IPL S17 Series finale. Hello, and welcome to the final show down as Kolkata Knight Riders get ready to take on Sunrisers Hyderabad. We are still two hours away from start time, but as it was raining around this time yesterday in Chennai, we thought why not provide a quick update on match day. As things stand, it is fairly cloudy overhead in Chennai, but dry and very humid. The forecast isn't of much rain, and we hope it remains that way for the rest of the evening.

Before IPL 2024, Pat Cummins had never captained in T20 cricket. But he seems to have the Midas touch when it comes to leading a side. In the last 12 month, he won the World Test Championship and the ODI World Cup with Australia, and now have led Sunrisers Hyderabad, who had finished last in 2021 and 2023 and eighth in 2022, to the final.

Tonight, he will be up against Shreyas Iyer, who did not have the best of times after the ODI World Cup. He struggled with a back injury, lost his BCCI contract and has been dropped from India's Test and T20I sides. His own performance this IPL hasn't been noteworthy. But now he has become the first captain to lead two different IPL teams - Delhi Capitals in 2020 and Kolkata Knight Riders now - to the final.

While there has been a stark difference in the two captains' recent fortunes, the manners in which their sides have batted have a lot more in common. With Tavis Head and Abhishek Sharma at the top, SRH have rewritten the T20 batting handbook. KKR have had destructive batters throughout their line-up, starting with Sunil Narine to Ramandeep Singh. With the Impact Player offering extra batting cushion, they have shed all the shackles. The result is, these two teams have posted five of the ten highest totals in the IPL history this season.

18:00 Local Time, 12:30 GMT, 18:00 IST: After 70 league matches and 3 playoffs, we're here for the grand finale. It's the IPL final and it pits 3-time champion, Kolkata Knight Riders, up against the 2016 champions, Sunrisers Hyderabad. It's been a long wait for both teams to add to their collection, both teams did make it to the finals once, the Knight Riders in 2021 and the Sunrisers in 2018, only for both of them to be beaten by the Chennai Super Kings (CSK). It's pretty ironic then that both teams will now meet at CSK's homeground Chepauk, with destiny firmly in their hands.

Road to the final - It has been plain sailing as far as the Knight Riders are concerned in this season's tournament. They suffered only 3 losses and haven't been beaten by any team for exactly one month. On the other hand, the Sunrisers had to wait until their 13th game to confirm a playoff position and then won their last match to secure a top-2 spot. In the big scheme of things, they've never beaten the Knight Riders this season. They were beaten by a 4-run margin in a close opening encounter, but there was nothing close to their hammering in Qualifier 1.
