NY Times: ‘Believe All Women’ Is a Right-Wing Trap

How feminists got stuck answering for a canard.

In fact, “Believe All Women” does have an asterisk: *It’s never been feminist “boilerplate.” What we are witnessing is another instance of the right decrying what it imagines the American women’s movement to be.

Spend some mind-numbing hours tracking the origins of “Believe All Women” on social media sites and news databases — as I did — and you’ll discover how language, like a virus, can mutate overnight. All of a sudden, yesterday’s quotes suffer the insertion of some foreign DNA that makes them easy to weaponize. In this case, that foreign intrusion is a word: “all.”

In my online searches, I encountered some feminists who seemed genuinely to subscribe to the phrase. But overwhelmingly, the Twitterati deploying the phrase were conservatives, wielding it as a whip. Why?

Because the right knows what #MeToo activists do well to keep in mind: Peril lies in purity. If the pluralism of the women’s movement can be reduced to rigid boilerplate in the public mind, then the future of #MeToo will have more to lose from a single untruthful woman whom it’s sworn to defend than from boatloads of predatory men.

If this trauma really happened to someone...they would remember the year, month, date and time...molestation and rape is the worst thing that could happen to any woman...and this woman doesn't even remember the year????

That’s what is really suspicious. In this day and age, u can easily track your movements by a smart phone , back to several years. Recently, when I couldn’t remember the particular year of an event, I went through my photos and maps app of the iPhone and voila...... I could pin it to a particular date. Took me two minutes. This not remembering dates is not cutting it.

This reminds me of the Brett Kavanah hearings. I was living in the US at that time, and boy..... it was such a circus. The accuser had similar allegations with no date or year. She doesn’t remember where it happened or how she got there, No witnesses, no friends to corroborate, but all she could remember was that it was Brett. It clearly looked like a political hit job.

May be they evolved on the subject when they Saw how the false Me too allegations destroyed SSR and drove him to depression. By the time the girl cleared the matters, damage was already done . Sushanth’s image and reputation was already destroyed. That’s why it’s a lesson not to jump to conclusions but wait for the proper investigation and evidance .

Why does it always has to be reduced to RW vs. LW on such neutral matters??? “Believe all women” was such a ridiculous and illogical position in the first place. Both Men and women lie . Period.

Agreed. I think Atwood nailed it.

But this Op-Ed is right that In the U.S. the current RW has no shame and this stance of "believe all women" has backfired on the LW while the right wallow in it to take pot shots at the left who sometimes bend over backward to support the "All" (see Al Franklin resigning over comedic pics) while not caring one bit if their candidate is a multi accused pedophile (see recent Georgia Senate election) or multi accused sexual abuser caught on tape bragging about it (see current President).

She did have a date and a year- just not an address. She was 15 and it was 35 years ago. Well before the time of smart phones. But she had concurrently spoken to others at the time and later to her psychiatrist well before Kavenaugh was ever considered for the Supreme Court. The other women that later came out during his time at Yale where he's exposed himself etc that were then later ignored after a handcuffed (by McConnell and co) truncated FBI investigation backed up a pattern of a drunk (beer beer beer) sexually assaulting Brett. His friend, the other then teenager in the attack wrote an autobiographical book about his life as a teenage alcoholic and referred to Brett as a black out drunk. He too was never called to the hearing.

It’s the Left wing in the US who were the real hypocrites. They used the “believe all women” scam as a political tool against their RW enemies , esp, during the Brett Kavannah hearings..... they went full throttle. It backfired on them when the Joe Biden’s allegations came out. All the leftie feminists who shouted the slogan before took a 180 turn, and started speaking abt “due process”, “innocent until proven guilty” 😆.

Whereas , the RW always maintained that this “believe all women” is bullshit as women also can lie. They have been consistent on this issue.

Nah, the RW pulls out the slogan as an attack when they want to. The difference is some of the LW fall for it and some actually believe it so they'll shoot themselves in the foot adhering to it. See the ones talking about how they'll have to vote 3rd Party now - fools. Most of the RW just doesn't care if allegations are true or not, they just pretend that they sometimes care which makes them even bigger hypocrites.

Kavanaugh was so dirty, just like Clarence Thomas decades before - when most of the Senate including Biden was raking Anita Hill over the coals - during a time when the slogan might well have been believe no women. The issue is for some it's never changed. Extremism is rarely the way to get to the truth.

She first said mid 1980’s in her therapist’s notes but then changed it to 1982 when it came to light that Brett was already attending Yale during the said period.

@bold..... the Deborah Ramirez story also had no corroborating witnesses to it.

https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/opinion/the-deborah-ramirez-corroboration-that-wasnt

Anyways, this is neither the right place or right topic to discuss this in detail, but, Anurag’s allegations remained me of this case with respect to the bot remembering part .

Ofcourse, the RW attacked the left when the left’s hypocrisy is exposed. That’s what the political opponents do. RW never said “believe all women” or “questioning is victim blaming”. Infact, it always maintained the opposite saying, “we cannot believe every allegation just bcoz it’s made by a woman”. Ofcourse, every side becomes hypocritical when it comes to their own , both left and right. Sure, There are issues where the RW has been hypocritical about, like, gun laws, Merrill garland ...... but in this particular issue of “me too” it’s the left that’s wrong and the right is right.

@bold.... neither of us know whether Kav, Clarence Thomas , or even joe Biden are dirty or not bcoz all of this is he-said , she-said stuff. Each side chooses to believe their own when there is no concrete proof. But, the lefty women like Kamala, Klobochar , Milano who cried during the Brett’s hearings about “victim shaming” and “justice” completely changed the tune when Joe Biden was accused by Tara reid. Suddenly, it’s about “due process” and “I believe Joe”!!!!!! That’s what is hypocritical and exposes them as political tools.
