TOTW #46: Jealousy

We all feel so many emotions at a time. Happy, Despair, Anger, Fatigue. And some of us have learned to keep them in check.

Yet there is one emotion that springs forward in the most unexpected of times, rearing its ugly head and settling in our minds. And it's so prominent that it overlaps our senses. The emotion we call....

JEALOUSY

Jealousy comes from a place of deep hurt, insecurity or fear. It's something we've all experienced at least once, no matter how insignificant it might have been. And it has a deep rooted place in every literature that is revered. From Shakespeare's plays to Stephen King's novels, each literary work has jealousy incorporated at the base of the story.

Yet, nothing portrays the feeling of envy as well as music does. And it does that beautifully in different ways every single time.

The green-eyed monster can stem from the insecurity of not being good enough, whether for a partner or yourself.

Or from the complete opposite of that: being better for someone than their partner.

Or from the possessiveness that someone or something is eyeing him/her with the same feelings as you.

It can even be caused by something as little as someone having things you'd want for yourself. In school, it can be about grades. In corporate world, it can be about better position and pay. And in normal life, it can just be about money or power.

Oooh..jealousy that green-eyed monster! It attacks the best of us, we wouldn't be human if we didn't feel jealous of someone/ something at some point in our lives.

Why you feel jealous is one thing, but feeling jealous can make you act irrationally and it can make your true self disappear.

This song encapsulates that aftermath of jealousy, the apologies that follow and the regret that hits.

Another song that showcases how jealousy can rear its ugly head when it stems from insecurity... the guy sees a popular kid (Johnny) that everyone loves and how he tries to get all the girls and immediately gets possessive about his own girl, warning him to stay away!

The lyrics are dated, and can seem nonsensical but it's probably jargon and slang that was used in the 50s.

Here's a strange way of counteracting jealousy... maybe it's something you cannot have, but if no one else has it, you won't feel the need to be jealous! Great strategy, na?
