Nirma Aunty?

Whatever you do, never call Nirma "aunty" or else she I'll turn the other cheek sooner than you can bat your eyelids! Te valuable lesson was learnt the hard way by a group of Nirma's fans who recently visited her on the sets of an under production movie. Spilling the juicy details, our mole told about the visitors among whom were the parents of an adorable little girl who wanted to have her picture taken the glamorous star. And when the time came for the snap it was Nirma 's temper that did the snapping on hearing the girl's parents tell their daughter to stand with Nirma "Aunty" for the pictures. All huffed up, Nirma stomped out of the studios in a fit of rag, leaving everyone baffled.

Inzamam banned for four ODIs

LONDON: After a two-day disciplinary hearing presided over by ICC chief match referee Ranjan Madugalle, the International Cricket Council (ICC) announced that Pakistan cricket captain Inzamamul Haq would be banned for four one-day internationals. Inzamam was cleared of ball tampering, but was found guilty of bringing the game into disrepute over his side's refusal to play during last month's fourth test match against England. The sanction is considerably less severe than the maximum ban Inzamam could have received, which would have ruled him out for up to four test matches and eight one dayers. Inzamam has 24 hours to appeal, but he indicated he would accept his punishment, which effectively rules him out of next month's Champions Trophy in India. Inzamam was punished for his role in Pakistan's unprecedented forfeit of the fourth test match against England last month. Pakistan twice refused to take the field after tea on the fourth day of the match. The Pakistani team did so in protest at umpires Darrell Hair and Billy Doctrove's decision to penalise five runs for ball tampering. England was awarded a win because of the Pakistani team's stand. Earlier in a statement, Madugalle said, "On the first charge of ball tampered, I find Inzamam not guilty. I am not satisfied on the balance of probabilities that there is sufficiently cogent evidence the fielding team had changed the condition of the ball." He made it clear that it was Pakistan's failure to resume play that had been the reason behind Inzamam's ban. "He has been found guilty of twice deliberately refusing to come onto the field," he added. afp

Amina Haq

It has not been too long since Aaminah started modelling but one loses count as she names the magazines she has been printed in: She, Libas, Visage, Women's Own, Fashion Collection, Newsline. Then there have been catwalk experiences. No wonder then that she can afford to choose in terms of money and commitments. Designers are now ready to pay more to models who work with greater professionalism. "Its nice to be recognised" as she says. "It would be hard for me to uproot myself and move elsewhere because my family is here, my friends are here, my work is here, my identity is here. Whatever and whoever I am, the recognition is all because of Pakistan. Abroad I would just be another statistic." Aaminah's identity is glowing and growing on the Lahore fashion scene, because she has been the opening model in so many shows. Aaminah's latest ventures to date include TV plays starting with Nusrat Thakhur which was aired in mid Dec 1997. Adding to her portfolio was a Commercial for Star TV (Chen One). The signature model for Nilofer Shahid's "Chaughtai Collection" which she took to Paris, appeared in Canada in the Fashion TV ad and also appeared in the french Cosmopolitan alongside an interview and shoot. Aaminah is as seriously into the profession as one can be in a place like Lahore. "I feel a model has to create a difference between being a clothes horse and a person showing off the designers product with elegance. A pout and a pretty face does not make a model out of a girl." Then what does? "You have to be careful of certain things. I make it a point to get a good night's sleep before a shoot or a show. I drink plenty of water and pay alot of attention to personal grooming. After all you can be only there for as long as you are capable of doing something dramatic to a designer dress."

SHE was a simple city girl, who one day said playfully to her friends "I will become a superstar one day." Of course, she didn't even believed in what she had said. Call it destiny or whatever, but superstar she did become after a few years. Still in her teens, Reema got her first taste of fame when she made a debut in Javed Fazil's movie Bulandi, opposite Shaan.

A teachers' pet, Reema participated in all her school and college functions. However, at home she says that she was an altogether different person and was fond of solitude. "My mother used to ask me why didn't I participated in family functions like other girls," she reveals with a laughter. She confesses that she didn't do well in studies in her early school days. "I was made to sit with students who were below average, I used to feel ashamed. But then I thought that I have to put an end to it and prove myself as a bright student," she narrates. And that, she says, is what she eventually did.

Although pretty pleased with her career and enjoying the popularity and respect she gained from it, the film star does not find acting a suitable career option for girls. "They should sign a movie only when they are sure that they will be working with good directors and in a comfortable environment," Reema says, sounding serious and concerned.

She reveals about her early years in this field, "Initially I was quite gullible. The only thing that mattered at that time was having a large number of films under one's belt. Over a period of time, I realized that it's not the number of movies that count eventually, but, in fact, the quality of your work that pays off," the actor says in a single breath. Probably this realization made her stop acting in the run-of-the-mill type movies. She has given her career a new twist and landed in the territory of the directors with the release of her debut directorial venture Koi Tuj sa Kahan.

