Inzamam concerned about his loss of form

Monday, November 27, 2006

Karachi: Pakistan captain Inzamam-ul-Haq has said he was "very much concerned" about his loss of form in their current series against the West Indies.

Inzamam had skipped the Champions Trophy limited overs' tournament owing to a four-ODI ban following the Oval Test forfeiture in August.

He is playing his first series after their tour of England and has so far had forgettable outing with poor scores of 0, 31 and 10 in the Test-series against Brian Lara's team.

"I am very much concerned about my performance but I am very satisfied with the team's showing especially during the Multan Test match," Inzamam was quoted as saying by 'The Nation'.

Inzamam, however, said he was looking for a better performance to make the third and final Test an interesting duel.

"The final Test would also be decisive and there would be interesting contest. By winning the final game I would like to seal the series," he said. Pakistan won the first match at Lahore by nine wickets which the second Test ended in a draw at Multan.

Dropped catches cost us dear: Dravid

Monday, November 27, 2006

Cape Town: Skipper Rahul Dravid on November 27, said the fielders failed to backup a splendid bowling performance, resulting in India's 106-run defeat in the third cricket one-dayer against South Africa here today.

"We did the damage upfront but could not finish it up. Our bowlers did a good job and created opportunities. We got chances but could not hold onto them," Dravid said after the loss at the Newlands stadium which gave the home side an unassailable 2-0 lead in the five match series.

"230-235 would have been a good score to chase. Justin Kemp played a good knock," he said. "We had South Africa in trouble early on in both the matches. We need to keep building on them. We also had some batsman scoring runs. These things are critical for us."

A delighted South African skipper Greame Smith heaped praise on Kemp for raising his maiden century when the team was down in the dumps.

"We were in trouble at 76 for six but Kemp put in a fantastic effort. And then the boys bowled in the right areas," Smith said. "The guys at number 6, 7, 8 had such potential to make the runs," he said. "This is early season for us. We have come up with all-around performance so far," he said.

Man of match Kemp said his idea of playing out the full quota of 50 overs paid him the dividends.
"It was just the case of batting 50 overs and I focussed on that," he said.

4th ODI: RSA post 243/8; Gibbs smashes 93

Wednesday, November 29, 2006

Herschelle Gibbs cracked an unbeaten 93 to help South Africa post 243 for eight in the fourth ODI against India at Port Elizabeth on Wednesday.

Electing to bat first after winning the toss for the third consecutive time, South Africa got off to a poor start with skipper Graeme Smith back in the pavilion with the third ball of the day.

Zaheer Khan trapped him lbw for naught. S Sreesanth, who replaced Harbhajan Singh, then bowled back L Bosman (0) to reduce the home side to six for two after four overs.

Jacques Kallis and Herschelle Gibbs then put on 69 runs before Kumble sent Kallis back with his first ball, caught behind by M S Dhoni for 49.

The leggie struck again in his next over, trapping Abraham de Villiers (13) leg before.

Virender Sehwag got rid of Mark Boucher, lbw for 29.

Last match centurion Justin Kemp was out first ball, caught by Sehwag off a Sachin Tendulkar delivery.

Shaun Pollock (37) put on 61 runs with Gibbs before he was run out by Kumble. Andrew Hall was the last Proteas wicket to fall, run out for 13. He put on 24 runs with Gibbs from 18 deliveries.

Second chance for Jaffer

Virender Sehwag is leading the Indians after Rahul Dravid flew back to India with a finger injury. Wasim Jaffer, who made a forgettable debut in the second one-dayer at Durban, gets another chance in this match.

4th ODI: Lumbering Indians falter again; RSA win by 80 runs

Wednesday, November 29, 2006

Port Elizabeth: South Africa beat India by 80 runs in the fourth one-day international at Port Elizabeth on Wednesday and take an unassailable 3-0 lead in the five-match MTN ODI series.

Chasing 244 to win the match and keep their chances alive in the series, India were bundled out for 163 in 38.1 overs.

Irfan Pathan stood tall among the ruins with a strokeful unbeaten 47. India's second highest scorer was Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who made 26.

