Varun Dhawan recently reflected on his approach to big-budget projects, particularly action films. He shared that he’s "realistic" about his position in the industry, acknowledging that his box-office returns aren’t yet at the level required to support the high budgets of major action films, like those produced by Aditya Chopra.
In a conversation with Instant Bollywood, Varun Dhawan was asked if Aditya Chopra’s remark about the hefty budget required for an action film with him sparked any self-doubt. Varun responded assuredly, saying he’s well aware of his standing in the industry and approaches it with realism.
I'm very realistic about the position that I am in. And yeah I could have done. I can do a certain type of an action film but that won't be enough to justify the position that I am in. It won't be enough

The actor noted that, for him, only a mid-to-large-scale action film can truly represent his current standing, as even mid-budget projects have the potential to make a strong impact.
He shared an insightful conversation with Aditya Chopra, who explained what goes into making successful large-scale films. Varun recognized that action films, particularly those with substantial production quality, require a major investment and expert craftsmanship.
Varun acknowledged that while talent can occasionally make a smaller budget go further, there’s only so much it can accomplish. He admitted that his films haven’t yet achieved the box-office success needed to warrant such large-scale budgets, especially for the industry's most ambitious projects.
I don't think I was being able to hit that figure with my kind of recovery in films as yet. And I'm talking about the biggest ones being made

Varun Dhawan’s upcoming lineup features the Indian adaptation of the American series Citadel: Honey Bunny, in which he stars with Samantha Ruth Prabhu. Directed by Raj & DK, and produced by D2R Films and Amazon MGM Studios, the show also has executive production by The Russo Brothers' AGBO and Raj & DK. Citadel: Honey Bunny is set to premiere on Amazon Prime Video on November 7.
