In a conversation with Allure, Alia Bhatt revealed that Karan Johar wanted young girls to think sarees are cool after watching her in Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani. “Karan Johar [the film's director] said, ‘I want you to only wear saris in the film, and we need to make a saree cool. Young girls should be like, 'Oh, I only want to wear a saree,’ ” the actor said.
Please read my previous posts to connect. Not going to type again :)
young girls, saree and cool - are the key words here. In that order.
Also you modified the title to add “again” which is not mentioned in above lines. So yes KJo never said it was not cool before or he is going to make cooler.
This is my understanding from the quote - The great Karan Johar thought Alia's character will bring about a new fashion trend of wearing these typical 'Manish Malhotra' sarees and will be 'seen' as 'cool' by young girls. He thought Manish and Alia will bring in some sort of fashion wave.
The claim was outrageous and funnily not even followed by the actress herself in real life. Sari ko cool everyday wear if one wants to make, start with oneself first. Wear it to shoot, wear it to the airport, wear it in random spottings . High profile fashion events many actresses wear sarees of different kinds. Someone pointed out here how earlier Karan had mocked Kangana's airport fashion of wearing a saree and big sunglasses. Karan hypocrite Johar needs a better memory I see.

That's a really good point actually. If they believed in this saree fashion statement so much, why didn't they follow it themselves? Why didn't Alia promote the film by wearing the sarees everywhere she goes?
In contrast, for promoting Gadar 2, Ameesha Patel went everywhere in the same style of clothes. I could post dozens of pics from her similar looks that she paraded herself in. She was consistent unlike this Alia.

No cure for biased understanding.
You are clearly modifying and adding your own masala to it by adding “again” which is no where in the article, comparing movie to real life and what not keep it up!
Alia hai to topic hit hai regardless
Sarees, Karan, Manish and Rocky aur Rani:
1) Karan wanted to rekindle his success with K3G - in a mix of a 'modern' old vs young but still family-oriented version - failed (imo)
2) Karan wanted to quasi make Alia a 'Yash Chopra heroine' with all the sarees - failed (imo)
3) promotion for his friend Manish
I already wrote that - in my feeling - wearing a sari has nothing to do with 'cool'... to me, it's more about feminine, nice, beautiful, gracious (etc) - regardless the kind of blouse (or not blouse)...and regardless the physique/age the girl/woman has.
In the movie, I got the perception that it is 'overdone' (I had liked it more the way Karan did it in his former movies) and also Alia isn't a 'Yash Chopra heroine' - neither physically nor in her movements (and why should she...she has her own personality, hasn't she?)...in addition, I sometimes felt something being 'off' between the character Alia had to play, what she wore and the movements.
