Later in the night after dinner, Maan went to Geet's room via parapet. Maan closed Geet's balcony door and curtains. Then he lay on Geet's bed waiting for his Mishty. As soon as Maan heard Geet coming, he hid behind her door. Geet came inside her room, sniffed saying, "Yeh khushboo kaisi hai?" (What is this odour?). Geet sniffed again and said, "Suniye, kya aap yahaan hain?" (Listen, are you here?) Getting no response, Geet tapped her head at her over active imagination,
gathered her night dress, switched on the music and left for the washroom. Once Maan was sure that Geet is alone he locked the bedroom door from inside while Geet was in washroom changing. Geet came out of the washroom and was startled to see Maan lying on her bed. "Aap yahaan? Aapki tabiyat toh theek hai?" (You? I hope you are alright?) Geet asked worried and concerned touching Maan's forehead.
"Tumhei usse kya? Tum toh apni shaadi rachaane mein busy ho." (How does that concern you? You are only busy in getting married.) Maan said in a displeased voice removing Geet's hand from his forehead.
"Nahi aisi baat nahi hai." (No this is not true.)
"Toh kya baat hai? Bachpan mein tum mujhse sab battein share karti theen, aur abb itni badi baat ki Dev Singh Rathore tumhei molest karna chahta thaa tumne mujhse chuppai. Tum mujhe apna "pati" toh samajhti nahi abb "dost" bhi nahi samajhti." (Then what's the problem? In childhood you use to share everything with me and now you are not even willing to share such a big thing i.e. Dev Singh Rathore's disgusting behaviour of trying to molest you. I know you don't consider me as your "husband" but I thought that at least you will consider me as your "friend".)
"Nahi aap humare liye iss sansaar mein sabse zaroori hain. Aap humare liye Rajveer bhai-sa, Rudra bhai-sa, Nanaji aur Naniji se bhi pehle aate hain." (No you are the most important for me in this world. You are even more important for me than Rajveer bhai-sa, Rudra bhai-sa, Nanaji and Naniji.)
"Tum jhoot bol rahi ho. Kyunki agar mai tumhari liye itna hi important hoon jitna tum keh rahi ho, toh tum mujhe battati ki kyun tumhei yeh lagta hai ki tum "apavitr" ho?" (You are lying. If you really consider me as important as you say, then why are you not telling me why you consider yourself "impure" and "unworthy" of me.) Seeing Geet quite and fiddling with her dupatta, after 15mins. of waiting, Maan said, "Theek hai mai abb jaa raha hoon aur phir kabhi nahi aaonga." (Alright I'm leaving now and will never come to meet you again.) Maan said getting off Geet's bed.
Geet started talking in emotionless voice, "Rathore uncle ne hummein uss Dev se choodha toh liya, magar hum uski woh ajeeb si aur darawani nazar ko aaj tak nahi bhoole. Nanaji hummein pehle haspataal le gaye kyunki hum bahut darre huye the aur roye jaa rahe the. Doctors ne humare kuch tests kiye aur hummein examine bhi kiya phir hum wapis ghar aa gaye. Uss din hum bahut darr gaye the aur humare ghar mein koi stree bhi nahi thee. Naniji ki halat toh aap jaante hi hain kaisi thee. Iss liye Dadimaa aur Maa humare ghar aayeen aur hummein apne saath Khurana Mansion le gayeen. Wahaan hum ek mahine tak rahe. Aapki Maa (Vaidehi) ne hummein ek sagi (biolgical) Maa se badh kar pyaar diya. Baba (Ram) ne pitah ki tehre humari raksha ki aur Vicky bhaiya ne hummare saath ek sage (biolgical) bhai ki tehre hassi-thitholi ki. Aaj agar hum haste-khelte insaan hai toh kewal Dadimaa, Baba, Maa aur Vicky bhaiya ki wajeh se hain. Ek mahine baad hum wapis apne ghar chale gaye magar phir bhi har raat sone ke liye hum Maa ke paas aate the." (Although Rathore uncle saved me from that vile Dev but I cannot forget the way his lustful and disgusting eyes looked at me. As I was extremely scared and crying continously, Nanaji first took me to the hospital. Doctors did my few tests; examined me and let me return home. That day I was extremely scared besides there was no woman in my home. How was Naniji's condition was, you have seen. Dadimaa and Maa came and took me with them to Khurana Mansion, where I stayed for a month. Your mother (Vaidehi) looked after me as if I was her biological daughter with lot of love, care and understanding. Baba (Ram) gave me protection like a father, whereas Vicky bhaiya played and teased me like he was my biological brother. Today if I'm a healthy and complete individual its only because of Dadimaa, Baba, Maa and Vicky bhaiya's love, care and protection. After a month of the incident, I went home but would still come every night to sleep with Maa.) Geet paused going back to her pleasant not so pleasant childhood memories.
