It was fine. His character was based from south.
Precisely . The trouble glaring enough to confine him to character as pointed out^ thereby severely limiting his BW prospects .
In his own words - "I am not fluent in Hindi. I used to learn Hindi but no one over there speaks Hindi so it is not that fluent.
Mohanlal feels that although the reach of Hindi cinema is wider, he has nothing much to prove here as an actor.
I am content and happy with my own language. "
Why Mohanlal is not interested in Bollywood
Same issue with Vijay in Farzi as I noticed . Or some Northie actors also .
Mind you that's not to mean to be the case with all non-ethnic actors for eg KK Menon who comes across very much a regular Hindi joe than a Malayali . Just depends on what language they have been regular enough / proficient I guess .
Mohanlal never set out for a career in Hindi cinema. He had already reached heights with Malayalam cinema. It's not as if they don't know what they are speaking, they get the words translated to understand the dialogues. He didn't have any heavy dialogues in Company and they were minimal for basic understanding. I feel you are mixing accent, tonality to it. There are south Indians with heavy accent or tonality for those who know hindi but there are south Indians who are largely based on metros whose hindi is like a regular joe.Originally posted by: Mr.Abrol

KK Menon's formative years were in Pune. He has hindi theatre background. There is another Tamilian R Madhavan whose formative years I guess were in Jharkhand.
Gujratis hindi has a different tone to Bengalis to Punjabi's. I don't think that could be a problem unless they are playing a character from different base than what they are.
