'Toofan' review: Farhan Akhtar’s our million dollar baby… Not!Written By: Pallabi Dey Purkayastha WION Web Team

STORY HIGHLIGHTS

Directed by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, 'Toofaan' is streaming on Amazon Prime Video. The sports drama features Bollywood actors Mrunal Thakur, Paresh Rawal and others in pivotal roles.

A rags-to-riches story is a sure-fire tearjerker, and especially makes for a good cry when that rag-wearing gentleman is a Hindi-speaking, slum-dwelling Indian. Case in point: Eight Oscars’ winner ‘Slumdog Millionaire’, if you’re still asking. Why only ridicule Danny Boyle for borrowing India’s sob story and presenting it to a global audience? For time immemorial, Bollywood filmmakers, too, have milked that trope—albeit a few rehashes in the underlying theme, if at all—and found their way to the hallways of several award shows: some duly deserved, others not so much. This year, repeating that cycle of cinematic revisionism is Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, with his latest sports drama ‘Toofaan’.

The odd yet imperative conclusion one comes to about Mehra’s repertoire is that he is a storyteller always standing on the extreme ends of the film spectrum—either you get a ‘Rang De Basanti’ or a ‘Mirzya’; there’s no in-between. Unfortunately, with ‘Toofan’, he has inclined towards the latter. What starts off as a Dongri’s ‘gunda-mawali’ Ajju Bhai aka Aziz Ali (Farhan Akhtar) extorting money before finally realizing his true calling in life is, in fact, boxing, ends up becoming a plea for communal harmony, an exposé within India’s boxing federation. And then there’s the forced-down-your-throat romance between pro-choice Ananya Prabhu (Mrunal thakur) and ‘The Storm’ himself.

The film’s momentum dips early on, with moments of rushed revival coming in the form of an amiable Farhan’s easy-on-the-eye screen presence, only to fall flat again seconds later. Of all things that could have—and has—gone wrong with this sports drama/ social commentary, the dialogues seem to be the worst. What were writers Vijay Maurya and Anjum Rajabali thinking when they put these dated, 90s-esque dialogues to the paper: “Naali main pada hua mila tha (I found you in a ditch)”, “tereko slap degi main (loosely translates to: I shall slap you)”, among other equally melodramatic sentences that the actors mouth. Second to that is the (unaccredited) background score: laden with 80s Bollywood-ish melancholy in intense scenes and over-the-top glee in heroic moments.

Mrunal Thakur is an affable presence in the film—sans that put-on colloquial Mumbaiya accent—and she makes an effort to have the kind of rapport Farhan’s previous female leads had with him, Sonam Kapoor & Co., but the pair has very little chemistry going on between them and it translates on screen. This movie is no ‘Bhaag Milkha Bhaag’ (by Mehra, again) and Farhan knows that, too. He more or less maintains a solid grip over his character and changes his approach with the ever-changing plot but the narrative of ‘Toofaan’ is beyond saving, good acting or not. Paresh Rawal as Coach Nanu Prabhu is more for the free-ka-gyaan and less for the role he has been hired to do. Big, bombastic words do not make up for the lack of depth in his character.

At the risk of sounding hyper-analytical, we are going to say that ‘Toofaan’ is a hotchpotch of ‘Panga’, ‘Dangal’, Mehra’s own marvelous ‘Bhaag Milkha Bhaag’ and every other sports drama-cum-rags-to-riches-cum-road-to-redemption story you can think of, and that is heartbreaking because a good director fails on insipidity grounds and a good actor, remains underutilized.

How did Aziz Ali become ‘toofaan’ (splash/storm) in quick succession is anybody’s guess—a parallel character even goes on to the extent of comparing him to Muhammad Ali, twice!—but it is no Oscar-winning ‘Million Dollar Baby’. At best, we will call it the gender-reversed ‘Mary Kom’… at best!

Movie Name: Toofaan

Toofaan Cast: Farhan Akhtar, Mrunal Thakur

Toofaan Director: Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra

Toofaan Stars: 3/5

Toofaan is the story of an orphan Aziz Ali (Farhan Akhtar) who has been brought up by a Gangster Jaffar Bhai (Vijay Raaz in a guest appearance). Alongside Farhan, the film features Mrunal Thakur, Paresh Rawal, Supriya Pathak and Hussain Dalal in pivotal roles and is written by veteran screenwriter, Anjum Rajabali. For those who are still searching if Aziz Ali is inspired from a real person, he’s not. Toofaan is a fictional sports drama.

So Aziz grows up to be a rowdy who extorts ‘protection’ money from people or settles property disputes. One such incident leads him to meet Dr. Ananya Prabhu (Mrunal Thakur) who makes him face the typical dilemma: to be or not to be a pugilist. And of course, we know what his choice would be.

