Tanhai:
Sameer kept pondering on Naina's words. How could he think of quitting so easily. What hurt him most was he had forgotten his Nanu's teaching " There is no failure except in no longer trying" . His Nanu was a man of positive thinking and vision. Nanu had told him " There is no such thing as Failure only learning experiences. Couple of failures and he had quit. How could he believe in Daddi and Mr Somani's words ,they were never his well wishers. His mistake had hurt the only person who had loved him truly his Naina.
" I know you are disappointed but you need to roll up your sleeves and redouble your efforts" he said to himself. " I am sorry Naina ,Mai kuch banke tumhare pass aaounga , bas mera intezaar karna " wiping his tears and with a determination to get her back he set out to try his luck in the city of dreams Mumbai.
Naina was waiting at the arrival gates for her roommate Pooja. She was a bit apprehensive to stay with her, apart from Preeti she had never shared a room with anyone . Though few interactions thorough emails Pooja seemed to be a fun loving and friendly girl.
"Hiiiiiiii Naina??"
" Yes, Pooja? " and she got immediately a hug from her. Helping with her luggage she said "Train se chaltein hai yahan par public transport bahut accha hai. When they say Swiss time, you can guarantee any train or bus will leave at the posted time. If you’re one minute late, you’ll be waving your ride good bye, even if it’s the last one of the evening. Hamare yahan jaisa bilkul nahi, Mumbai local tum kabhi travel nahi ki ho isliye samaj nahi sakti tum. Mujhe kitni khushi huvi thi pata hai pehli baar jab poori khali metro ya train dekhiti. " She laughed remembering the Mumbai local. Pooja kept on talking about her experiences and in a very short time Naina could sense Pooja was a chatter box,
After getting a monthly pass and mobile Nokai 3410 at the airport, Pooja showed Naina how to check train and bus timings. They boarded the train to a place called Brugg , a small town in the Swiss canton of Aarau. The beautiful alphine meadows were a sight to the sore eyes. A place where she saw a perfect harmony between flora and fauna.
" Shaadi ke baad na hum Switzerland ghumne jayenge , maine list banake rakhi hai aur hum kya kya karenge sab plan kiya hai, Aye Hasi wadiyan aye khula asasman he had sung few lines for her indirectly implying what he meant making her blush to the core " the memory of it brought a smile to the aching heart. He had rightly said " jab hum dur rahenge dekhna yahi baatein humein sahara dengi". Her Sameer had classic choices , so how could he not think of this beautiful place. Only thing ordinary in his life was her and now she meant nothing to him. "At least I can visit those places which he had mentioned and see what he wanted to show. Woh nahi to uski yaadein hi sahi " she said to herself.
" Milne ki umeed toh nahi hai tujhse
Lekin Kaise keh doon ki Intezaar nahi hai"
Its was a one bed room well furnished apartment next to the office. It was located in the serene beauty of the small city amidst nature pleasant enough to sooth her.
"Tum fresh ho jao , mai dinner ready karti houn . Aaj aaram kar lena kuch din ke liye tumhe neend thik se nahi hogi. Pooja giving all the details left her. It was summer time and even at 6 it was pretty bright. She opened the windows and could see the Swiss Alps the most dramatic scenery in the world. Many Bollywood songs had covered this scenery. Inhaling the warmth of the nature she soothed her painful soul.
Sameer was trying to adjust in the city that never sleeps. He got accustomed to local train travelling after hearing many a times "Pehli baar local me aaya hai kya? " . He had tasted the street food and most of the times he survived on Vada Pav when struggling between travelling different places for interviews. His heart would usually hum the song "Aye dil hai mushkil jeena yahaan.. Zara hatke, sara bachke yeh hai Bambai meri jaan."
Mumbai also didn't give him any immediate break . He had cleared couple of interviews but the companies didn't issue any call letter. Recession impact was slowly coming down but the market had not yet recovered completely. Every evening he used to go and spend couple of hours at Nariman point. The waves hitting the shore would bring peace to his heart as if the sea could understand the inner turmoil he was going through.
Sahil pe baite yun sochte hai Aaj
Kaun zyada majboor hai
Yeh kinara jo chal nahi sakta
ya woh lehar jo thaher nahi sakti
(Sitting at the shore I am thinking who is more helpless, the shore which cannot walk or the waves which cannot stop)
The first day at office for Naina was not so good, she was pulled immediately to look into the production issue because of the latest delivery, the onsite client team was not at all friendly. Pooja explained to Naina "As most of the work is done in India many have lost their jobs . " Naina could understand how it is to be betrayed by someone whom you trust. These employees had trusted the company and had worked for a long time and suddenly they were asked to leave. Even though the compensation was paid , some people who had the passion to work felt emptiness in their lives.
