dated her co star Ranbir Kapoor, the duo who were cozy and
pretty close for a while, broke up in the latter part of last year; only
to give rise to many rumors about the likelihood of Deepika seeing the
Mallya heir Siddharth, especially following the IPL season 3 games of
2010.
All that said, we hope the actress could take time off to celebrate a much deserved extremely eventful and loving birthday. Also wishing for her, on her special day which nearly coincides with welcoming a new year - some news of bigger hits, the remaining Khans added to her 'been there done that' list, and of course, some concrete happy news on her love life front!
Happy Birthday Deepika!
