yeah if some sects have made it an obligation on them then i cant argue more there, its their choice and they are answerable. The setting is of course our culture and if one goes deeper there are people who religiously follow saints and dargahsOriginally posted by: ..-Raindrops-..
This is an issue of sects I guess, majority sect in Pakistan believe in all these dargha and stuff, some people are against it. Why should writer restrict just because it is controversial for some people. Firstly it is not even a religious show but these things are part of our culture specially the setting and the era that they are showing
Just one word for the very first episode of Sadqay Tumharay; BRILLIANT. I am sure everyone here would agree that this drama has had a great start. Writing of Khalil ur Rehman Qamar & direction of Ehtashamuddin; Sadqay Tumhare hit our TV screens tonight with a bang & I must say, the very first episode was nothing short of perfection.
Uske mangetar ka naam Khay se shuru hota hai, aur wo samajhti hai ke aggar Khay aur Sheen mai Wao likhoongi, to lagega hum dono ke darmiyaan deewar khari ho gai hai'. This perfectly sums up Shano's (Mahira Khan) frame of mind where she is in love with the promise that her grandfather did on her behalf, sealing her fate with her cousin Khalil (Adnan Malik). The engagement that was verbally announced more than 10 years ago is enough of a reason for Shano to cling onto the rope of love. When you're in love, you do everything in your control to protect it & unwillingly you harbour such superstitions which whenever prevented make you feel that your relation is secure. When in love; you want to do those little things which might be misunderstood but give you a great sense of assurance that you're not falling short of your responsibility towards your relation & just like a hopeless romantic, Shano - without knowing a bit about her fianc Khalil, is in love with the idea of being engaged to him & yes, she is in love with everything related to him.
Little does she know that her parents (Samiya Mumtaz & Rehan Shiekh) are in no mood to rekindle the promise that Shano's grandfather made to Khalil's parents regarding their engagement but Shano's father still seems a bit considerate where he thinks it would be appropriate to know what's in Shano's heart because she already knows that she's betrothed to Khalil.
Another opportunity has presented itself where everyone will gather for a family wedding & just like what Shano has been doing in the past, she feels she must attend the wedding just in a hope that her fianc might show up there. Khalil, has never thought much about her fiance because he seems too preoccupied in his routine & to him; for now- this verbal commitment means nothing but he doesn't know his life's about to be changed & Shano has unknowingly played a role in bringing him to her, where I must admit I loved the telepathic aspect of their relation because it depicts a love of some other sort; an unconditional & a purest form of love.
I enjoyed all the conversations that Shano had with her friend Humaira (Sanya Shamshad). Humaira only knows what Shano's going through & just like a sincere friend, she feels all she can do is; say a special prayer for Shano so that she doesn't return disappointed this time around. In such a difficult time when you feel your heart might stop, such a heart-warming gesture from a friend gives you exactly such a hope that you're looking for.
Abb surkhi powder ki zaroorat nahi hai usay, dekhoge na to heran reh jaoge'. On the other hand, Khalil's cousin Maqsood (Shamil Khan) tries to tell Khalil all that he knows about Shano while giving him an idea that his fiance is picture perfect. He genuinely feels it's about time that Khalil fulfils his promise & gets to interact with Shano because he has seen the ardency in her eyes for Khalil. That was another conversation that seemed very heartfelt & genuine because Maqsood is mature enough to know that no matter what this engagement means to Khalil, Shano has bet her life on it.
I must say the direction was top-notch & all the added scenes completed the episode perfectly. No other location could've done justice to this story & I feel the director has been able to capture the essence of it undoubtedly. I loved the soundtrack & I feel with this drama, HUM's on its way to redemption. I totally feel that the whole cast was chosen perfectly because everyone seems really comfortable in their characters. Sanya Shamshad looked perfect in her supporting role. Farhaan Ali Agha seemed perfect as a father. Samiya Mumtaz is a fine actress & Rehan Sheikh's acting is known to everyone, however I do feel he shouldn't have forced the harshness in his voice & I hope that it'd subside in the future episodes. & now coming onto our protagonists, to be honest I wasn't sure about Adnan Malik but seeing him as Khalil, has really changed my preconceived notions about him & his acting. & yes, that goes without saying that Mahira Khan actually looks really pretty as Shano. It looks like she has put in a lot of effort to portray herself as Shano & match the age of her character & yes; I must say she has been able to do achieve the look perfectly. I also see a lot of improvement in her accent, in her acting & I am really looking forward to her story because without a doubt, she has been able to convey the crux of her character right from the beginning.
Being a love-story buff myself, I say everyone who loves love-stories should brace themselves because as said by HUM, we're about to experience a timeless love story. *fingers crossed*

Zahra Mirza.
