Yes. Hema Malini has total control of her popularity with the older population. It's not even close. If she was a good politician you could have seen her as a Jayalalithaa-esque figure but she's doing it for the cash so she's just moderately successful.

People forget that there are three major female superstars with the video camera industry being created, Hema, Sridevi and Madhuri. Obviously, Hema was quick to realize she did not have the acting chops of her compatriots, but focused very much on branding herself as a businesswomen + dancer.

The marriage with Dharam did not impact her image because it was only a few years after double marriage was abolished, and both Hema/Dharam had a lot of rural fans that did not see the issue considering they were also living in similar situations. So this "jodi" was very popular onscreen + offscreen - Hema spent 3 decades releasing all sorts of cookbooks, TV shows that introduced superstars like SRK, all avenues of media production, all of those ventures that directly targeted the older audience. Her fans are not online but they are supportive, and the general view is positive.

This obviously did not extend to her children because Hema really represented the 70s. You never hear Hema/any PR saying the truth, that Hema did better at the BO than the likes of Sri/Madz who are properly recognized and championed, because Hema is reaping the reward through politics.

On the other hand, Sridevi and Madhuri focused on modernizing for the modern audience. Sri's acting chops were up to the mark and she adapted to the new style, so she did survive, but her marriage did come with criticism, so her hold over her "age group" wasn't absolute. Madhuri on the other hand, worked on her marketing skills, but din't make as many connections as she thought in her time so her relevancy kept dropping, although she's still popular.

This is a major factor too. I don't think she could have lost even with a ton of negative press this time, although the margin for victory is very high.

How about we not land inexperienced, incompetent actors in Parliament? Forgot when NSD or FTII taught undergraduate courses in PubEd or basic civics? And all the people you suggested didn't go there anyhow
