The recent rape and murder of a junior doctor at RG Kar Hospital in Kolkata have sparked a wave of outrage across India, with many prominent Bollywood actors expressing their deep distress and anger over the horrific crime. The incident, which occurred on August 9, has led to widespread protests and a public outcry demanding swift justice for the victim.

Veteran actor Shabana Azmi, known for her strong stance on social issues, recently spoke out against the alarming rise in such crimes, expressing her profound disappointment that despite the formation of the Justice Verma Committee in 2012, following the Nirbhaya case, rape cases have not decreased. Speaking at an event in Pune, Shabana, 73, voiced her concern: “It’s embarrassing to see that these kinds of heinous acts have not reduced despite the formation of the Justice Verma Committee back in 2012 during the Nirbhaya case.” She further emphasized the need to dismantle deeply rooted patriarchy in society, stressing that women should not be treated as commodities.

President Droupadi Murmu also expressed her horror over the increasing incidents of rape, stating that the rise in such crimes is both shocking and unacceptable. She condemned the mindset that views women as inferior, urging society to remove the obstacles that prevent women from living without fear. Murmu's comments reflect the broader outrage felt across the nation, as people demand stronger measures to protect women.

Other Bollywood figures have also voiced their anger and concern. Preity Zinta described the Kolkata incident as “heartbreaking” and “disgusting,” calling for urgent attention to women’s safety and hoping for strict punishments for the culprits. Meanwhile, Samantha Ruth Prabhu echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing the urgent need for change and prioritizing women’s safety.

The heinous crime in Kolkata has not only ignited protests but also brought the issue of women’s safety back into the spotlight. As the investigation continues, the public and celebrities alike are united in their demand for justice and a safer environment for women across the country. The call for change is louder than ever, and the hope is that these voices will lead to meaningful action and reform.
