Lollywood News

If Bollywood is taking efforts to cement the friendship between India and Pakistan, Lollywood is not far behind. In his attempt to enhance the business and friendship between two nations, Javed Raza, known as Pakistan's showman; has roped in Bollywood hottie Neha Dhupia for an item number in his Pak film, Kabhi Pyar Na Karna. Malaika Arora-Khan was the initial choice for the song, however she turned down the offer due to date problems. The song is an integral part of the script and will be shot grandly in Mumbai.

Pakistan pick uncapped fast bowler for Tests against WI

Tuesday, November 07, 2006

Source: PTI

Karachi: Missing the services of two of its key pacemen, the Pakistani selection committee today picked uncapped Samiullah Niazi to strengthen the pace attack in the first two cricket Tests against the West Indies starting later this month.

Niazi was included in a 15-member squad as a reward for his consistent performance for Pakistan 'A' in Eurasia Cup in Abu Dhabi early this year and for his departmental team WAPDA. His call-up comes in the wake of bans imposed on pacemen Shoaib Akhtar and Mohammad Asif for failing a drug test.

"Niazi is a good prospect and has performed consistently well for the last two seasons. He will also bring variety to the attack with his left-arm swing," chief selector Wasim Bari told PTI. The selectors also recalled prolific batsman Yasir Hameed who has not played in a Test since June last year.

Having appeared in 17 Tests and 48 one-dayers, Yasir is expected to give the team management more options while picking their opening pair although they also have allrounder Shoaib Malik who has opened before with considerable success.

The squad has two specialist spinners in Danish Kaneria and left-armer Abdul Rehman which is an indication that Brian Lara's men might get spin friendly wickets for the first two Tests in Lahore and Multan. The first Test begins on November 11.

Squad: Inzamam-ul-Haq (Capt), Younis Khan, Mohammad Yousuf, Imran Farhat, Mohammad Hafeez, Yasir Hameed, Faisal Iqbal, Shoaib Malik, Kamran Akmal, Samiullah Niazi, Umar Gul, Shahid Nazir, Abdul Razzaq, Abdul Rehman and Danish Kaneria.

Mohammad Asif appeals against ban

Tuesday, November 07, 2006

Source: PTI

Karachi: Paceman Mohammad Asif on November 06, filed an appeal against a one-year ban imposed on him by a Pakistan Cricket Board-appointed tribunal for a failed drug test.

Asif submitted the notice of appeal to Dr. Suhail Saleem, Coordinator of PCB's medical commission. After filing the appeal, the 23-year-old swing bowler said a newly-constituted commission would hear his appeal against the ban and expressed his full trust in it.

"I have filed my appeal through my lawyer, Aftab Gul, and submitted it to Dr. Suhail Saleem. I hope my ban will be reviewed by the appeal committee," Asif told the media at the National Cricket Academy in Lahore.

Asif, who tested postive for a banned steroid along with fellow paceman Shoaib Akhtar, also claimed that he had substantial evidence to prove his innocence.

However, Shoaib was yet to appeal against his two-year doping ban. He is expected to file his appeal against the ban either today or tomorrow. The PCB has announced setting up of a two-member appeal committee comprising former High Court judge Fakhruddin Ibrahim and former Test cricketer Haseeb Ehsan.

Lollywood Lights - November 9, 2006

Yusra is back
Yusra who made a huge impact when she entered Lollywood 12 years ago is back in showbiz. She had stopped working in movies as she was not too happy with the way the Pakistani film industry was running and had migrated to Canada. Although people said that she went to Canada to get married, Yusra denies these rumours.

Playback time
Ever since Urdu films made a comeback, singer Shabnam Majeed has decided to do playback for films. Earlier, Shabnam, whose silky voice is considered one of the best in Pakistan, was concentrating purely on her ghazal career and promoting her own albums.

Resham on top
Critics are of the opinion that Resham's popularity is sure to soar after her new TV serial Banjar is aired. Noted filmmakers such as Chaudhry Karamat and Chaudhry Shehzad are confident of Resham's performance in the serial. Meanwhile, the actress's new film Tarap is already making waves.

A Hit Pair
In the past, Reema and Momy Rana have proven themselves a successful pair on screen. Momy is currently shooting his own film War with Reema and the reports are that the pair have again done a fabulous job.

Small screen beckons
These days, everyone in the film industry seems to be trying their luck on the small screen. The latest to join the bandwagon is Javed Shaikh's brother, Saleem. He will be producing and starring in the serial Tanha Koi. Javed will also be working in the serial. Sadia Imam will play the lead opposite Saleem.

