Ang Lee couldn't think of 'Life of Pi' without 3D

Chennai, Oct 31 (IANS) Taiwanese-American film director Ang Lee says his latest offering "Life Of Pi", an English adventure drama, would have been incomplete had it not been in 3D format.

"I can't think of this film in 3D. It may have been cheap in 2D, but the output would've been unsatisfactory. Thanks to 3D, I managed to take this film beyond imagination and new possibilities," Lee, who is in India for the movie's promotion, told reporters here Wednesday.

Releasing Nov 21, the movie is based on the novel of the same name by Canadian writer Yann Martel. Its story tells the tale of a young boy named Pi, who is the only person to survive the sinking a cargo ship. He finds himself on a lifeboat with a hyena, a zebra, an orangutan, and a Bengal tiger.

Delhi-based Indian boy Suraj Sharma plays young Pi in the film while Tabu and Irrfan Khan feature in key roles.

Lee says he didn't make this film as a cinematic gimmick to attract audience.

"Typically producers persuade directors to make films in 3D to mint money. However, in this case, I convinced my producers to make the film in 3D because I wanted the output to be visually engaging," he said.
