Guide is about human fallacies and the end hints at spiritual awakening.

Dev Anand being forced to be a godman is symbolic. That's the first unselfish thing he's done in his life. First time he did something which others made him do.

Waheeda Rehman taking off and dropping each ornament as she goes to meet him in the end, signifies letting go of worldly attachments.

Everyone has their own interests and passions in that film. Towards the end, the guide becomes a spiritual guide as well.

I don't judge the characters in it because in the end they come to believe in something higher than their own worldly passions.

What character you portray on film is part of the job.

I think Sharmila, coming from Bengal, grand niece of Rabindra Nath Tagore was the first woman with spirit.Zeenath, parveen had western upbringing and Bollywood exploited that.

Sharmila's bikini cover in the nineteen sixtees cannot be matched today in pushing the boundaries.

"Director Shakti Samanta told me I couldn't be seen in a bikini because it would make me seem 'frivolous'. Another time, at a success party that Dev saab threw for Guide, I danced with the choreographer and once again Samanta told me, 'A heroine is not supposed to talk in public, smile in public, or dance in public. She is supposed to sit quietly in a corner," Sharmila recalled.

She was equally eloquent talking about issues close to her heart: From her CBFC chairmanship days - "I viewed the department as a bridge between civil society, the industry and the government," Sharmila said - to her role as a Unicef goodwill ambassador. "A lot needs to be done at the grassroots level for women's empowerment, but the fact that we are talking about it suggests things are changing for the Indian woman. I think 'equal opportunity' is what true woman's empowerment stands for," Sharmila said.

I am glad everybody is talking about equal opportunity..It is a good start

My all time favourite song. Actually whenever I upset or demoralised, I listen this song. Truly booster dose 😊

Kaanto se khinch ke ye aanchal tod ke bandhan baandhee paayal
Koee naa roko dil kee udaan ko, dil wo chalaa
Aaj fir jeene kee tamannaa hain
Aaj fir marane kaa iraadaa hain

Apane hee bas mein naheen mai, dil hain kahee to hoo kahee main
Jaane kyaa paa ke meree jindagee ne, has kar kahaa
Aaj fir ...

Mai hoo gubaar yaa toofaan hoo, koee bataaye main kahaa hoo
Dar hain safar mein kahee kho naa jaaoo mai, rastaa nayaa
Aaj fir ...

Kal ke andheron se nikal ke, dekhaa hain aankhe malate malate
Fool hee fool jindagee bahaar hain, tay kar liyaa
Aaj fir ...

👏 ⭐️

If we have to speak of pioneering women we should give due credit to Shobhna Samarth and Durga Khote. Back in the day cinema was considered the realm of the lower caste and foreign religions. Respectable Hindu women didn't enter the cine world. These Maharashtrian women broke the taboo and still commanded respect in society, albeit with challenges. Shobhna Samarth back in the day was the first woman to dare pose in a swimsuit. Despite that we still have a big ado about swimsuits even today.
When you think of it Guide embodies a lot of what the My Choice video states. The woman does not want to be seen as merely a dancer or prostitute. She does not want her past to define who she is. She desires society to see her as a whole human with her own dreams and aspirations. She desires a right to leave her philandering, controlling husband so that she can find love, happiness and fulfillment on her terms. "Aaj Phir Jeene Ki Tammanna Hain" is a song that declares her spirit free.

This goes to show why presentation and context totally matter. Even members of an older more conservative generation revere Guide as a story about complex human emotions highlighting why society needs to change their perception towards women. It did play its part in making separation and seeking love more acceptable for women.

Perhaps DP and Homi should focus on making good feminist movies that tell stories which make the audience think. Indian society is one where presentation and context matter a lot. An artsy video my not make impact, but a good story that tugs their heartstrings and asks uncomfortable questions will.

Wow. It's a funny thing how times have changed so much and in a way not much at all. Women at that time were so restricted in specific roles and yet the A-listers took tremendous risks and tried to re-define stereotypes.
And the biggest actresses of today are so content playing flowerpot roles. It's such a regression especially when there's more liberation today and females can actually command more power.

Either way, I love her. She's so beautiful and so simple and so graceful. Her and Nutan will always be my favorites. Nutan another actress who did such an amazing job in Sujata. I love the concept of the movie.

Devika Rani as well.

Some people, still dragging My Choice video everywhere. Though their right to drag it everywhere but linking to every article, old film is taking it bit too far. No people didn't start talking of equal opportunities "only atleast now".

Rosie is accepted because her husband is impotent and a philanderer himself and Dev Anand's character is seen as someone who rescued her. She's branded bewafa after she refuses to be with him. She is bashed by Raju's mother till the end. She's not made #MyChoice herself to break free.
One choice she made of her own accord, she was criticised for it by even the one who rescued her. Only her final choice redeems her as she realises her mistakes and herself gives up materialism.
Even Raju gets redeemed only after turning into a renunciate godman, selflessly fasting for villagers.

There are reasons why Guide did not meet rejection.

Nutan has done most progressive films as well. Seema, Sujata, Bandini. In fact even her less successful films had bold themes. Such as Saajan ki saheli in which Rekha is her illegitimate child who she had abandoned and it is her husband played by Rajendra Kumar, who makes a plan to make her acknowledge the daughter she deserted and pardons her for her affair and lies. Can't think of any other film in which a man supported his wife's illegitimate child.

You're so right that today's actresses, even if they are starkids, agree to do flowerpot roles wkth exception of one or two strong roles.

And these days, one does 1 good role and gets hailed as some trailblazer who redefined cinema. 😆
