Hello music lovers!

We realized that there are lot of people interested in learning &/or sharing trivia about music and musicians and thought why not have a single thread that would have all these facts and anecdotes?

This thread is for just that.

What you can post:

• Facts about the making of a piece of music, or the origins of it.
• You are welcome to post facts/ trivia about the lives of musicians but keep it relevant to their music & not delve too much into their personal lives - unless it relates to a song.
  
• Photographs, videos and interviews are welcome.
• Trivia on all music and musicians from any era or genre is welcome.
• Please keep it as factual as you can and quote a source.
• Tweets/ other Social media posts, interviews, Internet articles, TV shows, books are all allowed as sources.
• Often facts are contrary depending on the source and unless the source is an authorized/ official one, we cannot trust its authenticity. So, although you're welcome to post such sources, bear in mind that they can be refuted as well.
• Try not to post speculation/ hearsay or gossip.
• Avoid judging / bashing musicians or music, and state your criticism politely.
• Let's be kind to everyone's preferences and try not to yuck anyone's yum.
• At all times, IF CoC and forum rules should be followed.

The Oldest Gharana of Hindustani Music is the Gwalior Gharana. There are many Gharanas that actually originated from Gwalior Gharana. Nathan Peer Baksh and Nathe Khan were the two people who founded Gwalior Gharana in the 16th century.

The first Music School in India is the “Gandharva Mahavidyalaya” in Lahore (which was then a part of India). It was set up by “Pandit Vishnu Digambar Paluskar” on 5th May 1901. The Music school was run by funds raised by concerts, public support and donations from the richer class of the society. Vishnu Digambar returned to Mumbai in September 1908 to start a branch of the Gandharva Mahavidyalaya. Eventually, the Lahore school was shifted to Mumbai after Independence.

The first Musician to receive Padma Bhushan Award is MS Subbulakshmi. She received Padma Bhusan Award in the year 1954, Padma Vibhushan Award in 1975, Ramon Magsaysay Award for Public service in 1974.

First Indian to compose Symphony is Illayaraja. In July 1993 Illayaraja composed a full length western classical symphony. It took one month to compose this one-hour symphony. Illayaraja is the first Asian whose symphony was performed by John Scott of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. The Orchestra is patronized by Queen Elizabeth.

First Gramophone Record in India was made in Kolkata in the year 1898. Thomas Edison invented the sound machine which was called the Phonograph in 1877. Hemendra Mohan Bose of Kolkata who was an Indian entrepreneur imported the Phonograph machine and made the cylinder gramophone record. The records were popularly known as Bose’s Records. The Gramophone & Typewriter Ltd recorded the first Indian song in their Beliaghata factory in 1898.

I knew about MS and Ilaiya Raja but the others were new to me.

Is Bose connected in any way to the Bose audio systems of these days? Would be awesome if he was!

Also wonder if Pandit Digambar Paluskar had any connection with D.V. Paluskar.

And yes, this is not just for Bollywood, but all music.
