Samantha Ruth Prabhu urges Telangana Government to follow steps of Kerala lawmakers to safeguard women in TFI

The Hema Committee report has stirred up a hornet’s nest. A number of personalities from the Malayalam film industry have found themselves under the scanner after it. Filmmaker Ranjith, Mukesh, Jayasurya, Idavela Babu and Maniyanpilla Raju have found themselves in trouble after this. Sexual exploitation of women is quite common in all kinds of work places besides showbiz. The Hema Committee has been an eye-opener for everyone. 

Actress Samantha Ruth Prabhu has shared a post by the Voice of Women urging Telangana Government to publish a similar report on extent of sexual harassment in the Telugu film industry. She has lauded the efforts of WCC that led to the formation of Hema Committee and this much needed report. This initiative happened after the #MeToo movement that exposed many from the film industry. Samantha Ruth Prabhu’s Instagram story read: We, the women of the Telugu film industry, welcome the Hema Committee report and applaud the persistent efforts of the WCC [Women in Cinema Collective] in Kerala, which has laid the path to this moment (sic). 

She said inspired by the WCC, The Voice of Women, a similar support group was formed for females working in the Telugu film industry in 2019. Samantha Ruth Prabhu requested the Government to take a step like what the Kerala administration has done. 

The post concluded, “We hereby urge the Telangana government, to publish the submitted sub-committee report on sexual harassment, which can help frame government and industry policies, to establish a safe working environment for women in the TFI (sic).”  Some of the findings of the Hema Committee have made it to national news. Celebs have spoken up about the kind of sexual harassment they have faced in different times. Mohanlal who was the chairman of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists has resigned from his post, and the executive committee is also dissolved.
