Do try GoT. It's wonderful and one of my favourite fantasy series out there! ❤️

Divergent is also very unique but the rest of the trilogy is very bad.

That said, I felt the first book was quite good and the twists were really well done. You could give it another try maybe. The supernatural stuff is very less compared to other fantasy books. Have you watched the series though?

Also, idk if we have interacted before. I'm Aparna.

Hey Aparna, we haven't interacted before, I am Simantini...Yeah I bought the first book of GOT, "A song of ice and fire" in excitement seeing its popularity quite a few years back, but I couldn't move after few pages. Maybe I would really try some day. Nope I haven't watched the series too, tried watching the first episode of first season earlier, but again it didn't interest me enough to continue..

I'd love that. Let me know if the others are interested too😛

Dumbledore's sexuality, Hermione becoming black, her making up Jew characters who weren't in the books when she was called out for not having one. Then Cho Chang wala controversy. I hate this insincere sort of inclusivity that she shows. And her stand on trans people is just appalling.

I have always struggled with the concept of separating the art and the artist. And if the art in question is a book, then it's very difficult for me to view it separate from the artist.

See, that's what I meant when I said I don't follow her comments etc. I've only heard about Dumbledore's sexuality part and even that through an IF club. Hermione being black is not a part of the story. I think the actor who played the character on stage was black. Whatever it is, I've worked very hard to forget that the Cursed Child exists, and it's in no way related to canon in my head (honestly, CB writes better stories🤢). And I never heard of the Jew characters before. No idea what that debate is about. Or the Cho Chang controversy either.

The first bad thing that I had read related to the series was the Cursed Child book, and I've steadfastly ignored all theories, related stories etc since then. I'll continue to do so. I really love the original series, even if I'm not obsessed with it anymore. Not going to ruin it for anything.❤️

Yes omg.. That book was a drag. I think 10% into the book, I just wanted to read the last five chapters and be done with it.

Omg, it was the same for me too😆 The only part that I liked and still (somewhat) remember was the fight scene and Sati's death towards the end of the book. To be precise, the last five chapters or so, I think🤣

I've been wanting to read this book for so long because of all the wonderful reviews. Another praise coming from this club is really encouraging.

A question for everyone who has read GoT series and recommends reading it. Can each of the books in this series be read as a standalone, or is it one big story? I know that the series has at least two more books to be published yet, so if I read the 5 published books, will I be left with an incomplete story?

Oh thats great to hear.. I think you'll find the first few chapters a little bit slow, mainly because we are getting introduced to the characters. And being a character focused story, GRRM really lets the plot take a back seat just to explore the nuances of the characters. The same can be said for GOT tv series although I really feel weird recommending this series to any one after the disaster of the final season. But the first 4 seasons are just brilliant. The start can be slow, especially if you aren't an epic fantasy reader/watcher. But I think if you just manage to sit through the first episode, you'll want to continue it. Also, if you are interested in politics of a world, you'd enjoy GOT a lot.
