-----------

Australia has added Jake Fraser-McGurk and Matt Short to their T20 World Cup 2024 squad. There are no changes in the original 15-member squad, both of them will join team as traveling reserves.

I'd add just Ruturaj, given Jaiswal's poor form. The other slot could be fine, and even if Rohit bombs, KL could replace him at the top. Normally, Rohit would be out, but since he's the captain, he can then bat in the middle overs if it's determined that there are better openers than him in the side

Instead, in addition to Gaikwad, I'd add Bhuvi to the side, as well as Umran Malik. Granted, in Indian pitches, there may not be much for Umran, but since US pitches will be taking their cues from Australia, rather than India, Umran Malik could be more useful there

Glad to read that JFM is now in the WC squad, even as a travelling reserve. Can't say I know much about Matt Short. Are Nathan Ellis and Cameron Green in the side?

In a battle between the top two teams of this yearโ€™s Indian Premier League (IPL), the winner of the match between Kolkata Knight Riders and Sunrisers Hyderabad will qualify for the final. The match played at the Narendra Modi Stadium coule be decided by the might of the openers and the Powerplay. With the scoring rates surging to a record high this season, KKR and SRH have stood at the forefront of the batting revolution led by their deadly opening pairs during the league stage

While Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma bludgeoned the opposition bowlers up top for Hyderabad, Sunil Narine and Phil Salt formed a successful attacking pair for Kolkata. KKR will miss the services of Salt for the playoffs after the England star flew back to fulfill national commitments ahead of the T20 World Cup.

Head and Abhishek lead the batting charts as the most successful pair of the season with 676 runs at a staggering run rate of 13.74 across three 100-plus stands and two half-century partnerships. The duo also notched up two 100-plus partnerships within the PowerPlay โ€“ a record in the IPL. Meanwhile, Narine and Salt are third on the list with 559 runs at a 12.46 run rate.

Abhishek Sharma - record breaker

Abhishek Sharma has had a spellbinding run with the bat this season, breaking numerous records along the way. Here's a look at a few eye-popping stats:

  • Abhishek broke Sanath Jayasuriya's 16-year record (16) for most PowerPlay sixes in a season. He currently has 28 sixes in the PP.
  • Abhishek became the first batter ever to record over 400 runs in a T20 series without facing more than 30 balls in an innings.
  • Abhishek became the first Indian batter to record 40 sixes in an IPL season.
  • Abhishek struck the joint-quickest fifty for SRH in 16 balls.

On the other hand, SRH's go-for-broke opening combination of Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma is very much intact. Strange things have certainly happened in cricket, particularly in the IPL, but the success or failure of the opening combinations of the sides could determine the result of the game.

Then there is this bowling factor that gives Pat Cummins's side some advantage. The Hyderabad team has largely depended on its pacers - T Natarajan, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Cummins himself with Jaydev Unadkat and Marco Jansen to fall back on - and the Narendra Modi Stadium has mostly aided the pacers. The Knight Riders' arsenal has been their spinners, chiefly Narine and Varun Chakaravarthy.

One thing though - Rahul Tripathi has been successful only b'cos he came in at ball 2, and was a virtual opener in that game. Otherwise, while he was a great success as an opener both in RPSG and initially in KKR, when he dropped to #3, his runs dried up. He's like Prithvi Shaw, Manish Pandey and Mandeep Singh - only successful as an opener, not anywhere else

Also, if #4 comes in after over 6, that #4 should be Klassen, rather than Nitish Reddy. Let him take on Varun, Narain and even Anukul, if the latter is the one selected

Player to watch out for KKR

The washed-out contest against RR in particular robbed KKR of an opportunity to give expected replacement Rahmanullah Gurbaz a go at the top with Narine, something that would have settled a few concerns certainly.

Player to watch out for - SRH

Australian southpaw Head has in many ways redefined aggressiveness with the bat while also remaining successful (533 runs with one century and four fifties). His fearlessness has also brought the best out of the young Indian batter Abhishek (467), who has clobbered an overall 41 sixes this IPL โ€” 10 more than his overall tally of 31 in the previous six seasons.
