NEXT DAY, "HOLIKA DEHAN" (Burning of Holika)
Location: Verandah at Pandey residence (Madhuban)
As was the informal said rule since past 14yrs., festival of "Holi" was celebrated by Khuranas and Pandeys together at Pandey's home, 'Madhuban'. Hence, Thakur Harshvardhan and Thakurain Savitri Devi had arrived early morning for the first prayers of the day. Ram and Vaidehi were to soon follow with Maan and Vicky. As it was an auspicious day, Thakur Vidyasagar and Thakur Harshvardhan decided to do another ceremony of Meera and Vicky's wedding. It was decided that today Meera's "lagan patrika" (formal invitation) will be sent to Khurana Mansions so that Khurana family are formally invited to come and marry Meera. Later in the evening "Holika Dehan" will be performed.
Half an hour later, from Khuranas side Ram, Vaidehi, Maan and Vicky arrived. From Meera's side Krishankant, Vasundhara and Meera arrived thereby starting the prayers. Being the younger ones in the family Rudra and Geet were running about on panditji's orders! Maan was smitten seeing his Mishty in white and pink anarkali with churidaar
her long semi damp and beautiful hair loosely braided.
Once the prayer was over Geet was serving everyone prasad. Just before she was to serve Maan and Vicky, Sushma Rani (Naniji) said that as Meera is the "dulhan" she should serve the prasad. Everyone was delighted with this suggestion except one person whose anger was about to hit the roof.
Next Meera's "lagan patrika" was written.
During writing of "lagan patrika", Geet and Sushma Rani (for sometime) were missing. There were only immediate family of Meera, Khuranas and Pandeys for lunch. Hence, Pandey's had organised traditional U.P. style lunch predominantly made by Geet as Sushma Rani was unable to cook since she could not stand for long time.
"Waah, abb Geetali ke haath ka banna hua badhiye khaana milega. Beidhmi aloo!" (Excellent now we will get to eat delicious food cooked by Geetali. "Beidhmi aloo" (poori stuffed with dal) & curry potato.) Thakur Harshvardhan said with excitement and his mouth watering.
"Thakur sahaab, aap aaj badparhezi nahi karenge. Har Holi par aap zyada khaa lete hain phir doctoron ke chakkar lagane padhte hain." (Listen you will eat with care as every Holi you overeat and then we have to run to doctors again and again.) Savitri Devi reprimanded her husband.
"Magar..." (But...)
"Savitriji, aap chinta naa karen! Abhi halka khaana banna hai. Shaam ko pakka khaana (fried) bannega." (Savitriji, don't worry! Lunch is light today, fried food will only be made for dinner at "Holika Dehan" (Burning of Holika) .)
Once everyone had lunch and were relaxing, Vicky asked Savitri Devi, "Dadimaa, yeh "Holika Dehan" (Burning of Holika) kya hai?" (Dadimaa, what does this "Burning of Holika" mean?)
"Vicky, tum itne saalon se yahaan Madhuban (Pandey residence) "Holika Dehan" ke liye aa rahe ho aur tumhei iske baare mein koi jaankaari nahi hai?" (What is this Vicky? Every year you come to Madhuban for this festival of "Burning of Holika" and you still are not aware of the story behind it!)
"Nahi Dadimaa. Har saal jab tak mai aata hoon, Bonfire shuru ho jaati hai." (No Dadimaa. Because each year by the time I arrive, the bonfire has already started.)
"Kyunki tum hamesha late aate ho." (That is because every year you arrive late!) Ram stated the fact.
"Kahani toh mujhe bhi poori yaad nahi." (Unfortunately I also do not remember the full story.) Just then Savitri Devi saw Geet passing by and said, "Geetali beta, kya tum hum sabko "Holika Dehan" ki kahani sunnaogi?" (Geetali dear, can you please narrate to us the whole story of "Burning of Holika"?)
"Hum...?" (Me...?)
"Haan Gudiya, sunna de betiya." (Yes my dear. Please narrate the story.) Sushma Rani also insisted.
Geet sat next to Savitri Devi and started narrating. "Yeh hazaron varsh poorv ki katha hai. Do adhrami aur durachari daitye (demon) bhai the, Hiranyaksh aur Hiranyakashipu. Unn dono ke atyachaar se poori shrishti mein haa-haa kaar mach raha thaa. Jab Hiranyaksh ne adharm ki ati kar di toh Bhagwaan Vishnu ne Hiranyaksh ka sanghaar kar diya.
(Lord Vishnu)
Apne bhai ki mrityu se Hiranyakashipu gusse mein pagal ho gaya aur Bhagwaan Vishnu ke naam se grihna karne laga. Hiranyakashipu ne bahut kadi tapasya ki aur Bhramaji se vardaan manga ki "Meri (Hiranyakashipu) mrityu naa toh din mein ho aur naa raat mein; naa ghar ke andar ho naa ghar ke bahaar; naa aakash mein ho aur naa hi dhara evam pataal mein ho; naa kissi astra (gadget) se ho naa kissi shashtra (weapon) se; aur naa hi woh kissi devta, danav, manav athva pashu ke dwara ho!" Brahmaji usse yeh vardaann de kar adarshiye ho gaye. Kyunki aisa durlabh praani iss sansaar mein kabhi nahi hua thaa, iss kaaran Hiranyakashipu swayam ko "amar" (immortal) samajhne laga." (This happened thousand of years back. There were two immoral, arrogant, callous and ruthless demons, Hiranyaksh and Hiranyakashipu. The innumerable heinous deeds of the two demons was causing destruction and catastrophe in the whole universe. When Hiranyaksh deeds reached a level where even Gods' couldn't tolerate it, Lord Vishnu (Protector of the Universe) appeared and killed Hiranyaksh. Coming to know of his brother's death, Hiranyakashipu was mad with anger and vowed to revenge his brother's death from Lord Vishnu. Hiranyakashipu started doing a penance to please Lord Brahma (Creator of the Universe). Seeing his penance, Lord Brahma was pleased and agreed to give him a boon. Hiranyakashipu asked Lord Brahma, "O Holy one! Please grant me a boon that I cannot be killed in day or night; I cannot be killed inside or outside my palace; I cannot be killed in sky, earth or below earth (netherland); I cannot be killed by any gadget or weapon; and I cannot be killed by God, demon, human or animal!" Lord Brahma granted Hiranyakashipu the boon and disappeared. As there was no creature in the universe who was neither a God, demon, human or animal, Hiranyakashipu started considering himself immortal.)