Reema also claims that she is one of the three highest paid models of the country. Her contract amount is, according to her, the highest among the female models.

Talking about music, she says, "Music is a gift of God. It is amazing how it has multiple effects on one's mood. It brings tranquillity and calmness, and when you are in a mood to party you can switch to some hip tunes and it will lift you up high. And if one is down and blue, then you can tune on some mellow tracks.

Reema's favourite Western singers happen to be Celine Dion, Marriah Carriah and Whitney Houston. But when she is in a mood to party and dance, she chooses some of the upbeat numbers by Jennifer Lopez and Madonna. Among the Indian singers, she simply adores the songs by Lata, Rafi and Mukesh. As for the younger lot, she enjoys the numbers by Sonu Nigham and Alka Yagnik.

Among our local singers, Reema terms Madam Noor Jehan and Mehdi Hasan as matchless. And she is of the opinion that the problem with the younger bunch in the music field here is that it is hard to differentiate between them. "They all sound the same," is how she sums up the matter.

Reema is not particular about movies, however, horror movies doesn't appeal to her at all. She claims to have watched almost all the movies of Jackie Chan and Van Damme (whom she met personally). But when it comes to naming her favourite actor, she mentions Sean Connery and Denzel Washington as the ones who have left a deep impression on her. "I have also seen all the movies starring Julia Roberts, and I do like Cameron Diaz she is natural on screen and I think she copies Julia Roberts while acting," expresses the actor.

Talking about her dream role she declares Rani Mukherji's character in Black or a role similar to it as the one she would love to do. "I would prefer to do a role which challenges me as an actor," enthuses Reema. "There is one more role that fascinates me and that is the one performed by Vijantimala in Amar Pali. She portrayed a classical dancer and looked bewitchingly beautiful in it," she adds after a pause.

Among the Bollywood female actresses she admires Nargis, Madhubala, Madhuri Dixit and Aishwarya Rai. About Rai, Reema says that she doesn't show those mechanical and artificial expressions while performing in a movie that are the trademark of models-turned-actresses. In fact, she thinks that over the period of time, Rai has improved much more than her colleagues. On being asked if she would opt for acting in an Indian movie, pat comes the reply, "Only if it's a joint venture." However, she does aspires to win herself an Oscar, for direction and performance both. As they say that nothing is impossible, so let's keep our fingers cross for it.

When inquired about not mentioning the names of any Pakistani actors she retorts, "You didn't ask me to name any". After what seemed like an afterthought, she mentions Waheed Murad, Nadeem, Babur Ali and Moammar Rana, and for the female counterparts she says Sabiha Khanum, Rani, Aasia and Neelo are the best ones.

Two of her all-time favourite movies are Braveheart and Gladiator. What is even more interesting is the fact that she decided to become a director when she saw the former in a cinema house abroad.

Reema has little to say about books, though she loves to read a lot. "I used to read in my school days all the popular series among the children of that time, such as Inspector Jamshed Series, Imran Series and Secret Seven," Reema reveals. Bano Qudsia (especially for her novel Raja Gidh) and Ishfaq Ahmed turn out to be her favourite novelists. Whereas Nicholas Path is the one whom she admires among the Western authors for his book The Notebook.

She is quite into the spiritual reading and, therefore, reads a lot about the life of the Holy Prophet (P.B.U.H.) and a good number of dua and wazaaif. She claims to have had a flair for history in school but can't remember any book that she has read on the subject except studying it in school. For her, poetry is something that is very close to her heart. Among the poets whose work she likes to read are Ahmed Faraz and Parveen Shakir.

Flintoff all praise for Pietersen

Sunday, October 29, 2006

Source: PTI

Ahmedabad: England captain Andrew Flintoff today attributed his side's thrilling three-wicket win over West Indies to a classy unbeaten knock from Kevin Pietersen and said that the success would help his side "develop" ahead of the coming battles including the Ashes.

"It was an important game for the team. West Indies were the in-form side. We wanted somebody to take the responsibility and win the game for us. And Kevin did it with class," Flintoff said at the post-match media meet here.

"Pietersen was fantastic. He steadied the ship after we had a bit of a wobble in the middle. He paced the innings well," Flintoff said after England won a consolation victory in the Champions Trophy after having gone out of reckoning following back-to-back losses in the first two games.

"He is a fine player. And if he continues to bat like this, the team will be stronger," he said.

Flintoff said that the draw also helped his team salvage some pride after their pathetic show in the earlier matches. "The team's pride was at stake today. We have done well to win".

West Indies captain Brian Lara traced the cause for his side's loss to his bowlers' inability to contain the English top order and his batsmen's failure to put up 10-15 runs more after a solid start.

"In the first 15 overs, we allowed England a lot of runs. We let them get too much free hits. And I feel that we fell probably 10-15 runs short of what we should have got," he said.
