An act as benign as this that seeks to give home to people who have nowhere else to go, no place on Earth kind to them, should have ideally been welcomed by parties across ideological spectrum.. But well the politics.. πŸ˜’ Nevertheless what needs to be done should be done.

Anti-blasphemy and anti-conversion laws make a country unsafe for everyone. Freedom of expression and association are universal human rights that India should represent as an inspiration to neighbouring countries.

Not only Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, Buddhists, Parsis, and Christians from Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan are desperate for refugee status in India, followed by a path to citizenship.

Those who are atheist or agnostic, or designated Muslim by birth, also yearn for a country where they can choose not to believe ... discard customs and labels that encumber them ... find a compatible partner, raise a family, and pass on heritage that inspires them ... and not have to worry about being reported. Lesbian, gay, transgender, queer, and other non-conforming people are born into all kinds of religious environments, and equally deserve the safety offered by an enlightened, modern country.

In Canada, where I live, no political party controls the granting of refugee status, and there are no laws prioritizing any religious or ethnic label. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canadadetermines the eligibility of refugee claims, and refers them for adjudication to an independent tribunal, the Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada. Every application is evaluated based on evidence that the individual was targeted in the country of origin.

In 2014, Canada accepted fewer than 20 refugees from India (rejecting over 80% of claims); in 2022, the Immigration and Refugee Board judged valid the claims of 3,469 refugees from India (rejecting over 50% of claims). These are not people who wanted to come to Canada; they were forced to leave India or die.

Thankful to Indian govt for implementing it.

Good decision by the govt. it’s the last push before elections to get important things beyond the line and glad this time they did not balk to pressure or propoganda. πŸ‘πŸΌ πŸ‘πŸΌ

I didn't expect the dispensation to do it after they bogged down due to pressure from fanatics and propagandists.

It's a welcome move and I hope it improves the wretched living conditions of the actual victims of religious persecution.