PS: I am covering for my dear friend Fatima Awan as she had to attend a family function tonight. Do look out for her comments in the comments section below & look forward to her amazing reviews starting from the 2nd episode.
I might give this a try tonight 🤔
If someone were to ask if such a time of sweetness and innocence ever really did exist, I would answer: yes it did, and if it didn't ...it should have. Watching the first episode of Sadkey Tumharey was as magical as the promos and teasers promised. It was as if the fabric of time and had frayed just a little allowing the viewer to slip back into a much simpler time where there was no internet and no cell phones. Ehatashamuddin has brought a beautiful vision full of light and gentle colours to our screens that which I hope will keep us just as entranced till the end.
Shanno played by the ever lovely Mahirah Khan is infatuated with her fianc and Khala ka beta Khalil, even though she hasn't met him in ten years. Khalil(Adnan Malik), is just not interested in some cousin in a dusty village and asks their mutual cousin Maqsood to tell her not to think of him.Even Shanno's parents have changed their minds ; after so many years and so little interaction they too want to move on . But Shanno cannot move on , she longs to meet Khalil the center of her dreams. She and her friends go to pray at a dargah and Khalil sees her in his dreams. So the scene is set for them to meet at a family wedding.
One of the great strengths of this story are the family scenes , the little hierarchies and most of all the love shared between them . It was heartening to hear Shannos' father wonder if breaking off the engagement would hurt his daughter's feelings and even more sweet to see Shanno and her sisters give up their right to the first roti to their ever hungry little brother . The way Khalil's father insists a souteli Khala is just as good as a saggi Khala and how he should talk to his elder cousin with respect are all values woven into our daily which have not changed with the passage of time.
The story, like the times is not complex but the full HumTv (read Momina Duraid) treatment it blooms like a flower. Each scene was a well-crafted piece of art, from the village of Bhopalwalla to the house in Lahore. With a story like this there is a danger of over-romanticizing the past but so far the director has managed not to blur the sharp edges of reality. The dirty village street , the dusty houses , the importance of Maqsood's bicycle and even Shanno's greedy little brother Haider all lend enough depth to make the softer images just possible. As a Punjabi I could really relate to all the intricacies of family life portrayed, even if live sat samundar paar .Apart from the slightly overdone "going to the Darga" scenes there was a wonderful authenticity to this episode that is rooted deep in our culture . There is no doubt Khalil Ur Rehman is genius at script writing but unlike Pyarey Afzal the dialogues were not allowed to overshadow the actual story. There was more showing than telling ,at least in this episode .
It is easy enough to sit spellbound just by Mahirah Khan's beauty but her acting is well up to par too. She seems very comfortable as Shanno and the only complaint I can muster is that she did not sound Punjabi enough in the first few scenes. Suffice to say in our recent interview with Khalil Ur Rehman (coming soon) he said she had done complete justice Shanno's character. Adnan Malik is nice surprise, carrying of Khalil Ur Rehman Qamar's autobiographical role with a touch less swagger than the dialogues would suggest, ultimately making him much more likable. Even at a distance Mahirah and Adnan have that special screen chemistry required to make a romance like this work, so it looks as if their actual scenes together will be fascinating.
The rest of the cast looks at ease in all their roles and as yet no one seems out of place. The only thing annoying the heck out of me is Shanno's best friend's makeup. Whoever gave that poor girl that bucket of white out was not her friend. A note to our actors/actresses/producers.. In case you hadn't noticed we are Pakistani ..Some of us are white, some of us are brown and we are every colour in between.. Please accept this and let everyone feel beautiful the way God made them.
Thank you Momina Duraid , Director Ehtashamuddin and team Sadkey tumharey for bringing back the fragrance of a time not so long ago. Most of all thank you Khalil Ur Rehman Qamar for sharing part of your life in the form of this serial with us .

Dipped in the ink of nostalgia, his beautiful words lovingly committed to paper, Khalil ur Rehman Qamar's Sadqay Tumhare is an ode to days gone by, to an era when life was simple and worries few. A time when time itself held no meaning. A time when love was the be all and end all. A time when real world concerns paled in comparison to that one benevolent gaze. A time when aashiq and maashuq were indistinguishable. A time when even the semblance of a separation between them was deemed unbearable. A time when it was all about Shanu and Khalil, and Shanu and Khalil were all that mattered - the rest all trivial and irrelevant.
