A question for everyone who has read GoT series and recommends reading it. Can each of the books in this series be read as a standalone, or is it one big story? I know that the series has at least two more books to be published yet, so if I read the 5 published books, will I be left with an incomplete story?
Unfortunately the books are a big, long story. And not all the books have the same quality. GRRM has really gone full out on world building and characters. It's quite overwhelming really. That said, it is a great story and one that deserves to be read. The first few books are just so bloody great. However if you don't like cliffhangers, you might just want to wait for the remaining two books to get published, if they ever get published. Also, the tv series kinda resolves many plotlines so it's not like you'll be totally ignorant as to what will happen next.
But if you are looking for something similar but shorter, I have a recommendation. The First Law Trilogy by Joe Abercrombie. It's like an all out classic fantasy with wizards and a barbarian and a soldier with quests and all. But it's not your usual classic fantasy. There are some very well done twists. And if you are a person who cares about character development more than plot, you're going to love Abercrombie's cast of characters, especially Sand dan Glokta. He's one of the best charactercharacters ever created in the whole fantasy genre IMO.
Do lemme know if you give these books a go.