The work load was so much ,she could not breathe for a second but she was happy. The challenging and not so friendly environment helped to divert her thoughts from Sameer at-least during working hours. Days passed and she could win the confidence of customer and her technical expertise helped the team to grow in India.
Tumhare begair yeh waqt, yeh din aur yeh raat
Guzar to jatate hain lekin Guzare nahi jaate
( Without you the time, the day and the night pass but can't be lived )
A month had passed but Sameer had not got the break he was looking for. Every day he would push himself with a new hope. The encouraging words of Naina still fresh in his memories gave him the strength to face the new hurdles
Agar paana hai manzil toh
Apna rehnuma khud bano
Woh aksar bhatak jaate hain
Jinhein sahara nahi milta.
(You have to be your own guide to achieve your goals, those who seek support often go astray )
" Chalna is saturday ghumne chaltein hai, tera kaam bhi ab thoda thik hai",Pooja requested. Past few weeks had taken a toll on Naina and abreak would definitely would refresh her mind.
" Lake Blausee " chale?. They say its very romantic and pretty forest lake of an intensely blue colour which gives it the name ,Blue Lake. We can hike from the train station Kandersteg to Blausee in about 1 hour and 15 minutes. It is a scenic hike . " Naina suggested
"Wah ! tere pass to bahut information hai ? Kya baat hai Honeymoon plan kiya tha kya idhar ?? Pooja teased her " . She just smiled and said ek dost ne bataya tha .
They started early morning and as decided to take the hiking route. It was a pleasurable journey and they enjoyed their first hiking experience listening to Bollywood songs on the way. A paved path lead from the gift shop to the entrance down to the lake through a thick forest. Quickly, the striking blue lake appeared. Pooja and Naina both were awestruck at the beauty. The small lake really more a pond sat in the middle of a beautiful 22-acre nature park .The trail meanders between towering pine trees, thick bushes and boulders covered in moss. " If you believe in fairies, this is definitely the place to meet them." was what Sameer had mentioned and so true it was.
Naina sat on one of the stone watching it. The lake was so clear that she could see tree trunks and rocks at the bottom of the lake. " Pata hai ek kahani judi hai is lake se , Once upon a time, this little lake in the Kander Valley looked just like any other alpine lake. A maid lived close by and she fell in love with a shepherd. They would row out onto the lake to find some alone time in the bright and romantic moonlit nights. One day the Shepherd fell off a cliff and died. The inconsolable maid mourned her loss and one morning they found her drowned in the lake.On that day the lake had mysteriously changed its color to the intense deep blue shade of the eyes of the tragically enamored maid." was what Sameer had explained. "Wasn't the story so similar to her ? Here she was mourning her failure in love and that was the reason why Naina had desired to see this lake.
" Bahut andar tak Dard deti hai
woh khamooshiyan jo bayan nahi hoti "
( The silence which can't be spoken hurts deeply )
" Dekh rahe ho Sameer , pyar ne ek aam si lake ko itna khoobsurat bana diya, hamara pyar bhi aise hi hamari zindagi ko khoobsurat bana sakta tha, kyun chodke chale gaye? " She kept thinking looking at the lake.
"Mere baare mein hi soch rahi thi na", he asked tugging a strand of her hair behind her ear while the song " Tu is tarah se meri zindagi mein shamil hai , jahan bhi jaoun lagta hai teri mehfil hai " played in the background.
" I miss you a lot Sameer , yeh tanhai bahut satati hai " she cried looking at him.
"Naina !! idhar aa jaa Pizza milta hai bahut bhook lagi hai " Pooja shouted from the far end .
Naina looked around searching for Sameer, wasn't he just sitting next to her. With a longing heart she said
" Chu jaate ho mujhe kitni dafaa tum yun hi khwab banke
Kaun kehta hai ki dur reh kar mulakat nahi hoti "
( You touch me many times like dreams , who says we can't meet if we are far)
On the other side of the world , already the moon was up, a full moon bathing everything in a pale blue light. "Yeh khoobsurat poonam ki raat aur tumhari yaadein bas yahi hai mere pass " he said looking at the photo.
"Tum bilkul Chaand ki tarah ho
Noor bhi utna ,Guroor bhi uthna aur mujhse dur bhi uthna "
( You are just like moon, bright, proud and far from me)
"I Miss you Naina , Miss you sooooo much. Bahut jald saath honge aur phir kabhi juda nahi honge " holding the photo close to his heart and with hope he drifted to sleep.
