Maharashtra Election Results 2024: Victory margin lowest at 162 for AIMIM candidate, 208 for Patole.

In the Maharashtra Assembly polls on Saturday, constituencies with over 35 per cent Muslim voters showed varied results. The opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) secured six seats, whilst the BJP-led Mahayuti alliance won four.

Here are some of the major upsets of the Maharashtra assembly polls.

1. Prithviraj Chavan: The former Maharashtra Chief Minister and Congress leader was defeated by BJP's Atul Bhosale from Karad South constituency by nearly 40,000 votes. The Congress veteran received 1,00,150 votes while Bhosale polled 1,39,505 votes.

2. Balasaheb Thorat: Another Congress veteran Balasaheb Thorat, was handed a shocking defeat in Sangamner by debutant Amol Khatal of BJP. Khatal, who was a political unknown ran an internet cafe and beat Thorat with a margin of 10,560 votes.

3. Rajesh Tope: Shiv Sena's Hikmat Udhan breached the sitting MLA and former cabinet minister Rajesh Tope's stronghold of Ghansawangi seat. Tope had represented the seat for consecutive three terms.

4. Dhiraj Deshmukh: Incumbent Congress legislator from Latur rural and youngest son of late CM Vilasrao Deshmukh, Dhiraj Deshmukh lost to MLC Ramesh Karad of the the BJP. [Ritesh Deshmukh too went to support him and was giving gyaan about Hindutava)]

5. Kunal Patil: Another Congress bigwig who was handed over a defeat by a debutant. Patil lost to BJP's Raghavendra Bhadane-Patil with a margin of 66,000 votes.

6. Amit Thackeray: Political heir to Maharashtra Navnirman Sena chief Raj Thackeray, Amit lost his debut polls to Shiv Sena (UBT) candidate Mahesh Baliram Sawant by 17,151 votes from Mahim seat.

7. Fahad Ahmed: A political activist who made his electoral debut on an NCP(SCP) ticket, Fahad Ahmad lost to NCP candidate Sana Malik in a closely contested battle. While he maintained a lead in the beginning but ultimately lost with a margin of 3,378 votes from Anushakti Nagar. (Swara Bhasker's Husband)

BY-POLLS

Out of the 46 seats where byelections were held, the BJP and its allies won 26, a gain of nine seats, followed by Congress with seven -- a loss of six seats.

The Trinamool Congress won six, the Aam Aadmi Party three, and the Samajwadi Party two seats.

The LDF in Kerala and BAP in Rajasthan got one each.

UP bypolls

The BJP, under Yogi Adityanath's leadership, secured six of seven seats in Uttar Pradesh bypolls, including two long-held Samajwadi Party (SP) strongholds.

The NDA won 7 of 9 seats overall.

Rajasthan bypolls

BJP wins 5 of 7 Assembly bypolls in Rajasthan.

While Congress secured only one (Dausa).

The Rashtriya Loktantrik Party (RLP) lost its stronghold, Khinwsar, for the first time since 2008, and the Bharat Adivasi Party (BAP) retained Chorasi.

Congress, which previously held four of these seats, finished third in four constituencies.

Bihar bypolls

The NDA swept the Bihar bypolls, winning all four seats, including RJD strongholds Belaganj and Ramgarh. In Belaganj, JD(U)’s Manorama Devi defeated RJD’s Vishwanath Kumar Singh by 21,391 votes, ending the RJD's 34-year winning streak.

Prashant Kishor’s Jan Suraaj Party (JSP) made an impactful debut, potentially splitting votes in two RJD bastions, with candidate Mohammad Amjad securing over 17,000 votes in Belaganj.

  1. Sikkim: Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) secured two seats unopposed.

  2. Lok Sabha Bypolls:

    • Kerala: Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi won her maiden election from Wayanad, defeating CPI(M)-led LDF's Sathyan Mokeri by over 4.1 lakh votes.
    • Maharashtra: Congress narrowly won Nanded after a vote recount.
  3. Assembly Bypolls:

    • Uttar Pradesh: Elections held in nine constituencies; BJP led in five. Voter turnout was 49.3%, with Ghaziabad logging the lowest (33%).
    • Punjab: Four constituencies voted, with AAP and Congress winning one seat each.
    • Karnataka- Congress won all 3.
    • West Bengal- TMC won all 6
    • Madhya Pradesh- BJP and Congress winning one seat each
    • Assam- NDA won all 5
    • Meghalaya (1)- NDA won
    • Gujarat (1)- BJP
    • Uttarakhand (1)- BJP
    • Chhattisgarh (1)- BJP