Arshad Ali picks up sixth award

Dubai: The UAE's skipper Arshad Ali picked up his sixth prize in nine years at the annual Shyam Bhatia cricket awards late on Tuesday.

Ali, who has been the captain of the UAE national team for the past one year, was adjudged the best allrounder with 632 runs and 22 wickets to his credit.

An employee in the commercial visa section of Emirates airline, Ali has won this award on five previous occasions.

Last year, Ali could not compete for the award - a crystal trophy and a cash benefit of Dh4,000 - due to a knee injury

"But I was bent on doing well this year, and the results are there to show that it basically boils down to self-belief, commitment and hard work," Ali said.

The Emirates airline employee has been a consistent performer for both club and country. With more than 400 runs to his credit, Ali led from the front in the UAE, successfully defending the ACC Trophy in Malaysia earlier this summer.

"We are doing well at this moment, but it will be nice to see the UAE play in the ICC World Cup," Ali said.

Delivering the keynote address, Shyam Bhatia, the patron of the awards night for nearly a decade, remarked that he believed in Arshad Ali's capabilities from the first time he met him in 1997.

"We were touring South Africa (with the Air-India squad) when I happened to watch Arshad Ali play. It was at that time I knew he would go on to be a great exponent of the game," Bhatia said.

"These are like the Oscar awards for cricket in the UAE and it is being done entirely for the pure love of the game," Bhatia said.

"I believe in our players and I know how much they look up to some of the legends who have graced the sport over the years," he added.

During the nine-year history of the Shyam Bhatia cricket awards, eminent cricketers such as Sunil Gavaskar, Ravi Shastri, Michael Holding, Clive Lloyd and Imran Khan have graced the occasion at the request of Bhatia.

"It means a lot to our cricketers to have some of the most famous names from the world of cricket come to Dubai and give away his award," Bhatia stated.

"I want to inspire cricketers in this part of the world, and I am convinced these awards go a long way in achieving this objective."

Arshad Ali's teammate at Emirates airline, Kashif Khan, walked away with the best batsman prize, while Faraz Ul Haq of Consolidated Shipping Services took the best bowler prize for his 33 wickets.

Awards were also given to star performers in the junior section along with three select umpires from Abu Dhabi, Sharjah and Dubai. The total cash amount for the awards was Dh20,000.

From next year, however, there will be a 25 per cent increase in the total amount of the awards. "Inflation has affected us too and I think it is right to have a 25 per cent increase in the total prize money," Bhatia stated.

Engagement with Pakistan a 'three-legged process'

Saturday, November 11, 2006

New Delhi: The Cabinet Committee on Security has given the go-ahead to the agenda for talks between the foreign secretaries of India and Pakistan next week, involving, essentially, a "three-legged process".

The first leg will revolve around Pakistan's adherence to its commitment not to allow any act of terrorism against India from its soil. The second will be the level of commitment to resolve all outstanding bilateral issues in the ambit of the composite dialogue process. The third will be the attempt to build a lasting relationship, involving the creation of stakes in each other's welfare.

These talks would go beyond just a review of the third round of the dialogue process, which was interrupted by the Mumbai train blasts.

The talks between Shivshankar Menon and Riaz Mohammad Khan, scheduled for November 14 and 15, are not "well choreographed" because of the "peculiar circumstances" in which they were put off, and would determine the future course and direction of bilateral negotiations, sources said.

As part of discussions on the joint terror mechanism, India intends to use the talks to "test" Pakistan by giving it some of the "clinching" evidence it has. The evidence, related not only to the Mumbai blasts but also to other acts of terror in the past year, will deal with the involvement of "elements", terrorists and their sponsors based in Pakistan.

With specific regard to the blasts, sources said all evidence cannot be shared as a chargesheet had not been filed yet. Sharing all the evidence could, therefore, jeopardise the legal process.

After providing the evidence, India will wait and see what Pakistan does. "We will see how willing they are. We will put Pakistan to the test," official sources said.

The Siachen and Sir Creek issues will also come up for discussion between the foreign secretaries.

Pakistan's ground-breaking drag artist
By Syed Shoaib Hasan
BBC News, Karachi

Nawazish Ali has proved to be universally popular
"Darling, you are sooo naughty," purrs an elegant sari-clad woman glowing out of primetime television.

