Who was your favorite character? I remember having watched this movie at some point but I can’t recall any details from it except from the countless memes and pop culture references smiley36

Anjali Sharma, played by Kajol Ma'am. In flashback, she voices things like "Mujhe ladki mat bulao", like why does she have to look down on feminity to be shown to be unique + there is this scene where she is dressed in flashy colours, just to be ridiculed by her college mates. Her naivety in believing Rahul's "Pyaar Dosti Hai" dialoguebaazi is also played to her disadvantage with people being like, she should have told him she liked him, when he clearly told her to her face that he is interested in Tina. How would her confessing achieve anything? Rahul was convinced he likes Tina, Tina likes Rahul, speaking up would have complicated and made things even more awkward, instead Anjali leaving the unbalanced equation was best for all of them and gave her scope to move on. I respected her for being mature enough to understand it is not her place to interfere and live her own life.

But then 8 years later, they gave her a makeover to become an aadarsha abla naari with saaris to show some skin and *voila* suddenly Rahul is gesturing ILY to her. Becoming more feminine or wearing saaris does not indicate weakness by any measure, however here the clothes or her change in attitude was used to showcase that conforming to certain unwritten social norms is the only way she could get her first love. Also to add to that, Aman was such a genuinely nice guy, why be unfair to him and give him expectations when she did not love him? Atleast if she could not refuse the marriage, she could have been upfront with him about how she still has unresolved trauma from her ex. And I will always have an issue with why was she was written in such a manner when she was quite muffat in the beginning?

This is one of the few movies that I have watched a million times since childhood coz Sony MAX loved to play it, and I can assure you it taught a lot of girls at impressionable ages during the 90s and 00s that looks are all that matter, and men are shallow enough to only care about you if you conform to their idea of who you should be, even if that means you are not your true self anymore. That is the biggest takeaway I have from this film.

The flashback till their friendship smiley36smiley20

SRK Sir and Kajol Ma'am are iconic in their portrayal of bestfriends-to-lovers onscreen, and that will always be my trope! smiley9

But no matter what, the fashion (hairbands, friendship bands, 'COOL necklace') and music will forever be iconicsmiley27

1. Kuch Kuch Hota Hai: "Tum paas aaye, yoon muskuraye..tumne na jaane kya sapne dikhaaye"

Everyone has dreamed of dancing to this song as Rahul/Anjali/Tina with their crush, even if they deny it! smiley17

2. Koi Mil Gaya: "Meri aankhon hai woh, meri saanson mein hai woh, aur kahoon tumse kya?"

Every birthday party was incomplete without this song and everyone used to know the steps! Many used to replay this song JUST to see Rahul walk up to Anjali at the above line, though it was blatantly obvious to both the audience and Anjali what his choice was smiley36

3. Saajanji Ghar Aaye: WHAT AN ENTRY *whistles*!! This saajanji had the audience's heart from the first shot! smiley16

One of the most memorable wedding songs of the 90s!! Aman was such a sweetheart, unpopular opinion, but I am glad he did not SETTLE for Anjali if she was did not love him. He deserved better..

4. Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (Sad): "Jaane wafaa hoke bekaraar, barso kiya maine intezaar.."

When the instrumental version of this plays when Rahul and Anjali meet after 8 years, everyone had happy tears in their eyes, and then at the marriage, we were all half afraid iss baar bhi Anjali ka pehla pyaar adhoora reh jaayega...

5. Yeh Ladka Hai Deewana: "But he's your bestfriend yaar.." "But she's your bestfriend yaar.." smiley37

The friendship anthem of the 90s, perfectly encapsulating the tu-tu main-main platonic friendships between both the sexes, where they are calling out how both of them are equally frazy. Also gave the most memorable handshake! But still do not understand why the entire college was so invested in their fight smiley36

6. Tujhe Yaad Na Meri Aayi: "Tune acchi preet nibhayi, kisi se ab kya kehna?" smiley38

We all felt Anjali's heartbreak in the preceding scene where she put on a brave front when Rahul spoke about confessing to Tina and breaking all her hopes and the entire song, where she tries to piece herself together. Yes, she should not have felt entitled to his love, but he should have not played the 'Pyaar Dosti Hai' trick on her either. They had a beautiful friendship which got RUINED because of love.

7. Raghupati Raghav Raja Ram: Bhaggu knows why this was like this! smiley44

The contrast between Anjali singing the normal bhajan and then Rahul in the midst of the remix crew smiley36

8. Ladki Badi Anjani Hai: "Roke koi mujhe zara, bhar na aaye dil mera.."

The above sentiment is echoed in the audience, who get to witness Rahul and Anjali together again. This song has all the 'feminine' transformations in Anjali, and tells us how Rahul still has the 'outward beauty' criteria to fall in love...which is why I prefer to just listen to the audio, but there are these moments when they are reminiscing their friendship, and it is hard to ignore they DID miss each other as best friends.

agreed for all th pointsss
