At this point, I will re-share my salient findings on Meeru/Murtu pre-marital physical touching based on my view of first 5 episodes to refresh everyone. Murtu ne bohat kahan kahan kaise kaise kidhr kidhr touch kiya jiss ka hisaab liya hai maine. Murtu purana paapi hai.

By my math, in the first 5 episodes, Meeru and Murtu had 12 encounters and we saw Murtasim touch her in 9 of them (that's like 75%). This does NOT count all instances of them ALMOST ALWAYS being in each other's physical space - standing very close and leaning towards each other.

Types of touching included:

hand/wrist grabs

face caresses

arm touch

finger touch

upper and mid-back touch

shoulder touch

side boob touch

Edited to add: Some IF folks speculate Murtu picked Merub when she fainted after the slap as we found her in bed in another room in next scene - KON UTHA KE LE GAYA THA BEHOSH MERUB KO MURTU KI BAANHON SE BY THE POOL. This is speculative, happened off-screen, so not added in my data.

I saw a tweet which said that one of the ways in which Meeru teased Murtu in the bedroom scene in Episode 31 was to let her dupatta graze against him before she left

I have compiled the evidence but can't make up my mind if this was intentional or not.

I therefore need IF detectives🤓 to decode the following for me:

1/ Was the dupatta graze intentionally part of Meeru's tease?

2/ The dupatta very evidently grazed against (ahem) Little Murtu 😳- was that also intentional?

3/ Murtu smiled once Meeru brushes past him with her dupatta. Is that related to the dupatta grazing you know what incident OR something else?

There is something getting lost in translation. What is labeled as trashy romance novels pertains to Romance genre fiction in the West - and the perception depends on factors like how the genre evolved in the West, how these books are marketed and consumed in the West, etc.

According to Romance Writers of America:

Two basic elements comprise every genre Romance novel: a central love story and an emotionally satisfying and optimistic ending.

• A Central Love Story: The main plot centers around individuals falling in love and struggling to make the relationship work. A writer can include as many subplots as they want as long as the love story is the main focus of the novel.
• An Emotionally Satisfying and Optimistic Ending: In a romance, the lovers who risk and struggle for each other and their relationship are rewarded with emotional justice and unconditional love.

Romance novels have varying levels of heat: clean, sweet, warm, sensual, erotic. Most romance novels have some sex (warm to sensual categories). The amount of sex in Romance genre novels is not related to quality of writing, how well the characters and relationships are developed and layered, story arcs, plot complexity, etc.

The wordy trashy romance novel refers to a (once) popular stereotype that Romance novels are low-brow escapist fiction, that they are of low-quality and have lots of gratuitous sex, and that they are read by housewives - some other terms used for them have been "smut", "bodice rippers". The trashy romance label/perception also came from what old school romance novel covers used to look like (see image below). Even current covers tend to be racier than covers for books in fantasy, sci fi, literary fiction, etc. but that is a marketing/branding convo.

I have been reading Romance genre fiction since 2008. The reality of whether Romance novels are trashy is very different of course. You have good quality and low quality books. I have read Romances with extremely layered writing and complex relationships with beautiful, lyrical prose but also that those that read like bad Wattpad stores. Your typical M&B/Harlequin tends to be more formulaic with worse writing which is what Amna seems to have read. The genre has also changed a lot from themes/tropes in 80s/90s till now. Amna again seems to have read mostly these books from 80s/90s when forced seduction was thing in some books. Also note, very often the covers are a poor reflection of what is inside - so really don't judge a book by its cover. A lurid cover does not necessarily mean poor writing paper thin characters and gratuitous sex.

So, while Romance is a genre of fiction - trashy romance is not. It is a stereotype really, and Amna's impression seems to have come from reading a specific subset of books from decades ago although the genre has evolved a lot till now and there is too much variation. The term trashy books is also misogynistic- looking down at women's reading choices as having little merit - but formulaic detective novels for men with paper-thin female characters have never been called trash. For a while, Romance readers and writers have tried to reclaim the world. A very popular blog I used to visit was Smart Bitches,Trashy Books. English Lit departments are also now more welcoming of scholarship and research in popular Romance fiction.

There is no desi equivalent of the Romance genre or trashy romance novels but in terms of stereotyping and stigma, it would be similar to digests ki kahani/afsane. Digest writers are looked down upon in PTV and people often associate digest readers as housewives who do not have much education and like stories about love/romance/saas/bahu etc. In reality of course, authors like Umera Ahmed, Farhat Ishtiq, Nemra Ahmed stared off as digest writers and there are digest writers who write complex layered stories.