Going by the name of Begum (Lady) Nawazish Ali, she hosts an eponymous talk show that has taken Pakistan by storm.

Flirting and skirting her way through politics, society gossip and plain old sexual chemistry, Begum has become the most popular icon to inundate Pakistani fantasy in a while.

How is this possible in Pakistan where what is acceptable behaviour from female actors is still largely determined conservative Islamic values?

The answer lies in the identity of the Begum - who is a woman in every sense except the biological one.

"I am God's child," says a smiling Begum Nawazish Ali, or Ali Saleem to give him his birth name, talking to the BBC in his "normal guise".

Clad in jeans and T-shirt, 27-year-old Ali talked passionately about his life and work.

"As long as I can remember, I have wanted to be a woman," he declares.

I never refuse anyone anything

Nawazish Ali

Twirling his shoulder length curly brown hair, Ali looks wistfully in the distance as he recounts how it was growing up in Pakistan for someone so unconventional.

"My father was in the army and we used to move around quite a bit," he says.

With his parents, he accepts there were problems, leading to his examination by a psychologist when he was 14-years-old.

The psychologist, however, allayed all fears, and "from that time on my parents were totally behind me".

That Ali was different from other boys was quite evident from his interests.

"I loved playing with dolls and dressing up with my female cousins to whom I have always been very close," he recounts.

In those days of innocence, he would often dream of becoming a woman.

"I wanted to be Sri Devi, Nazia Hasan, Benazir Bhutto... all the beautiful and powerful women in my world," explains Ali.

'Worst period'

Gifted with a great voice and a natural sense of the theatrical, he delighted in displaying his talents.

That was in the early 1990s in Islamabad. Soon after, in 1995, Ali shifted with his family to Karachi.

Nawazish Ali is one of Pakistan's few openly transvestite people

This was "the worst period in my life", he confesses, with his parents going through a divorce.

It was during these depressing days that Ali met "Yasmin, who made everything possible".

Yasmin Ismail was one of Pakistani television's finest actresses, who died of cancer last year.

"She was the best thing that ever happened to me," says the screen star.

Ali explains how Ismail introduced him to theatre, groomed his natural histrionics and generally played the part of his mentor.

"She was my mother, father and best friend," says Ali wistfully, adding "I give her 100% credit for any success I have achieved."

Ismail was involved in a popular theatre group called Gripps, and that was where Ali started out.

"My first performance was in a play called 'Art ya Atta' (Art or Bread) in May 1998," Ali says. He did an impersonation of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto in the play.

"When I spoke, there was pin drop silence and then the house came down," he exclaims.

The applause was thunderous and the show did record business.

Divorced socialite

The next six years were those of learning and growth. During these times, Ali expanded his repertoire with considerable success.

The actor loves being the darling of the audience

In March 2004, the idea for transvestite chat show hostess Begum Nawazish Ali first came up during a discussion with friends Nadeem Baig and Omar Adil, a national TV host, in Lahore.

"Omar said that he saw me as much more than the typical characters I was doing and we came up with the idea of this middle aged divorced socialite who knows everybody," gushes out Ali.

Initially, Ali promoted it with GEO, one of the largest TV channels. That deal failed to materialize and rival channel Aaj took up the challenge, quickly putting out a pilot.

"Nadeem was Director entertainment and he told me to bring it over," Ali explains. Aaj moved quickly, and a pilot was soon out.

"It was like nothing anybody had seen," says Azfar Ali, a local television producer. "The most amazing thing was the fact that he was able to deliver it all in a way that the masses could relate to it."

Trivialising politics?

No sooner had the first programme finished than the show was the talk of the town.

From politicians to movie stars to sportsmen, all have had their turn on the show.

So popular has the show become that a sitting federal minister specially requested to be invited.

That may have been unnecessary, as Ali smiles and declares saucily, "I never refuse anyone anything".

The show is not without critics, who accuse it of trivialising politics in a country that has had more than its fill of dictators.

Ali denies this, saying "our politicians have been destroyed under a well thought campaign", adding "I want them to be popular again".

Furthermore, he says that the military - such a powerful influence in Pakistan - have been deliberately kept out of the show.

"I believe that democracy is the only option for us, and this is my contribution to the cause," Ali says determinedly.

He also wants to show what kind of country Pakistan really is, in contrast to the 'Terrorism Central' nation that it is often portrayed as.

"And I will do it," Begum exclaims and, smiling seductively, adds "after all who can resist me?"
