Mani Ratnam has been in the process of adapting Tamil iconic writer Kalki's Ponniyin Selvan for a very long time. Years ago, it was said that Mani tried roping in Vijay and Mahesh Babu for the lead role, but the attempt went nowhere.
Now, there are strong speculations that Mani Ratnam is in talks with Jayam Ravi, Vikram, Amitabh Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai and Mohan Babu for the film.
While Jayam Ravi has been approached for the role of Arul Mozhi Varman, Vikram has been asked to play the role of Aditya Karikalan. Now, the interesting aspect of the film's cast is that Bollywood star and former Miss World (1994) is approached for the character Nandhini, who is considered to be deadliest character in the novel.
Nandhini is a venomous character, who is married forcefully to Periya Pazhuvetarayar. Mani Ratnam is planning to rope in Telugu actor Mohan Babu for the Pazhuvetarayar's role.
However, no official confirmation has been made about the project. Budget is going to be the biggest constraint for the director since it is going to cost a lot to capture the magnificent world of Ponniyin Selvan through a camera.
Mani Ratnam made an impressive comeback with the film Chekka Chivantha Vaanam, which was also a multi-starrer film.
In the past, stalwarts like MGR and Kamal Haasan tried to make Ponniyin Selvan into a movie. But, they faced a lot of difficulties and moved on to their next projects.
Ponniyin Selvan, written by Kalki, is the story of Arulmozhivarman, who went on to become the Great King Raja Raja Chozhan. It is said that Kalki took nearly 3 years to complete the novel.
