If Asin can be called successful with her 2.5 Blockbusters, then Amrita also had a few superhits and BBs, mainly with Shahid. In MHN also she had quite a central role.
Amrita could not succeed because she refused to compromise or wear revealing clothes, do sexy dances etc. Actually she was correct to refuse all that since bold roles, revealing outfits would not even suit her, she had typical girl next door looks which would not suit in item songs.
Actually Amrita would do better in these current BW films which have more simple, slice of life stories, small town setting etc.
Asin was much popular than Amrita though pallavi-ji.Unlike Amrita, Asin actually enjoyed a male following.
Amrita's biggest "thing" was the she was the girl who looked best with Shahid. Other than that, she didn't had anything going for her.
Also if you agree that Amrita didn't succeed because of her choices, why than blame the industry and nepotism/her being outsider for it.
Vidya Balan, who would have thought she could perfectly play the sex siren of the 1970s and 1980s, but she did and did so brilliantly that TDP won her both acclaim and box office success.
That is risk taking, that is talent.
And Amrita was cocky about how she is sati-savitri.
Although later on when grass was not green, she had to do all things she didn't like doing in Short Kut i.e. wearing skimpy clothes and doing racy dance numbers.