For South Africa, Justin Kemp picked up three wickets, while Shaun Pollock and Makhya Ntini picked up two wickets each.

India will next play South Africa in their first international Twenty-20 match on Friday and then the fifth ODI on Sunday at Centurion.

Familiar start

India's chase was a familiar non-starter with the top order failing to negotiate the new ball yet again. Wasim Jaffer, who's debut lasted only three deliveries, replaced and injured Rahul Dravid in this match.

He was caught by Graeme Smith off Ntini for 10. Pollock sent back Sachin Tendulkar for just one, caught behind by Mark Boucher.

India's stand-in skipper Virender Sehwag was the third to go, caught by Loots Bosman off Ntini.

M S Dhoni joined Karthik and smashed the ball to all parts of the park. He made 26 from 21 balls with four boundaries and one six before he was caught by a substitute at third man to give Andre Nel his first wicket of the match.

Ganguly gears up for possible comeback

Wednesday, November 29, 2006

Kolkata: Amidst speculation that he would be included in the India Test team for the South Africa series, Sourav Ganguly had an intense practice session at the Eden Gardens here today.

The former captain had stints with both the bat and the ball along with other members of Bengal team during the net practice session that commenced this morning and stretched past noon.

The elegant left-hander seemed in good form with the willow, unleashing a barrage of delectable shots both off pacers and spinners, as a large media contingent gathered to capture him in action.

Bengal are scheduled to take on Mumbai in a Ranji Trophy Elite Group match from December one. Ganguly, who led Bengal in their tournament opener versus Punjab, has given indications that he desired to relinquish the captaincy as he expected a recall to the national team.

However, there was no official confirmation.

The sporting circles across the country have been speculating on Ganguly's comeback to top-flight cricket in view of the dismal performance by the Rahul Dravid-led squad in South Africa, where the batting has repeatedly failed in the one-day matches.

The Test team for South Africa is slated to be announced tomorrow.

Ganguly last played for India in the Karachi Test against Pakistan earlier this year

After Monty and KP, it's turn of Sajid

Wednesday, November 29, 2006

London: England fast bowler Sajid Mahmood was not a part of the playing eleven in the first Ashes Test but he could not escape racial abuse from Australian spectators in Brisbane.

Sajid has revealed that while he was taking a drink out to an England fielder, a spectator told him: "You can't be English." Writing for his column in 'The Guardian', the Lancashire quick said
: "yes, it is racist, but I can't do anything about it. There's going to be a lot of it. I have to learn to block it out and not let it affect my game." It is the third instance of abuse for the members of English team after spinner Monty Panesar was referred to as 'stupid Indian' and Kevin Pietersen was targetted during the tour match against New South Wales in Sydney.

Sajid's family hails from Pakistan, while Panesar has his roots in India and Pietersen comes from South Africa.

Sajid suspected the varbal attackes could aggravate as the series reaches its peak.

"You're going to get stuff like that out here and you've just got to learn to ignore it. There's no point biting back because there's going to be a lot of it," he said.

"If I get caught up in that sort of stuff my focus and concentration on the game will be taken away. And right now the whole squad needs to focus on one thing and that's getting our grip back on that little urn.

"There's enough to focus on without worrying about abusive crowds," he added

3rd Test: Pakistan eye victory

Thursday, November 30, 2006

Karachi: Master batsman Mohammad Yousuf Thursday broke the 30-year-old world record of most Test runs in a calendar year with his ninth century in 2006 as Pakistan pushed the West Indies into a tight corner in the third and final cricket Test.

Yousuf followed his century in the first innings with another elegant knock of 124 off 195 balls, hitting 15 fours before Pakistan declared its second innings at 399-6 for a mammoth overall lead of 443 runs.

Captain Inzamam-ul-Haq scored his first half century in six Test matches and remained unbeaten on 58 off 91 balls.

West Indies lost its openers to pacemen Umar Gul and Shahid Nazir and wobbled to 39-2 at stumps on the fourth day. Brian Lara holds the West Indies hopes with unbeaten 18 to save the game while Ramnaresh Sarwan was not out on 11 when bad light stopped play 10 overs before scheduled close.