"Phir?" (Then?)
"Do saal baad, jab hum chhe (6) saal ke the aur aap chhuttiyon mein ghar aanewale the, Nanaji ne hummein raat ko aapke ghar par rehne ke liye manna kar diya. Chaar saal beet gaye aur hum abb dus (10) saal ke the. Garmiyon ki chutti par hum Mussorie se Delhi aaye the, iss liye raat ko Dulari kaki (maid) humare saath soteen theen. Ek raat hum der raat ko jaag gaye kyunki hummein pyaas lag rahi thee. Humne Dulari kaki ko Bhola kaka (servant of Pandey household) se baat karte sunna ki "agar ek kunwari kanya ko koi purush chhu le jo uska pati naa ho toh woh "apavitr" ho jaati hai. Jaise Geet betiya ho gayi hai."Iss liye hum..." (After two (2) years, when I was 6years old and you were going to return home for summer vacations, Nanaji stopped my even spending the night at Khurana Mansion. Four years later when I was ten years old, I had come to Delhi from Mussoorie for my summer vacations and Dulari Kaki would sleep in my room at night. It was one such night when I woke up in the middle of the night as I was thirsty. I overheard Dulari kaki talking to Bhola kaka (servant of Pandey household) "If an unmarried girl is touched by another man who isn't her husband she becomes 'impure'. Just like Geet baby is." That's why I...)
"WHAT RUBBISH? Being an educated girl, you believe in all that illiterate nonsense."
"I know that you feel its an illiterate nonsense but I don't. Humara rishta humesha se "paak aur pavitr" thaa aur hai. Magar yeh bhi sacchi baat hai ki ek gair purush jo humara pati nahi thaa usne hummein chhua hai." (I know that you feel its an illiterate nonsense but I don't. Your and my relation has always been and is till now innocent and pure. But this is also true that a man who was not my husband has touched me.)
"Geet tum abhi bhi "pavitr" ho. Aur yeh mai tumhei humari suhaag-raat par battaonga." (Geet you are still "pure" which I'll show you on our first wedding night (suhaag-raat).)
"SUHAAG RAAT? Humne aapse kaha hai naa ki hum aapse vivaah nahi kar sakte, toh aap zidd kyun kar rahe hain?" (FIRST WEDDING NIGHT? I have told you that this cannot happen then why are you being so stubborn?)
Maan tried explaining to Geet by logic, by love, by emotional blackmail, by being annoyed but when nothing worked, Maan lost his patience and said, "Theek hai tumne apna decision batta diya, abb mai tumhei phir kabhi propose nahi karoonga. DO DIN BAAD TUM MERA DECISION DEKHOGI!" (Fine, you have told me your decision, now I will never propose to you. BUT AFTER TWO DAYS YOU WILL SEE MY DECISION!)
Maan thundered and walked out in anger with long strides crossing Geet's balcony, parapet and reaching his bedroom's balcony. Geet was shaking in her room as she had never seen Maan or her "Maanu"this angry before.