"How can this be that Hiranyakashipu can only be killed when there is neither day nor night; neither inside nor outside house; neither by any gadget nor by any weapon, neither in sky, earth nor under the earth and neither by god, demon, man or animal."
"Vikram beta, aap poorn katha sunniye aap sab samajh jaayenge." (Vikram, please hear the full story, you will get answer to your questions.) Sushma Rani adviced.
"Hiranyakashipu swayam ko "amar" (immortal) samajhne laga aur usne swarglok, prithvilok aur pataal lok ko apne aadheen banna liya. Bhagwaan Vishnu ko Hiranyakashipu apna pratidwandhi (rival) evam shatru (enemy) samajhta thaa iss liye Hiranyakashipu ne Bhagwaan Vishnu ki puja-archana swarglok, prithvilok evam pataal lok mein varjit kar di. Hiranyakashipu ne Devtaon, Danavon aur Maanavon se kaha ki abb woh hi unka "Bhagwan" hain aur kewal uski hi ek Bhagwan ki tehra puja-archana ho. Devta aur maanav ne Bhagwaan Vishnu se prarthana ki
aur Bhagwaan Vishnu ne Hiranyakashipu ke ghar apna ek bhakth, Hiranyakashipu ke bete "Prahlad" ke roop mein janma." (Hiranyakashipu started considering himself immortal, and captured heavens, earth and below earth (netherland). As Hiranyakashipu considered Lord Vishnu as his rival-cum-enemy he forbade anyone in heavens, earth and below earth (netherland) to worship Lord Vishnu. Hiranyakashipu told the Gods, Humans and Demons that from now onwards Hiranyakashipu is their "GOD" not Lord Vishnu so they should worship him. Gods and Humans worshipped Lord Vishnu in secrecy and asked him to rescue them from Hiranyakashipu's terror. Lord Vishnu listened to their plea and sent his great devotee as Hiranyakashipu's son, Prahlad.) Geet paused to have a drink of water.
"Phir?" (Then?) A masculine deep baritone voice asked surprising everyone as Maan was sitting some distance away from both families clearing his e-mails on his phone.
"Bachpan se hi Prahlad, Bhagwaan Vishnu ka ananya bhakht thaa. Hiranyakashipu ne har prakaar se Prahlad ko Bhagwaan Vishnu ki bhakhti chodne ke liye samjhaya, pyaar se, lobh se, krodh se yahaan tak ki mrityu ke bhay se bhi magar kuch nahi hua. Hiranyakashipu ne Prahlad ko pahadi se giraya; Prahlad ko vish pilaya; haathi ke pairon tale kuchla aur Prahlad ke palang mein keelein bhi lagaaeen magar Prahlad ki Bhagwaan Vishnu ke prati bhakhti mein koi parivartan nahi aaya. Ek din "Holika" yaani Prahlad ki bua, apne bhai Hiranyakashipu se milne aayi. Apne bhai hi samasya jaan kar usne kaha ki "Bhaiya, mujhe vardhan hai ki agni mujhe chhu bhi nahi sakti. Iss liye mai Prahlad ko lekar chittah par beithoongi." Phir wohi hua jo abhi tak ho raha thaa. Prahlad ki Bhagwaan Vishnu ke prati bhakhti ki vijay hui aur "Holika" uss chittah mein jaal kar bhasm ho gayi. Iss liye har saal 'Holika Dehan' (Burning of Holika) ka din hummein yeh baat yaad dilata hai ki burai kitni bhi shaktishaali kyun naa ho kintu bhakti evam acchai par vijay nahi paa sakti ." (From childhood, Prahlad was a profound devotee of Lord Vishnu. Hiranyakashipu tried by all means i.e. love, anger, punishment, bribe even fear of death to make Prahlad give up his devotion to Lord Vishnu. But Prahlad refused deviate from path of devotion. Hiranyakashipu got Prahlad dropped from a cliff but he was saved; then Hiranyakashipu poisoned Prahlad but he was saved; Hiranyakashipu got Prahlad trampled under elephants' feet but again he was saved; finally Hiranyakashipu put nails on Prahlad's bed but Prahlad didn't even get a scratch. Prahlad's devotion for Lord Vishnu only increased day by day. One day 'Holika', Hiranyakashipu's sister came to meet him. Hearing about her brother's delima she said, "Don't worry brother! I have a boon from Lord Brahma that fire can't burn me. Therefore tomorrow I will sit on flaming pyre with Prahlad, where nothing will happen to me but Prahlad will be incinerated to ashes." But again by God's Grace, Prahlad was saved and Holika was turned to ashes. Therefore every year since that day "Holika Dehan" (Burning of Holika) is celebrated to remind us of the victory of good over evil. No matter how powerul evil is but victory will always be of truth and goodness!)