The West Indies holds the record of best ever successful run-chase in test cricket when it scored 418 in beating Australia at St. John's, Antigua in 2002-03 season.

Yousuf drove paceman Corey Collymore to a boundary through mid on to reach 48 before lunch and surpassed Viv Richards' record of 1,710 made by the former West Indies captain in 11 Test matches in 1976.

Yousuf plundered 665 runs in five innings including four centuries in the three Tests against the West Indies to finish 2006 with 1,788 test runs from 11 Test matches.

Yousuf's brilliance overshadowed Mohammad Hafeez's (104) patient seven-hour century and the West Indies bowlers struggled on a slow pitch to get only one wicket.

Sydney umpires to wear black ribbons in Hair's support

Thursday, November 30, 2006

Melbourne: Sydney umpires will wear black ribbons this weekend in support of Darrell Hair, who was sacked by the International Cricket Council as a result of the Oval Test fiasco.

The NSW Cricket Umpires and Scorers Association (NSWCUSA) has pledged to continue showing their support for Hair, a life member and former president of the association, with all umpires at Sydney grade and shire competition matches to wear the ribbons on Saturday, a report in 'The Age' said today.

Earlier this month, the NSWCUSA took out a full page advertisement in newspapers with an open letter criticising the ICC Executive Board for its decision to sack Hair from its elite panel.

A statement from the NSWCUSA said the decision to wear black ribbons was aimed at not just showing support, but also "to express concern at a total lack of respect for the role of the Umpire by the ICC along with a demise in the idea of playing by the laws." The ICC sacked Hair this month in the aftermath of August's controversial Oval Test between England and Pakistan that was forfeited by the tourists after they were deducted five runs by Hair for alleged ball tampering.

Shoaib was twice advised to alter his statement'

Wednesday, November 29, 2006

Karachi: A member of the original drugs inquiry tribunal today expressed surprise at the demand of banned fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar's lawyer for declaring the first hearing a null and void, saying the paceman was twice advised to make necessary changes if he desired.

Shoaib's lawyer Abid Hasan Manto has objected to the damaging observations made on the bowler's lifestyle by the original three-man drug tribunal in their final report after banning the bowler for two years.

The member said tribunal chairman Barrister Shahid Hamid had twice advised Shoaib and his lawyer Noman Niaz during the hearing to go through the statement submitted by the pacer and make necessary changes if they desired.

"Hamid himself was surprised that in his statement to the tribunal, Shoaib had talked about his western lifestyle, sex life and other activities," the member said.

"But Shoaib and Niaz came back twice with the same statement and the tribunal had no alternative but to accept it and when the findings were released Shoaib's statement formed an integral part of the explanation of why the tribunal didn't accept his argument and that he had taken the banned substance inadvertently."

Yousuf commended by former cricketers

Friday, December 01, 2006

Karachi: Former cricket greats lavished praise on senior Pakistan batsman Mohammad Yousuf for breaking the 30-year-old record of West Indian Vivian Richards for most Test runs in a calender year.

Yousuf surpassed Richard's record of 1710 runs scored in 11 matches in 1976 by accumulating 1742 runs at lunch while scoring 124 runs in his 11th Test of the year.

Yousuf had on the first day of the Test broken the record for most hundreds in a year held by Vivian Richards and Aravinda de Silva who scored seven centuries each.

Yousuf, who made 102 on the first day to score his eight hundred of the year, struck his ninth ton this year and his second century of the match today.

The Pakistan Cricket Board immediately announced a cash prize of Rupees one million for Yousuf which would come from sponsors, ARY.

"We are very proud of his feat and it is a red letter day in Pakistan cricket," Chairman Naseem Ashraf said.

Former Indian batsman Sanjay Manjrekar described Yousuf's golden run as phenomenal.

"He is batting like he is in a trance. He is very calm and composed and his mental strength is great," Manjrekar said.

"The biggest change I have seen in Yousuf's batting is that he has increased his mental side of his game. He is batting the best I have seen him bat before," he added.