Next day was Sunday, Pandey family was about to start their breakfast when Maan entered Madhuban (Pandey residence). Thakur Vidyasagar and Sushma Rani were first shocked then ecstatic on seeing their future son-in-law walk in their home. Thakur Vidyasagar asked his wife to organise breakfast for Maan and call all his grandchildren. Maan paid his respect to Thakur Vidyasagar. Once Rajveer, Rudra and Geet were there, Maan said humbly with folded hands, "Nanaji aur Naniji, mai maafi chahta hoon ki chuttiwale din maine aap sabko nashte ke time disturb kiya." (Nanaji and Naniji, sorry for disturbing your weekend breakfast.)
"Nahi beta, tum bhi humare saath nashta karo." (Not at all come have breakfast with us.) Sushma Rani lovingly invited Maan.
"Nashta magar..." (Breakfast but...)
"Beta chinta matt karo. Gudiya ko vilayati khaana banna aata hai." (Don't worry, Gudiya knows how to make Continental dishes.) Sushma Rani insisted.
"Yes Maan, Geet can make Continental cuisine. What would you like to have?" Rajveer asked
"Chili Cheese Toast." Maan said ignoring Geet but looking at Geet's reflection on the mirror.
"Perfect, Gudiya mai bhi Maan bhai ki tehre aaj Chili Cheese Toast khaaunga. Paranthe khate-khate bore ho gaya hoon." (Perfect, Gudiya I'll also have Chili Cheese Toast with Maan bhai as I'm sick and tired of having paranthas everyday.) Rudra also supported Maan.
Hence, Geet left for kitchen along with Sushma Rani. Half an hour later, everyone was sitting on the dinning table having breakfast. Maan was enjoying his black coffee and breakfast made by his wife but was pretending to ignore her. Once breakfast was over, Maan said politely, "Nanaji aur Naniji, aaj aap sabke saath nashta karke bachpan ki yaadein taaza ho gayeen. Magar jaane se pehle mujhe aap dono ki ijazzat chahiye." (Nanaji and Naniji, thank you for a delicious breakfast and it also brought back my childhood memories. But before I leave, I need your permission.)
"Kaisi ijazzat beta?" (Permission for what my son?) Thakur Vidyasagar asked.
"Nanaji, yeh kuch office ke kaagaz hain jinn par Miss Singhania ke signatures chahiye." (Nanaji, these are official papers on which I need Miss Singhania's signatures.) Maan said forwarding a file full of papers.
"Haan, haan kyun nahi beta. Gudiya, hastakshar kar de betiya." (Yes, yes why not? Gudiya pleaase sign the papers.) Sushma Rani pushed Geet forward, handing her a pen.
"Mai sign karne se pehle padhna chahti hoon." (I will only sign after reading them.) Geet said suspiciously looking at Maan.
"Sure. Go ahead." Maan said in a relaxed and complacent manner sipping his black coffee.
Thakur Vidyasagar and Thakurain Sushma Rani were furious at Geet's disrespectful behaviour towards Maan but Geet was adamant. Geet was used to Maan's temper and possessiveness as both Geet and Geet's inner being had accepted Maan's "haq" (right) on Geet. But what scared Geet most in Maan's personality was that when he behaved in a relaxed and complacent manner, as this behaviour often lead to destruction!
Geet took time reading the documents scrutinising each word and legal language and also questioning Maan if it was not clear, making Thakur Vidyasagar and Sushma Rani indignant and humiliated. Geet finally finished reading all the documents as they were mainly regarding employees stock shares in KC, PF guidelines etc. and signed them handing the file back to Maan.
Maan went through all the documents and said in a professional voice, "Miss Singhania, you forgot to sign one page."
"Gudiya, abb bass hastakshar kar dein sab kagaz toh tunne pehle hi padh liye hain." (Gudiya, now just sign as you have already read all the papers in detail.) Thakur Vidyasagar ordered thereby forcing Geet to sign the document without reading it.
