Ben Stokes stuck by his man, nursing him through his jitters and even burning all of England's reviews in his honour, as Vithushan Ehantharajah wrote in his match piece last night. If nothing else, at least he now knows what the Test arena actually feels like. Onwards and upwards, and no regrets. It's very much the approach that this England set-up choose to embrace. Today is a new day.
Day 1 of the much awaited Test series belonged to India despite some resistance shown by Ben Stokes. The England's captain's stroke-filled 70 helped boost the visitors total to 246, but it seemed rather inadequate as Yashasvi Jaiswal's unbeaten 70-ball 76 ensured that the hosts finished the day comfortably placed at 119 for 1, trailing by just 127 runs. They'll hope that the second day turns out to be a batting day as they look to seize control over the Test. England's inexperienced spinners took a beating yesterday, but can they turn up better today?
'365 runs and 11 wickets on the first day. It did look like a day 3 wicket yesterday, there was spin and bounce and there were odd occasions when the top was disturbed. The wicket has a bit of wear and tear, there could be some variable bounce, the spinners will have to pull their lengths back. Consistency of lengths will be the key', reckon Murli Kartik and Kevin Pietersen, in their pitch report.
Joe Root, right-arm off break, comes into the attack
It's January 26th and it's a Republic Day holiday. So do expect lots to flock in and they'll hope for a good day of batting from India. The players are out in the middle and we're set to resume. Jaiswal takes strike, it'll be spin to start Day 2 and it's Joe Root - Stokes throwing a surprise to start the day. A slip and a FSL in place, he's starting from round the wicket.
Root to Jaiswal, out Caught&Bowled!! Root has his man now, he has a happy knack of taking Indian wickets, but it's a giveaway from young Jaiswal - was nicely tossed up and dipped onto the left-hander - Jaiswal leant forward on the drive, but he doesn't account for the late dip, gets a thick inside edge and lobs it back at the bowler - Root leaps and completes a two-handed catch. Just the start England were looking going into the second day. An attractive knock, but Jaiswal will be disappointed at having not converted it into a hundred. Jaiswal c and b Root 80(74) [4s-10 6s-3]
Root to Jaiswal, THATS OUT!! Caught&Bowled!!