It's been a while since we've seen a full-on love story and for that reason alone I was eager to see this one unfold. That it was penned by Khalil sahab and was based on his own life story, made this one that much more special. Add to that Mahira Khan's return and the introduction of a fresh face, Adnan Malik, and some enticing promos, and there was no question that I was definitely gonna be checking this one out. That said, I have to say I did temper my expectations because of the spate of recent doozies from HUM TV, and so it was with my fingers and toes crossed that I sat down to watch this first episode.
Sadqay Tumhare opened in Bhopalwala with Shanu's introduction. Shanu is a girl whose world revolves around her absentee mangetar, Khalil. Though nobody from her family has seen the guy in ten years, where do such trivial issues matter to those afflicted by love - for Shanu its all about Khalil. She has her fair share of fears, but so firm is her belief in love that she wills herself to overlook the obvious, that Khalil might not be equally interested is a thought not allowed. As the overburdened and stressed mother of five children, four daughters and a son, Ammi ji has little time to spare for her oldest daughter's rose colored dreams, and so it is in her best friend Humera that Shanu confides her innermost thoughts. In a beautifully shot dargah sequence Humera brings neighboring girls together to join them in praying for her best friend's dreams to come true. Rows of girls carrying lanterns through darkened fields, lighting of diyas, praying at the saint's tomb, tying of the mannat ka dhagah, all made for a stunning visual.
Beautifully interlaced with this Bhopalwala dargah sequence was Khalil's restlessness in Lahore. He who leads life in the fast lane, filled as it is with cricket matches, studies, and teasing his bookish cousin, Dr. Maqsood. He who had initially laughed off the notion of a bachpan ki mangni and that too to a gaon ki larki, and he who had no problems spurning the affections of the muhalley ki wanna-be heroine, batting eyelashes, come hither smile n all, now finds himself haunted by dreams of a stunning girl, jis ki thori pe til tha. On learning that this mystery girl could be Shanu, forgotten are his objections to the bachpan ki mangetar and we have our hero sahab counting down days to their pehla takra - at Liaquat bhai's shaadi in Tooti Chak.
As far as first episodes go this was a good start. In terms of story telling, Khalil sahabdoes well in introducing his main protagonists and etching out their personality traits. Nicely embedded within the romance were hints of estrangements between sisters and some other familial tensions. Listening to Shanu's parents it is evident that they are none too thrilled with this bachpan ki mangni, whereas Khalil's parents seem relatively ambivalent about the whole deal. Also woven into the narrative is Dr. Maqsood's track, it will be interesting to see where he fits into Shanu and Khalil's love story. Given there are lot more characters waiting to be introduced along with more details yet to be revealed about those we met today, seems like story wise there is plenty more to come.
In terms of actors, welcome back Mahira! Even though I didn't buy her wig/extensions, her non-gaon ka accent and the pink gloss, I loved her as the hopeless romantic Shanu, and yes, she looked absolutely stunning. Samiya Mumtaz was another actress I was looking forward to here, but there wasn't much of her today. I look forward to learning more about her character as the serial unfolds. Same goes for Rehan Sheikh, and I do hope he will be better utilized here than he was in the disastrous Laa. Farhan Ali Agha, his patently fake mustache notwithstanding, is another one I am looking out for. Shamil Khan's character has me intrigued, hopefully he will have a significant part to play here. As for Saniya Shamshad, I am hoping that Humera will have a bit more to do than to smile every two seconds. This serial also marks Adnan Malik's debut, and I confess that I was not particularly impressed with him in the promos. But that was then. After watching him in the first episode I have to say I am pleasantly surprised. His was a very confident debut as he stood his own and made a definite impression. Looking forward to seeing more of his Khalil in the coming weeks.
All in all this was a good opening episode, director Ehtishamuddin seems to have a good handle on the story. The DOP has been very successful in conveying visually the feel of the story. That said, I would, however, stop short of calling this episode fabulous or brilliant. Though the locations were great, from the verdant rural scenes to the busy, narrow streets of Lahore, the interiors painstakingly
detailed, and the styling of characters aptly done- a shout out to Feeha Jamshed for nailing it yet again - for me the loud, constant background score was a huge turnoff.
Similarly, the OST has compelling lyrics, but I did not find the composition reflective of the overall ambiance of that which was being visually narrated. The taans and alaapswere loud and overlong, a softer kaafi would have worked wonders instead. Another issue was the over long scenes. The introductory scene made for a creative entry point but it went on for over six minutes. Similarly the scene between Humera and Shanu, when they talk about Liaquat's upcoming shaadi, though visually stunning went on for too long, as did the praying at the mazar scene. Here's to hoping for a tighter edited and easy-on-the-ears, aesthetically pleasing episode next week.
What did you all think of Sadqay Tumhare? Looking forward to reading your thoughts...
