Punjab currently sits in eighth place in the standings with four wins and seven losses. They will hope to register a win against RCB and move up in the IPL 2024 standings. On the other hand, Royal Challengers Bengaluru with four wins and seven losses in 11 games currently sits in seventh place in the standings, and they will hope to register their fourth consecutive win of the season.
Both teams have shown their weak and strong side in the tournament. While PBKS is not getting enough help from their batting department from the likes of Rilee Rossouw, Sam Curran and Jitesh Sharma, RCB has the likes of Cameron Green and Glenn Maxwell who haven’t used the magic of their bat as of yet.
The winner of the match will secure seventh spot in the points table. But their chances of qualifying for the playoffs will stay alive. A loss in today’s would be a tough pill to swallow.
Earlier this week, Virat Kohli questioned the credentials of those calling the game and hinted that they, unlike him, didn’t have the first-hand experience of being in a tight T20 situation. This was after the commentators – an eclectic group of game’s greats and internationals of repute – had been critical about his strike rate and his skills to take on the spinners.
“It is about winning the game for the team. And there is a reason you have done this for 15 years … You have done this, day in and day out. You have won games for your team. And I am not quite sure, if you have not been in that situation yourself, to sit and speak about the game from a box,” Kohli had said. Here the ‘you’ alternately meant ‘I’ and the ‘commentators’. Kohli didn’t take names but it was easy to guess who he was targeting.
On Saturday evening, the box reacted. Indian great Sunil Gavaskar lashed out at the broadcaster Star Sports for airing clips of Kohli’s comments repeatedly. Gavaskar, in the pre-match show before RCB vs GT, said: “All these guys talk about, ‘oh we don’t care about outside noise’. Accha! Then why are you replying to any outside noise or whatever it is. We all played a bit of cricket, not a lot of cricket. We don’t have agendas. We speak about what we see. We don’t necessarily have any likes and dislikes. Even if we have likes and dislikes, we actually speak on what is happening… I hope Star Sports realises that when that clip is shown, questioning the critics, the critics are your own commentators. For you to show the person belittling your own commentators, I’m not sure that’s a great thing. You need to realise you have shown it enough times, everybody’s got the message. I would be very disappointed if you show it once more.”
Royal Challengers Bengaluru won their third successive IPL match on Saturday night to keep their slim chance of qualifying for IPL 2024 playoffs alive. They defeated Gujarat Titans at Bengaluru’s M Chinnaswamy Stadium by four wickets.
This is a remarkable turnaround for RCB, who were at the bottom of the IPL 2024 standings after eight matches, having won just a single game. But after their third win in a row in IPL 2024, they have climbed to the seventh spot. Punjab Kings and Gujarat also have eight points each, but PBKS have played one less match in IPL 2024.

No, Punjab Kings skipper Shikhar Dhawan is unlikey to play this match due to his injury as per assistant coach Brad Haddin. But he'll be back for the team's last 2 matches. That means Sam Curran will lead PBKS against RCB tonight.
Player to watch out for in Punjab Kings in IPL match today: Harshal Patel, the man who is second in the race for the Purple Cap with 17 wickets from 11 games, one wicket behind current Purple Cap holder Jasprit Bumrah, but having played one less match.
Player to watch out for in Royal Challengers Bengaluru in IPL match today: Virat Kohli, the man who is the holder of the Orange Cap at the moment having scored 542 runs from 11 innings. He’s currently ahead of CSK’s Ruturaj Gaikwad just by one solitary run.

Hello and welcome to our live coverage of Match 58. It's a must-win game for both teams to keep their slender hopes of qualification alive. The loser will become the second team to be eliminated after Mumbai Indians.
Pitch and ground dimensions: The same pitch that was used between PBKS and CSK. 64m and 62m square boundaries, 75m down the ground. There's a tinge of grass on the surface, it's dry and hard. The average first innings score for night games is 195 at this venue. There will be some lateral movement. Spin can play a part on this wicket if you bowl in the right areas. Out of the 18 wickets in the last game, 7 wickets were taken by the spinners. A surface that is decent for batting but the bowlers will also extract some help, reckons Daren Ganga.
