Part 3

Armaan thought he was living inside a comic show. He had lied about having a double dinner date with his colleague and now that same colleague was standing in front of him! The universe was surely testing him.

No way !!! said Abhira and Raghav in unison in a high pitched voice.

Armaan looked at Abhira in utter shock.

Oh my God Armaan. What a great surprise bro chirped Tara.

And the chaos grew manifolds.

Who was this man beside Tara and how did he know his Abhira ?? The thought of Abhira discovering his lie seemed like a miniscule matter now as he wanted to know something else .

She is my colleague said Armaan looking at Abhira and then turning his head he said Tara this is my WIFE, Abhi...

Abhira, right ? Girl I have heard so much about your humour, can't wait to jam on your jokes ! And guys, this is my boyfriend of almost 5 years, Raghav. But I guess our better halves already know each other Armaan.

Armaan grew imprudent and blurted out

Really, and how is that Mr. Raghav ?

Raghav Sir is my professor. He's taking business law this semester replied Abhira.

But we also know each other from our good old college days. We shared the same town, same district court as well right, high- fived Raghav. Any mention of Mussoorie would make Abhira's heart happy. She squeaked like a little child returning the high five.

But somebody's heart was on fire. It burnt. It hurt. Every time his wife revealed traces of her inner child to another man, his heart ripped. He wanted to witness this child-like version of her again and again but wanted to hide it, protect it from the rest of the world. This pure, unbridled version of his Abhira, he wanted to exclusively reserve it for himself. And every time he saw another man laugh with her through her innocence, he felt insecure. Insecure if that man's eyes met his Abhira's eyes in those moments, they would keep wanting to look at those talking eyes again and again just like him. He felt helpless because he couldn't stop either of them. And that helplessness, insecurity built rage within him. It made him feel collywobbles in the stomach, eyes twitching and ears all blazing red.

Just then Abhira leaned into him, his heart skipped a beat, she pressed her nose on his neck just below his ear, he forgot to breathe in that moment, she brought her mouth close to his ear and whispered

Wow Armaan, one colleague stood you up and you bumped into another one !

He took a breath now. But his cheeks flushed. How was this woman capable of raging his heart one moment and making it skip a beat the very next. And Thank God, she didn't catch his lie. Maybe he had forgotten to mention Tara's name earlier and it helped now. Oh but, good lord, he had just got rid of Kabir and now another guy stood knocking on his door of insecurity. Who was this Raghav guy ? She knew him from Mussoorie ! Were they childhood friends or what and now this reunion at college. It meant this guy Raghav would see his Abhira every damn day.

Armaan, I was thinking why don't we all have dinner together? Since we all sort of know each other, it won't get awkward as well. What say guys.

Sounds great babe said Raghav.

Armaan side-eyed Raghav's reply. No matter how hard he wanted to refuse, social obligations couldn't let him deny. He forced a smile and they all sat down together. The starters were laid down. Raghav was discussing his life abroad with Tara interrupting with details about managing their long distance relationship. Tara conveniently asked Abhira about how she and Armaan met . They both looked at each other seemingly traveling back to the day when they first met in Mussoorie. Abhira answered Armaan had come to celebrate his Dadisa's birthday at the resort, me and my Mumma managed. And I broke the windshield of Armaan's car with a turtle.

Anddddd then to appease my miffed family she performed a Rajasthani dance completed Armaan. Now they were both laughing recalling this memory. How swiftly had time flown by.

You guys are so cute together ! exclaimed Tara.

That's some interesting way to meet your spouse. Well Abhira how is Uncle Kipling ? He was my father's friend, I remember him hopping down the Mall Road in his suspender belt said Raghav while having his peta bread with hummus.

He is doing good and yes he still wears those suspender belts beamed Abhira.

Again that damned smile for him ! His jaw clenched.

By the way, here is your handkerchief. You left it with me in the canteen corridor. I have washed it for you Sir said Abhira after digging through her clutch.

Handkerchief ?!! Why would he offer my wife HIS hankerchief ?

The impulsive angst rose and he asked in a split second Abhira why did you need borrow his hankerchief ?

Actually Armaan, Abhira....

Sorry Raghav but I asked my WIFE said Armaan with a stretched smile.

I had a little breakdown in college today. I ...I got emotional thinking about Mumma while walking down the memory lane. Sir was nearby, so he uplifted my spirits she completed.

And suddenly he couldn't care about anything else more than the fact that he was not around when his Abhira needed him today. How would have she felt. How difficult would it have been for her to wipe her own tears. Those tears shed and he was not there to hold them. The anger of other man offering help seem to belittle the guilt of not being there. The insecurity was washed away by the realisation that his wife didn't confide in him regarding her breakdown. Was he not worthy enough of experiencing her vulnerability ? Clearly he needed to talk it out with Abhira. She should have called him, rushed to him and confided in him but why did she not ?!!

The dinner date was over. They were waiting for the valet to drive back their car from the parking lot.

Thank you buddy said Armaan extending his arm. Thank you for tending to Abhira. I mean it seriously.

Anytime Armaan. It's a perk students ought to get from a Professor. It's called emotional mentoring.

Armaan smiled back at him, the only genuine smile from him, that evening.

As they sat in the car, Armaan stayed silent. The ride back home was a muddle in his mind. He couldn't comprehend the reason for the lack of sharing.

It was now past midnight. Abhira sat in the macrame swing facing the balcony. Armaan had ordered chocolate souffle. The order arrived, he took it out in her favourite petal shaped purple glass plate. He tapped her from behind and then he saw what brightened his eyes. He saw her eyes smiling, the same child like innocence, beaming through her eyes and this smile was for HIM.

He sat down on the other swing and while she relished her souffle. With one hand on his chin, he saw her truly enjoy something after a long time.

Abhira, why didn't you tell me about the situation in the college earlier ?

Armaan I was myself processing everything.

Abhira, I called you in college right, tumne tabh bhi nahi btaya .

Armaan, you had won the case. Tum khush the, mai khush thi. I didn't want to ruin the moment.

Abhiraaaa. Nothing, no win is more important than you. I want to be the first person you come and tell EVERYTHING. The silly things, the embarassing things, the things you learnt, your failure stories, your pain, your vulnerabilities. EVERYTHING.

Armaan, I would have told you. Just after the dinner. That's it. Mere paas bhi kaha koi aur hai tumhare sivaye.

Why did his eyes fill with emotions of joy hearing that. He felt calm now.

Waise Armaan, you remember I told you about my college crush once.

Hmmm, I remember he said widening his eyes.

Well , will you believe if I tell you that he happens to be my Professor and the boyfriend of your colleague.

And the blood gushing through the nerves was back. The pounding in the heart was back. It was the brief calm before the storm.

To be continued....