Anyways, Aziz is told that to be a professional boxer he needs to learn from one of the best boxing coaches, Nana Prabhu (Paresh Rawal). Though Nana is a great coach and almost treats boxing equal to his faith, he doesn’t shy away from exposing his islamophobia outside the ring. Hereon, the story takes the usual Bollywood script route of struggle, love, society’s hypocrisy towards inter-faith religion, the fall and rise again, with a tint of social message thrown in between.

Despite the film being predictable, it's equally pleasant. Thanks to a solid performance by each and every member of the cast and the able hands of Rakeysh Om Prakash Mehra. Farhan Akhtar delivers a convincing performance as a boxer who is in search of dignity and love. His efforts to get into the shape and demeanour of a boxer pays through. In fact, it’s time he offers an unconditional royalty to his director Rakeysh for giving him two roles which demanded a totally different level of fitness.

Mrunal Thakur is like carrot cake with vanilla ice-cream (watch the film to understand the connection). She delivers a sweet yet entirely yummy performance. Hussain Dalal is a treat to watch. He packs a punch during both emotional as well as funny parts of the film. Paresh Rawal and Supriya Pathak are actors who are masters of their craft, and hardly require validation of a critic on their performance.

Despite the slacktivism over whether you should revenge-watch or totally ban Farhan Akhtar starrer Toofaan, Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s film is a feel good sports drama that will keep you entertained. Honestly, the job of a critic is to judge whether a film merits the audience's time regardless of the controversy around it; and this one does.

The Plot

The plot of the film is indeed straightforward where it is about Aziz Ali (Akhtar) and how is a local hooligan working for a big gangster. He packs a punch and delivers many punches too but one fine day, something happens and he is introduced to the world of boxing. He is immediately allured into it and goes on to become a big name in a short period. Situations, however, change too soon as he is banned from the sport for five years and now sets for a comeback.

The Good

The Character of Ananya

While, the film is about Akhtar and his character of Ali indeed, it is the female characterization in Toofan that takes the cake. Over the years, we have witnessed how in male-led sports films, the female characters are literally just there as fillers but that is not the case with Toofan. The character of Ananya (Mrunal Thakur) is as important as Ali and in fact, she is the reason for Ali's actions on more occasions than not. This is a note for multiple filmmakers that one can pay attention to female characterization as well in a male-led sports film.

Farhan Akhtar's Performance

Indeed, Akhtar is definitely the best thing about the film. His dedication to physical transformation was witnessed with Bhaag Milkha Bhaag already but with Toofan, the actor goes further steps ahead. Here, he isn't just a fit boxer but at a point in the film, he sports a pot belly as well and then goes back to being fit. His blood and sweat reflects on the screen and the actor is also phenomenal with his performance in the emotional scenes and carries the film really well.

Big Moments & Boxing Sequences

And finally, Toofan has some scintillating moments as we would have expected. The boxing sequences are brilliantly choreographed and not for a moment would you feel that it isn't authentic. Be it the first fight or be it Toofan's climax fight, the emotions are organic and goes in perfect tandem with the music and background score attached to those sequences.

The Music

With two brilliant tracks surrounding the word Toofan, one mellow track called Purvaiya and Ananaya, Shankar Ehsaan Loy do a great job with the music of the film. There is one instance where two songs appear literally one after the other making it too much but that is too no fault of the music directors. The background score also deserves special mention especially for the nail-biting boxing scenes.

The Not-So-Good

Vijay Raaz's Character

We all know the phenomenal actor Vijay Raaz is. But his character in Toofan is probably one of the worst-written ones. Only present for two and a half scenes in the film, it isn't his lack of role that is a problem but you would question the presence of it. Shown as Ali's godfather and boss, he gets really mad when Ali tells him he wants to quit being a hooligan but then, throughout the film, nothing happens from Raaz's side. It is too convenient and it seems writer Anjum Rajabali forgot to add shades to his role.

The Length

There are plenty of moments to keep you glued to the film and there is no denying that but that cannot take away from the fact that the film is indeed ridiculously long. Clocking over 2 hours and 40 minutes, it could have been shorter.

The Plot Twist

There is one plot twist, which while shocking seems extremely convenient in an ode to give the audience a mega moment of shock but not necessarily feels organic.

The Performances

Apart from Akhtar, Mrunal Thakur as Ananya also does a good job but there are moments where her performances feels too OTT and unauthentic. Nevertheless, she pulls you right back in almost instantly. The standout performer, however, has to be the veteran Paresh Rawal. He is fantastic as a strict, cunning and even religion-biased coach and father. Other roles including Supriya Pathak, Dr. Mohan Agashe and a few special appearances are enough to make sure the acting department does their job well.

The Verdict

Toofan was definitely made for the big screen and it is rather prevalent when you see the film. In fact, if it was seen on the big screen, the length might not have been that much of a problem as well. But even then, Toofan is definitely a worthy watch especially for Akhtar and his dedication to the character.

Rating - ** 1/2 (2.5/5)
