British Folk music is a genre that includes jigs, reels, sea shanties, hornpipes and other traditional forms of songs that either tell stories or are meant as musical pieces to accompany traditional dancing.
Here's a British folk rock band that I adore! Steeleye Span (Maddy Prior's vocals! ⭐️).
My Johnny was a Shoemaker
My Johnny was a shoemaker and dearly he loved me
My Johnny was a shoemaker but now he's gone to sea
With pitch and tar to soil his hands
And to sail across the sea, stormy sea
And sail across the stormy sea
His jacket was a deep sky blue and curly was his hair
His jacket was a deep sky blue, it was, I do declare
For to reive the topsails up against the mast
And to sail across the sea, stormy sea
And sail across the stormy sea
Some day he'll be a captain bold with a brave and a gallant crew
Some day he'll be a captain bold with a sword and spyglass too
And when he has a gallant captain's sword
He'll come home and marry me, marry me
He'll come home and marry me
Blacksmith by Steeleye Span
A blacksmith courted me nine months or better
He fairly won my heart, wrote me a letter
With his hammer in his hand he looked so clever
And if I were with my love I would live forever
Oh where has my love gone with his cheeks like roses
He is gone across the sea gathering primroses
I'm afraid the shining sun might burn and scorch his beauty
And if I were with my love I would do my duty
Strange news is a-come to town, strange news is carried
Strange news flies up and down that my love is married
Oh I wish them both great joy, though they don't hear me
And if I were with my love I would do my duty
What did you promise me when you lay beside me
You said you'd marry me and not deny me
If I said I'd marry you twas only to try you
So bring your witness love and I'll not deny you
O, witness have I none save God Almighty
And may He reward you well for the slighting of me
Her lips grew pale and wan; it made her poor heart tremble
For to think she had loved one, and he proved deceitful
A blacksmith courted me, nine months and better
He fairly won my heart; he wrote me a letter
With his hammer in his hand, he looked so clever
And if I were with my love, I would live forever
Bahinabai Chaudhary (1880-1951) was famous Marathi poetess who composed her songs verbally in Ovi metre in Khandeshi (a region in North Maharashtra) dialect. Her songs were noted down and published by her son posthumously. Her poetry captures essence of life, hardships of women, and reflects the culture of village and farming life.
Are Sansar Sansar is one of her most famous poems. This version is in Suman Kalyanpur's voice.
