The final group game at the Chepauk stage. Maybe, just maybe the final appearance that Thala Dhoni makes at his adopted home ground. An adopted home ground that has showered him with so much love and adulation. And Dhoni in return has reciprocated that love by giving the local CSK fans so many memorable nights, so many reasons to celebrate. Four titles, an enviable home record and countless celebratory nights. Even tonight, the CSK management have some plans chalked out to appreciate the Chepauk crowd. It is sure to be an emotional night in the office…

Match 61 of IPL 2023. We have had a bit of a blowout in the first match of the day. It is now about Kolkata Knight Riders hosting Chennai Super Kings. It is a must-win match for KKR, who have 10 points from 12 matches, but more importantly it is a big match for CSK to remain reasonably confident of a two-two finish.

What do KKR need to go their way for them to qualify? Firstly they need to win their remaining games. In the words of S Rajesh: "Their best case would be for Titans to win their last two, Royal Challengers to beat Royals and then lose their last two, Super Giants and Royals to lose their last two, and Punjab Kings to lose to Delhi Capitals in their return game on Wednesday. Then Titans, Super Kings and Mumbai Indians will qualify, leaving Knight Riders and Punjab Kings to fight for the fourth spot on 14 points. There isn't much to choose between their NRRs at the moment (-0.357 for KKR and -0.268 for Punjab Kings) which means Knight Riders will still have to win handsomely to lift their NRR."

But leaving aside the emotions, there is a game of cricket to be played. A game of cricket with a lot riding on it. KKR travel to Chepauk knowing that a win and nothing else will keep them alive in the competition. The one positive for them is they have a spin attack that could pose some serious questions if a traditional Chepauk wicket is presented. CSK on the other hand know that they need one more win to guarantee a return to Chepauk for the qualifier. They are on a winning streak of two games, which surely would have been three had it not been for the rain in Lucknow which caused a no result. A crucial contest coming up, stick on for the pitch report and team news….

Pitch report | Sanjay Manjrekar and Matthew Hayden: 61 meters square boundary on one side, 70 on the other, and 77 down the ground. (Pitch) Looked the same back in 2010 when I was playing. Really really dry. Lack of grass. (Ball is) Going to hold up in this wicket. When you think back to the last innings here - Moeen Ali ripping a couple past the left-hander's bat. Going to be a lot of spin. Got to bat first, no doubt about it. Par score about 160-165.
